CNET learns the FBI is quietly pushing its plan to force surveillance backdoors on social networks, VoIP, and Web e-mail providers, and that the bureau is asking Internet companies not to oppose a law making those backdoors mandatory.
The FBI is asking Internet companies not to oppose a controversial proposal that would require firms, including Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo, and Google, to build in backdoors for government surveillance.
In meetings with industry representatives, the White House, and U.S. senators, senior FBI officials argue the dramatic shift in communication from the telephone system to the Internet has made it far more difficult for agents to wiretap Americans suspected of illegal activities, CNET has learned.
As many as 21 women were brought back to a hotel in Colombia by U.S. Secret Service and military personnel in an incident last week involving alleged misconduct with prostitutes, U.S. Senator Susan Collins said on Tuesday.
Collins was briefed by the director of the Secret Service, Mark Sullivan, on Monday evening. “There are 11 agents involved. Twenty or 21 women foreign nationals were brought to the hotel, but allegedly Marines were involved with the rest,” the Republican senator said in comments emailed to Reuters.

Today, our favorite IMF economist, and arguably one of the few people who sees the big picture, Manmohan Singh issued a paper titled “Money and Collateral“, which, not surprisingly, deals with the issues of money and collateral. And while it provides an interesting read, we can jump to the conclusion which is, not surprisingly, that there is simply not enough collateral within the global financial system, which in turn inhibits the proper intermediation of banks in traditional monetary conduits (due to the need for central banks to intervene in the place of traditional banks and shadow banking entities), which keeps the money multiplier low. Unfortunately, in the ultimate Catch 22, under central planning companies are disincentivized from investing cash into CapEx and organic growth, and instead are spending it on M&A and dividends, the two worst decisions management can take over the long run. It was one of the tangential “boxes” in the Singh paper titled “Floating Rate Note “puts”—are they forthcoming?” that caught our attention because it reminded us that in all the distraction over the past 3 months, we had forgotten that probably the most important event of 2012 is about to take place, and it has nothing to do with Europe, or with a central bank’s balance sheet. Namely: the imminent arrival of Floating Rate Note Treasurys, or Floaters. Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart claims to have film of US President Barack Obama during his young, radical college years. He tells the CPAC audience that he will release them during the upcoming presidential campaign to expose the president’s radial roots.
In light of the comments which have been posted on this article we want to make something perfectly clear. We are not and have not said nor do we believe the death of Andrew Breitbart is the result of anything other than a believed heart attack. We simply reported that different media outlets reporting the cause of death as being of “natural causes” before a cause of death has been determined is wrong and has created this sense of something more sinister. While we are certain Joel Pollak meant well with stating his opinion as to the cause of death (as did Andrews father-in-law) reporting “natural causes” as being “fact” before a cause had been official determined and entered on a death certificate is wrong for so many obvious reasons.
In attempting to gather as much information as possible for this story we ran into some very confusing statements along the way to confirming Andrew Breitbart’s death. Calls to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center have discovered some confusing information. According to the Hospital Andrew Breitbart was not admitted to the Hospital, the Hospital then transferred us to the Emergency Department saying they did not have access to the ER Dept’s information. Speaking with the Emergency Room they state:
“B as in boy R… I do not have anyone by that name having been here.” We then began spelling “Breitbart,” when she stopped us and said, “like I said B as in boy R, I am looking at our records which are in alphabetical order and we have had no one by that name in the last 72 hours brought into our ER.”
We have emailed Breitbart’s attorney seeking clarification and we decided to call Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center ER again just to see if they give the same response given earlier. We were not surprised to find the ER gave completely different info after the call the second time went directly to the nurses station. We were eventually transferred to the Hospitals Media affairs office where we were asked for our name and number and were told someone would call us. Within seconds we received a call from Roxanne Moster of UCLA media affairs office where we were told “Because of Patient privacy laws we can not confirm nor deny reports that Mr. Breitbart was ever brought into UCLA or reports that he died here.” At that we asked Ms. Moster why the previous call to UCLA ER had UCLA medical Center staff saying NO one by the name of Breitbart has been taken to the ER in the past 72 hours, and Ms. Moster said she could not answer that. Moster suggested we contact the LA County Coroners office which we did.
We have spoken with Assistant Chief Medical Examiner Ed Winter with the Los Angeles Coroners office who confirms Andrew Breitbart was pronounced dead at 00:19 AM March 1, 2012. Winter says the body has been picked up by the Coroners office and an autopsy will be performed tomorrow. (Note: We have no idea why the audio in the below video suddenly stopped and became distorted and are trying to fix it now) Claims that Andrew died of “natural causes” are the opinions of his Attorney Joel Pollak and not the statements of any medical personnel from UCLA or the LA County Coroners office. LA Assistant Chief Medical Examiner Ed Winter says autopsy to be done tomorrow (Friday March 2, 2012) and no offical cause of death has been determined.

