Increasing Risk Of Radioactive Metals Around The World

Nuclear Risks at Bed, Bath & Beyond Show Dangers of Scrap (Bloomberg, Mar 20, 2012):

Going shopping? Don’t forget your wallet and credit card. Or Geiger counter.

The discovery of radioactive tissue boxes at Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc. (BBBY) stores in January raised alarms among nuclear security officials and company executives over the growing global threat of contaminated scrap metal.

While the U.S. home-furnishing retailer recalled the boutique boxes from 200 stores nationwide without any reports of injury, the incident highlighted one of the topics drawing world leaders to a nuclear security meeting in Seoul on March 26-27. The bi-annual summit, convened by President Barack Obama for the first time in 2010, seeks to stem the flow of atomic material that has been lost, stolen or discarded as trash.

As U.S. and European leaders tackle the proliferation of weapons-grade uranium or plutonium in countries like Iran and North Korea, industries are confronting the impact of loose nuclear material in an international scrap-metal market worth at least $140 billion, according to the Brussels-based Bureau of International Recycling. Radioactive items used to power medical, military and industrial hardware are melted down and used in goods, driving up company costs as they withdraw tainted products and threatening the public’s health.

‘Major Risk’

“The major risk we face in our industry is radiation,” said Paul de Bruin, radiation-safety chief for Jewometaal Stainless Processing BV, one of the world’s biggest stainless- steel scrap yards. “You can talk about security all you want, but I’ve found weapons-grade uranium in scrap. Where was the security?”

Fukushima Farmers Face Decades of Tainted Crops

Fukushima Farmers Face Decades of Tainted Crops as Fears Linger (Bloomberg, Mar 18, 2012):

Farmers in Japan’s Fukushima face years of additional losses as consumers continue to doubt the safety of produce from the region devastated a year ago by the tsunami and nuclear fallout, which may taint crops for decades.

Almost 100,000 farmers lost about 58 billion yen ($694 million) by March 1, or 25 percent of production, according to JA, the country’s biggest agricultural group. Imports of farm products jumped 16 percent to 5.58 trillion yen in 2011, according to the agriculture ministry.

Inadequate testing by the government of rice, milk and fish from the region has prompted consumers to leave them on supermarket shelves and instead select produce from other regions or from overseas. Checks conducted nationwide so far are only 1 percent of what Belarus checked in the past year, a quarter century after the Chernobyl disaster, according to Nobutaka Ishida, a researcher at Norinchukin Research Institute.

Professor Yukio Hayakawa Takes A Walk In Fukushima City, Detects Very High Levels Of Radiation

Professor Yukio Hayakawa Takes a Walk in Fukushima City, 3/16/2012 (EX-SKF, Mar 16, 2012):

armed with 4 different radiation survey meters. One of the reasons he went to Fukushima was apparently to test the survey meters and compare the readings. The entire walk took 7 hours yesterday, says Hayakawa in his tweet, nothing compared to mountain climbing. (He’s a volcanologist.)

4.164 microsieverts/hour on the “black dust” – roadside sediment of soil and organic materials. (It is not just in Minami Soma City, where the highest radioactive cesium density in the “black dust” so far is 3.43 million becquerels/kg.)

Over 10 microsieverts/hour (all his survey meters went overscale) at the rain gutter.

2.3 microsieverts/hour on the lawn in front of the City Hall, 1.5 microsievert/hour 1 meter off the lawn.

Australia ‘Ideal’ For Radioactive Fukushima Soil and Debris, Says Former Australian Minister

Australia Is “Ideal” for Contaminated Soil and Debris from #Fukushima (EX-SKF, Mar 19, 2012):

Dr. Haruki Madarame, who is resigning as the head of the Nuclear Safety Commission, is remembered by me as having spoke the universal truth when he said “It’s all about money, isn’t it?” when it comes to nuclear waste.

Here’s an ex-minister in Australia, which has been spared with any contamination from Fukushima I Nuke Plant accident, wanting to bring in the contaminated soil and debris from Fukushima to Australia and stored it for the Japanese, in return for the future sales of uranium to Japan and more funding from Japan for the construction projects in western Australia.

