Greenpeace’s earlier slogan in German “Taten statt Warten” (action instead of waiting) seems in the case of these subjects to have mutated into “waiting instead of action”. Greenpeace has withdrawn to passive positions, trusting blindly in state and private institutions and doing no related research itself. The “air measurement bus” has been sold, for example. Why? Is air pollution a thing of the past? Or is the problem that one might be embarrassed to find something in the air other than, say, diesel exhaust?
Werner Altnickel also argues that the “Peace” in Greenpeace’s title years ago lost its justification and should be removed from the name, as Greenpeace for a long time has taken no action against the wars started by NATO, e.g. in Afghanistan, Iraq and now Libya. Hundreds of thousands of civilian victims and huge areas of ruined land seem to play no role any more for Greenpeace. – SWAT team fires semi-automatic weapons at unarmed teenage girl (RT, Nov 17, 2012):
Members of a SWAT team opened fire on an unarmed teenage girl this week when police officers outside of Washington, DC attempted to serve an early morning search warrant.
Myasia Hughley, 18, is recovering from flesh wounds following Thursday morning’s events in District Heights, Maryland. She was asleep in her bedroom at her family house when 15 FBI SWAT agents stormed the house with guns drawn.
“I’m shouting ‘Nobody is armed, nobody has a gun!’ and then all of a sudden I heard ‘She’s got a gun!’ and they just opened fire,” Emory Hughley, Myasia’s father, tells local station WJLA News.
Myasia didn’t have a gun, though, nor did any other member of the Hughley household. The authorities allegedly saw something, and in their minds had enough reason to unleash a barrage of bullets at the girl. Mr. Hughley tells Washington’s NBC News4 that he saw one agent even fire off around seven shots himself using a semi-automatic weapon.
“They almost hit my daughter, man,” he adds to WJLA. “If I hadn’t told her to go back in her room they probably would have shot her.”
“I’ve got eight holes in my wall. One bullet went past my head, almost hit me, ricocheted off my brick wall and some of the shrap metal hit my little daughter in the back of her neck, all for nothing.”

David Cameron faces a looming political battle to defend Britain’s veto over defence policy after France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Poland urged the creation of a new European Union military command “structure”.
The powerful group of countries, Europe’s largest, also welcomed plans to hold a special Brussels summit next year to “confirm our ambitions for security and defence policy” in a move that poses a major headache for the Prime Minister as the EU climbs the domestic political agenda.
Known as the “Weimar group”, the five countries met in Paris on Thursday evening to launch a new offensive to create an EU military operations headquarters, after Britain used its veto last year to block similar proposals.
“We are convinced that the EU must set up, within a framework yet to-be-defined, true civilian-military structures to plan and conduct missions and operations,” the group of countries said in a communique. “We should show preparedness to hold available, train, deploy and sustain in theatre the necessary civilian and military means.”

In the midst of this confusing crisis, which has already lasted more than five years, former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt addressed the question of who had “gotten almost the entire world into so much trouble.” The longer the search for answers lasted, the more disconcerting the questions arising from the answers became. Is it possible that we are not experiencing a crisis, but rather a transformation of our economic system that feels like an unending crisis, and that waiting for it to end is hopeless? Is it possible that we are waiting for the world to conform to our worldview once again, but that it would be smarter to adjust our worldview to conform to the world? Is it possible that financial markets will never become servants of the markets for goods again? Is it possible that Western countries can no longer get rid of their debt, because democracies can’t manage money? And is it possible that even Helmut Schmidt ought to be saying to himself: I too am responsible for getting the world into a fix?