Bush, Fed, Europe Banks in $15 Trillion Fraud, All Documented
Below is one of the strangest stories in financial history, one involving the US government lying about hundreds of thousands of tons of imaginary gold, illegal wire transfers and loans totalling $15 trillion. The video, from the House of Lords, is amazing in itself.
What it doesn’t express is where the money came from though Lord James of Blackheath proves conclusively that an effort was made to say it came from a gold reserve in Brunei that, in fact, never existed.
At surface, it appears we have stumbled upon the largest terrorist organization in the world and have found original documents tracing its funding to the Secretary of the Treasury and the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, two of the top financial officers in the US. A cursory review of terrorism statues in the US indicate that all transactions we will learn about are, in fact, to be assumed “terrorist money laundering” and that the only thing preventing the immediate arrest of hundreds of top financial officials is their political connections alone.

In continuing efforts to save governmental money (and waste) the Washington Post is reporting that the United States Mint will cease production of Dollar coins (with each carrying a deceased President’s likenesses). More than 40% of the coins have been returned to the Fed because no one wants them. Who needs real money when 1s and 0s are all that counts nowadays?
The presidential dollar coin is falling victim to Washington’s cost cutting efforts.
The Obama administration is stopping nearly all production of the coins, which carry the likeness of every deceased President. The effort will save taxpayers $50 million a year in production and storage costs.
In 2005, Congress mandated that the United States Mint issue the coins. But the White House says more than 40 percent of the coins are returned to the Federal Reserve because nobody wants to use them.
Instead of producing 70-80 million coins per deceased president, the Mint will now only produce as many as collectors want.
The announcement is part of the White House campaign to cut back on government waste.
A bipartisan group of senators is poised to force through dramatic changes to how the US government handles suspected terrorists—over the objections of the White House and Senate Democratic leadership.
Legislative language that emerged from the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday afternoon would mandate the automatic, indefinite military detention of noncitizens apprehended in the United States who are suspected members of Al Qaeda or associated groups. The wording, which is part of a must-pass bill to fund the military, also appears to allow the indefinite military detention of citizens and legal permanent residents. The bill would also extend restrictions on transfers of detainees from Guantánamo Bay, though only for one year.
Obama administration officials fear that the mandatory detention provisions could force the FBI to interrupt ongoing investigations in order to hand suspected terrorists over to the military. They also worry that the new rules could interfere with the prosecution of suspected terrorists in federal courts. At a homeland security and counterterrorism conference in September, White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan warned that “this approach would impose unprecedented restrictions on the ability of experienced professionals to combat terrorism.” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) held up the defense funding bill in mid-October on the basis of the those objections. The latest changes to the bill appear to address some of the administration’s concerns by claiming that designating an individual a terrorist “does not require the interruption of ongoing surveillance or intelligence gathering activities.” But civil liberties advocates are disappointed.
“The problems with these provisions have not been fixed—they’ve been made worse,” says Chris Anders, legislative counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union. “There is absolutely no reason for Congress to now pass legislation that would put in indefinite military detention American citizens and other suspects apprehended far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself. ” (Sure? How many reasons do you want to hear?)
The U.S. government’s top nuclear regulator said Monday that no one has died as a result of exposure to radiation from Japan’s Fukushima Daiiche nuclear power plant, which was hit by a tsunami in March.
He did say that some people died at the plant as a result of the tsunami itself.
“What we know right now, there have been no fatalities we are aware of that are directly related to radiation exposure,” said Gregory B. Jaczko, the chairman of the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission. “I believe there were a few workers who were killed at the plant because they were performing work and when the Tsunami hit, they lost their life.”
WASHINGTON – Late Friday, the White House turned over new documents in the Congressional investigation into the ATF “Fast and Furious” gunwalking scandal.
The documents show extensive communications between then-ATF Special Agent in Charge of the Phoenix office Bill Newell – who led Fast and Furious – and then-White House National Security Staffer Kevin O’Reilly. Emails indicate the two also spoke on the phone. Such detailed, direct communications between a local ATF manager in Phoenix and a White House national security staffer has raised interest among Congressional investigators looking into Fast and Furious. Newell has said he and O’Reilly are long time friends.
ATF agents say that in Fast and Furious, their agency allowed thousands of assault rifles and other weapons to be sold to suspected traffickers for Mexican drug cartels. At least two of the guns turned up at the murder scene of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry last December.
CBS News has obtained a series of emails that show the White House had more information on ATF’s controversial Fast and Furious operation than previously disclosed. But administration officials insists nobody at the White House knew specifically that ATF was allowing guns to “walk” into the hands of suspected gun traffickers for Mexican drug cartels.
ATF ‘allegedly’ allowed more than two thousand assault rifles and other weapons to fall into the hands of suspects from late fall of 2009 through 2010.
The emails indicate three White House officials were briefed on gun trafficking efforts that included Fast and Furious. The officials are Kevin O’Reilly, then-director of North American Affairs, now assigned to the State Department; Dan Restrepo, senior Latin American advisory; and Greg Gatjanis, a national security official.
The White House officials were provided information on Fast and Furious and other border gun trafficking efforts through what an administration source calls “back channels” by ATF’s then-Special Agent in Charge of Phoenix Bill Newell. “…don’t want ATF HQ to find out, especially since this is what they should be doing (briefing you),” Newell wrote in an email to the White House’s O’Reilly on July 28, 2010. Newell has since been transferred out of that post.