The former sports minister now works for a law firm in Tokyo. He also happens to be the chairman of a junior miner. Talk about conflict of interest. And he is proposing to put the contaminated soil and debris on western and southern Australian deserts.

(On second thoughts… It may be better than having the debris burned all over Japan…)

From The Australian (3/15/2012):

Australia ‘ideal’ for Fukushima soil

Rick Wallace

A HOWARD government minister has entered the nuclear-waste debate by arguing that Australia should accept radioactive debris from the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Former sports minister Andrew Thomson said the move would help break a deadlock in Japan that is jeopardising recovery efforts from last year’s March 11 tsunami and nuclear meltdown.

Goshi Hosono Short on Facts on Debris-Peddling Commercial (EX-SKF, Mar 18, 2012):

The Ministry of the Environment has a 2-minute-long commercial featuring Minister Goshi Hosono, aka disaster debris pusher, in front of the mountains of disaster debris in Ishinomaki City in Miyagi Prefecture.

Just about every single sentence he utters is short on facts and accuracy and full of misrepresentation.

From the Ministry of the Environment commercial below, translated and captioned by Tokyo Brown Tabby:

Hosono: As you can see, this is a huge mountain of debris.

Fact: Debris is actually neatly piled up, because it has been removed from the immediate coastal areas hit by the tsunami and is being stored there, as you can see at 0:26 into the video. But the disaster debris wide-area processing is being sold on the perception that the tsunami debris is still littering the streets and people’s backyards after one year.

Hosono: Ishinomaki City cannot complete the disposal alone.

Fact: In fact, the city can. The debris are being stored on the landfill on the bay, not bothering anyone nearby. The city has budgeted nearly 200 billion yen (US$2.4 billion) to do the debris disposal, building 5 new incineration plants on the landfill and in the process creating 1,250 jobs. None of the sister cities of Ishinomaki City has been asked to take the debris.

Hosono: The debris is the remnants of people’s lives.

Fact: Yes it is. So? Is that the reason to spread it all over Japan? Wouldn’t the pieces of lives of people in Ishinomaki want to remain in Ishinomaki?

Hosono: There are people in the city who are discouraged to see the debris in front of them…

Fact: The debris is on the landfill, removed from the areas where people live and work. It is not in front of them.

Fukushima Radioactive Ocean Impact Map (Video – March 2012 Update)

Remember Fukushima: Presenting The Radioactive Seawater Impact Map (ZeroHedge, Mar 16, 2012):

A few days after the one year anniversary of the Fukushima disaster, nobody talks about it anymore. After all it’s “fixed”, and if it isn’t, the Fed will fix it. Remember in the New Normal nothing bad is allowed the happen. So for those who have forgotten, here is a reminder.

From ASR, a global coastal and marine consulting firm, The Radioactive Seawater Impact Map

We use a Lagrangian particles dispersal method to track where free floating material (fish larvae, algae, phytoplankton, zooplankton…) present in the sea water near the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station plant could have gone since the earthquake on March 11th. THIS IS NOT A REPRESENTATION OF THE RADIOACTIVE PLUME CONCENTRATION. Since we do not know exactly how much contaminated water and at what concentration was released into the ocean, it is impossible to estimate the extent and dilution of the plume. However, field monitoring by TEPCO showed concentration of radioactive Iodine and Cesium higher than the legal limit during the next two months following the event (with a peak at more than 100 Bq/cm3 early April 2011 for I-131 as shown by the following picture).

Assuming that a part of the passive biomass could have been contaminated in the area, we are trying to track where the radionuclides are spreading as it will eventually climb up the food chain. The computer simulation presented here is obtained by continuously releasing particles at the site during the 2 months folllowing the earthquake and then by tracing the path of these particles. The dispersal model is ASR’s Pol3DD. The model is forced by hydrodynamic data from the HYCOM/NCODA system which provides on a weekly basis, daily oceanic current in the world ocean. The resolution in this part of the Pacific Ocean is around 8km x 8km cells. We are treating only the sea surface currents. The dispersal model keeps a trace of their visits in the model cells. The results here are expressed in number of visit per surface area of material which has been in contact at least once with the highly concentrated radioactive water.

Neotame Is 13,000 Times Sweeter Than Sugar And Even More Toxic Than Aspartame

In the event that the public becomes too informed and savvy about toxic additives in our food supply, what’s a multi-billion dollar industry to do? The first step is to create another more toxic version of the additive. The second step is to collude with regulatory authorities such as the FDA to convince the public that the new, more toxic additive is safe. The third and final step is to prevent the toxic additive from being listed on any ingredient labels. From the folks that brought us Aspartame, meet Neotame, a deadly sweetener that you’ll never see on a label because…well that’s just the way the FDA wants it.

Neotame is officially marketed as an inexpensive artificial sweetener made by NutraSweet, which is a former division of Monsanto and original manufacturer of aspartame.

Eighty percent of all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) complaints pertain to aspartame’s adverse reactions. These reports include: grand mal seizures, brain tumors, blindness and other health-related problems, including deaths. Monsanto’s Nick Rosa stated in 1998, that Neotame is “based on the aspartame formula.”

It is up to 13,000 times sweeter than sucrose (table sugar). The product is very attractive to food manufacturers, as its use greatly lowers the cost of production compared to using sugar or high fructose corn syrup (due to the lower quantities needed to achieve the same sweetening).

Neotame is aspartame plus 3-di-methylbutyl, which can be found on the EPA’s list of most hazardous chemicals. The aspartame formula is comprised of Phenylalanine [50%], which caused seizures in lab animals and Aspartic Acid [40%], which caused “holes in the brains” of lab animals — bonded by Methyl Alcohol, or Methanol [10%] which is capable of causing blindness, liver damage and death.

Methanol, or wood alcohol in aspartame breaks down further in heat and in the body, into Formaldehyde (embalming fluid), Formic Acid (venom in ant stings) and the most deadly of all — Diketopiperazine (DKP), a brain tumor agent.

When it comes to human health, neotame is in the same dangerous category as aspartame, but it is a deadlier neurotoxin, immunotoxin and excitotoxin. The long-term effects are essentially cell-death.

Fukushima Dam: Mud Sample Contains Radioactive Cesium At 3,000,000 Bq/m2

3,000,000 Bq/m2 of cesium from the dam in Fukushima (Fukushima Diary, Mar 13, 2012):

Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology found out high level of cesium is concentrated in the bottom of the lake called Horai dam. This dam is to generate electricity, located in Nihonmatsu (60km North west to Fukushima plants), where is in Abukuma river.

Prof. Onda from Tsukuba university reported the mud sample taken in 20 cm deep underground of the bottom of the lake contained 3,000,000 Bq/m2 of cesium, where other samples taken in 4 other reservoirs around Horai lake showed 200,000~400,000 Bq/m2 of cesium.(July and August in 2011)  3,000,000 Bq/m2 is as contaminated as soil of 20km area.

Prof. Onda explains, cesium doesn’t melt into the water. Water of downstream is not harmful to drink.

However, they also found out that when the soil is highly contaminated, water of the downstream river is also highly contaminated, which proves Prof. Onda is wrong. Cesium was attached to the small swimming sand, which is smaller than 0.1mm diameter.

Brookings Intitute’s nonresident fellow and former Washington Post writer Mr. Paul Blustein derides the Japanese for their irrational fear of radiation and joins Cyndi Lauper in scolding the Japanese for refusing to accept and burn the disaster debris in their neighborhood.