The White House could resort to an little-known line in the US constitution to prevent a ruinous default if Democrats and Republicans do not agree to raise the debt ceiling by August 2, experts say.
The 143-year-old clause, written to address still-potent divisions after the bloody Civil War, has been dredged up by legal scholars as well as the US Treasury secretary to suggest how a debt debacle might be avoided.
But resorting to it could spark a constitutional crisis over just who — the Congress or the White House — controls the power of the federal purse, analysts say.
The US government reached its debt limit of $14.29 trillion in May and since then the Treasury has used special measures to allow the government to keep paying its bills.
But unless the limit is raised by August 2, the Treasury says, growing spending and debt service commitments will force a default, which would have disastrous ripple effects throughout the global financial system.
Republicans in Congress — which sets the debt cap into law — have refused to raise it unless the move is accompanied by deep spending cuts, and their talks with Democrats have made little visible progress.
If the impasse is not broken, could President Barack Obama simply ignore the ceiling and borrow more money?
Some legal experts believe he could, citing the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, adopted in 1868.

From Bush to Obama, we have seen not a change in policies, not a reversal, not even a ‘failing’ to change course, but the exact opposite: a determined continuation, extension and increase of the very same policies.
Rather than an end to imperialist wars, we have witnessed the increase in scope and the extension of war into other countries. Rather than two wars, we now have four.
Rather than policies favouring ‘Main Street’ as promised, we have witnessed the unprecedented transfer of wealth into the coffers of the banks, corporations and military contractors. We have seen record corporate profits while social misery for the working classes continues to rise, with unemployment not seen since the Great Depression and record home foreclosures. We now have austerity imposed on the vast majority while those who caused the financial crisis with wars, bailouts and corruption, pay little or no taxes and enjoy record profits.
Instead of restoring civil liberties, we have seen their further erosion with the extension of the Patriot Act, the increase of surveillance on the web, and a declaration by the president of the right to assassinate American citizens without any legal sanction whatsoever.
Indefinite detentions have not only continued under Obama, but he has also made sure that proven innocence is no cause for release.
This is but a short summary of the reasons for SEIZE DC!

Today the White House and International Energy Agency teamed up to try to help the US economy. In a rare coordinated effort, 60 million barrels of oilwill be unleashed onto global markets, with 30 million from America’s strategic petroleum reserve and the other from IEA stocks.
The IEA says the move is being done to replace output lost by the mess in Libya, which has taken about 1.5 million barrels per day off the market. (It sounds good in a press release, but our viewers know that even with Libyan production going off-line global oil supplies have actually been rising the last few quarters so this explanation rings hollow).
But enough on oil, because that’s not what this is really about anyway.
It’s about the White House finally recognizing what millions of American families already know: the economy is still too weak, the recovery too slow, and they need to try something new.
That’s bad news, but the worse news is that there probably isn’t much that the White House, Fed, OPEC, HUD or any other acronym can do to fix it. Even the combined might of the President and Ben Bernanke can’t overcome millions of deleveraging American households.

WASHINGTON – A U.S. official says Osama bin Laden has been buried at sea.
After bin Laden was killed in a raid by U.S. forces in Pakistan, senior administration officials said the body would be handled according to Islamic practice and tradition. That practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours, the official said. Finding a country willing to accept the remains of the world’s most wanted terrorist would have been difficult, the official said. So the U.S. decided to bury him at sea.
May 02 — ABC News’ Jonathan Karl (@jonkarl) reports: Now that bin Laden has been killed and his body has been positively identified, what is to be done with his remains?
U.S. officials tell me the last thing they want is for his burial place to become a terrorist shrine.
To avoid that, an informed source tells me, the intention is the bury his body at sea — leaving no definitive location for the final resting place of his body.
May 02 (Wall Street Journal) WASHINGTON — Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden is dead, President Obama said. The U.S. has his body in its possession, U.S. officials said late Sunday.
Mr. bin Laden was killed in a joint raid overnight Sunday in Pakistan’s northwestern district of Abbottabad, some 40 miles from Islamabad, according to a senior Pakistani official.
The town also is home to a Pakistani military academy. Two American helicopters took part in the operation, the official said. One Pakistani helicopter involved in the raid crashed after it was hit by firing from militants.
President Barack Obama made the announcement late Sunday at the White House.

Veteran US Journalist Helen Thomas said that Jews have “total control” over the White House and US Congress, telling Playboy magazine in an interview to be published in April, “Everybody is in the pocket of the Israeli lobbies.”
Thomas, who covered the White House for more than six decades, was forced to resign from her position at Hearst Corp. last year, after saying in an interview that Jews should “get the hell out of Palestine” and “go home to Poland, Germany and the United States.”
Thomas appeared to show no regret for last year’s comments, reiterating in the Playboy interview her belief that “Israelis have the right to exist-but where they were born.”
“Why shouldn’t I say it? I knew exactly what I was doing-I was going for broke. I had reached the point of no return. You finally get fed up,” Thomas said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new assessment of President Barack Obama’s budget released Friday says the White House underestimates future budget deficits by more than $2 trillion over the upcoming decade.