In the article commemorating the one-year anniversary of the disaster, the resident of Kamakura City writes in Washington Post (emphasis is mine),

… That spirit has faded, however, as divisions have erupted over nuclear power. The national discussion of the country’s reliance on atomic energy has degenerated into farce as many people have become increasingly — and irrationally — preoccupied with how radiation from the crippled Fukushima Daiichipower plant might affect them. Large segments of the population are so petrified, and so militant in their fear, that most local governments outside Tohoku are refusing to accept for burial some of the millions of tons of rubble left by the tsunami. (And I’m talking about the remnants of smashed buildings and vehicles in other prefectures, not junk from the nuclear plant’s vicinity.)

41 States Sell Out to Merck’s HPV Shot Gardasil Vaccine Lobbyists (Natural Society, Mar 9, 2012):

Since 2006, 41 states have introduced legislation to support the HPV vaccine industry, despite the danger of death and injury. Shockingly, Dr. Diane Harper, a lead developer of Merck’s Gardasil HPV vaccine, warns against Gardasil vaccine deaths and she advocates complete disclosure about the risk of death and adverse reactions (including Guillian-Barre syndrome) to parents and patients. Dr. Harper also acknowledges that the CDC’s death rate data is skewed.

95% of infections from HPV resolve on their own with zero government intervention. Cervical cancer is rare, and only 10% of adverse reactions to vaccines are reported. Merck and GSK are the top 2 HPV vaccine makers.

The HPV vaccine legislation in 41 states includes mandatory vaccination, funding Merck and GSK’s HPV vaccines, removing parental rights by removing parental consent for the HPV vaccine, or educating the public about the HPV virus. Currently, New York is considering legislation making vaccines mandatory.

The federal government pays for more than 40% of HPV vaccinations. The HPV vaccine is given in 3 doses and costs over $300. Most of the girls targeted for HPV vaccination conveniently have private insurance.

Overcoming ‘Fukushima Syndrome’

Overcoming ‘Fukushima syndrome’ (Voice Of Russia, Mar 11, 2012):

On Sunday, Japan observed a moment of silence to mark the exact time a devastating earthquake and a subsequent tsunami hit the country’s northeastern areas one year ago, killing 16,000 people and leaving another 3,000 missing.

About 330,000 houses were destroyed in the magnitude-9.0 quake which set off the 10-meter-high tsunami on March 11, 2011. Prefectures of Ivate, Miyagi and Fukushima were hardest hit by the quake-tsunami disaster which took place at 2:26 p.m. local time. Coastal areas are yet to be cleared of the debris, officials said.

The quake triggered a serious accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant which prompted the evacuation of about 160,000 people. Radiation leaked from the plant after a series of fires and explosions damaged the facility’s reactors. In an interview with the Voice of Russia aired on Sunday, Moscow-based expert Igor Ostretsov said that the Fukushima plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), should have shown initiative in tackling the breakdown. TEPCO’s initial reaction to the accident really raises eyebrows, he added.

“They had at least 24 hours to restore everything, Ostretsov says, expressing surprise about TEPCO’s initially playing down the accident. The moment was missed, and the situation seriously deteriorated, he adds, referring to the Fukushima NPP reactor’s meltdown and a subsequent leak of radioactive water into the ocean.”

As a result, radioactive cesium was then found in the water, soil and food in Japan. Earlier in the week, medics said that plutonium-241 was detected in the 30-km evacuation zone around the Fukushima NPP. Plutonium-241 has a half-life of 14 years, and it then decays into highly toxic americium-241 which is easily absorbed by bean plants, including soya which is widely used by the Japanese. Medics also said that more than 60 people from areas adjacent to the Fukushima NPP sustained thyroid radiation exposure that was caused by radioactive iodine, emitted by the crippled Fukushima plant.

Moscow-based environmentalist Alexei Yablokov likened the Fukushima disaster to an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 – something that he said had global repercussions at the time.

As far as the Fukushima breakdown is concerned, the bulk of radionuclides went into the ocean which will be fraught with serious consequences, Yablokov says, referring to fish that is contaminated with Fukushima radionuclides and is on sale in eastern Japan. Plutonium emissions from the Fukushima NPP affected America and Europe, the expert says, mentioning Lithuania, the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Chukotka Region.
