‘The Chernobyl Zone Is A Population Sink, Or An Ecological Trap’ For Birds, Says Biologist Tim Mousseau, Expects Fukushima To Be Even Worse

A year after Fukushima, the government has asked residents to bury radiated soil in their own backyards. But how dangerous is the dirt and where should it go? NBC News Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel reports.

Fewer female birds after Chernobyl, study finds; same true at Fukushima? (MSNBC, April 19, 2012):

Scientists are focusing on Japan’s Fukushima area after a study published this week found an alarming development at another nuclear disaster site — Chernobyl.

The proportion of female birds has fallen off since the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl, the study found, and that appears to be causing male birds to increase their chirping in efforts to find a mate.

“The Chernobyl zone is a population sink, or an ecological trap, that brings in new birds each year but these birds suffer lower survival,” co-author Tim Mousseau, a University of South Carolina biologist, told msnbc.com.

“In other words,” he said, “the Chernobyl zone is not an eden for wildlife” as some have claimed.

Mousseau, who’s leading a team along with Anders Pape Moller of the University of Paris-Sud, is now in the Fukushima area preparing to test birds there for radioactivity from the nuclear reactors hit by the tsunami after the March 11, 2011, earthquake.

NBC’s Richard Engel visits the exclusion zone surrounding Japan’s damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

“We will be placing small dosimeters on birds and measuring body content of radionuclides,” he said. That will also be done this summer around Ukraine’s Chernobyl area, where earlier testing focused on counting birds.

For the Chernobyl study “we collected 1,080 birds using mist nets in forested areas that were highly contaminated but also in areas that were effectively ‘clean’ and sites in between,” Mousseau explained.

In the more contaminated areas, most birds were yearlings, suggesting that survival rates were significantly lower in these areas than in clean ones.”

Polar Bears Show Signs of Mysterious Illness (alaskapublic, April 6, 2012):

Biologists have found Polar Bears in the Beaufort Sea with hair loss and skin lesions. Those are the same symptoms that have sickened ice seals and walruses in the arctic since last summer and led the federal government to declare the incident an unusual mortality event. Scientists are just beginning an investigation into whether polar bears are suffering from the same thing.

“The first day we observed it was on March 21st and we had three captures and two of them had Alopecia, which is the skin loss and so it was like, ‘oh that’s interesting.’ Then we started picking it up on other animals in later march so it was like, this is more than normal.”

Owning Pigs a Felony in Michigan? Big Ag-Inspired Law Targets Small Farms (AlterNet, March 29, 2012):

Owning certain kinds of pigs — namely the ones not raised on industrial hog farms — could land you in jail for 4 years.

The mangalitsa pig is different than other pigs.  For one thing, it’s covered in thick wool, like a sheep.  It’s got upright ears, and a flat tail.  The farmers at Michigan’s Baker’s Green Acres are fond of the pig.  The thick fur protects them from harsh Michigan winters, and their status as a ‘lard’ pig means that customers prize their marbled meat. They grunt, they eat, and they care for their young just like any other domesticated swine.  In short, they’re just regular pigs — that happen to have black fur.

To Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the black-furred pigs are a threat that must be eliminated.  A law passed in 2010, set to go into effect on April 1, 2012, outlaws the mangalitsa, and many other pigs that don’t fall within their guidelines:

“Possession of the following live species, including a hybrid or genetic variant of the species, and/or offspring of the species or of a hybrid or genetically engineered variant, is prohibited:

(b) Wild boar, wild hog, wild swine, feral pig, feral hog, feral swine, Old world swine, razorback, eurasian wild boar, Russian wild boar (Sus scrofa Linnaeus). This subsection does not and is not intended to affect sus domestica involved in domestic hog production.”

Possession of just one of these animals carries a felony penalty, punishable by up to four years in prison. And the vague language of the law, not clearly outlining which pigs exactly are feral pigs (it hinges on some tricky pig taxonomy), means that determination will be at the discretion of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.  Farmers’ questions have gone unanswered in public forums — they are encouraged to approach the DNR privately bearing pictures of their pigs for the perusal of DNR agents, who will then determine whether the pigs are ‘feral’ or not.

Feral to Whom?

Insane Michigan government announces plan to destroy ranch livestock based on hair color and arrest hundreds of ranchers as felons (Natural News, Mar 27, 2012):

The state of Michigan is only days away from engaging in what can only be called true “animal genocide” — the mass murder of ranch animals based on the color of their hair. It’s all part of a shocking new “Invasive Species Order” (ISO) put in place by Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This Invasive Species Order suddenly and shockingly defines virtually all open-range pigs raised by small family farms to be illegal “invasive species,” and possession of just one of these animals is now a felony crime in Michigan, punishable by up to four years in prison.

The state has said it will “destroy” these pigs beginning in April, potentially by raiding local farms with government-issued rifles, then shooting the pig herds while arresting the members of the family and charging them with the “crime” of raising pigs with the wrong hair color. This may truly be a state-sponsored serial animal killing spree.

Reality check: You may think this story is some kind of early April Fools prank, but it isn’t. This is factually true and verifiable through the documents, videos and websites linked below. The state of Michigan seriously intends to unleash a mass murder spree of pigs of the wrong color beginning April 1.

Yet these are the very pigs that farmers and ranchers in Michigan have been raising for decades. The state doesn’t seem to care about this, and there are indications that this ISO may have been nudged into position by the conventional pork industry as a tactic to wipe out its competition of local, specialty ranching conducted by small families and dedicated farmers who don’t work for the big pork corporations. (The Michigan Pork Grower’s Association.)

Hear the shocking interview and watch the family farm video…

I have recorded an exclusive interview with Mark Baker from Baker’s Green Acres — one of many ranching operations threatened with total destruction by state bureaucrats and this new Invasive Species Order. Listen to that interview here:

Mystery virus kills thousands of lambs (Telegraph, Feb. 25, 2012):

Thousands of lambs have been killed by a new virus that is threatening the survival of many British farms.

The Schmallenberg virus causes lambs to be born dead or with serious deformities such as fused limbs and twisted necks, which mean they cannot survive.

Scientists are urgently trying to find out how the disease, which also affects cattle, spreads and how to fight it, as the number of farms affected increases by the day.

So far, 74 farms across southern and eastern England have been hit by the virus, which arrived in this country in January.

Mainstream Column Admits Vaccines Cause Cancer In Pets

Mainstream column admits vaccines cause cancer in pets (Natural News, Feb. 27, 2012):

Did you know that vaccinating your cat with the typical, recommended feline vaccination schedule may lead to your furry friend developing cancer? In a recent article published in The Ledger, Karri Miller, Central Florida’s only full-time board certified veterinary oncologist, admits that inflammation caused by vaccines can cause some cats to develop cancer years down the road — and yet she still recommends that people have their pets vaccinated.

A telling admission about the serious risks associated with vaccines, Miller’s report highlights the fact that at least one out of every 10,000 cats develops “vaccine-associated sarcomas” as a result of getting vaccinated. Whether it is the mandatory rabies vaccine, or the host of other viral and bacterial vaccines commonly administered to felines, vaccinated cats admittedly have an increased risk of developing cancer in response to the injections.

Vaccine task force says keep injecting cats with cancer-causing vaccines, but do so in spots that will be easy to remove tumors later

The issue has become so serious, in fact, that the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) developed a “Vaccine-Associated Feline Sarcoma Task Force” (VAFSTF) back in 1996 to keep track of the prevalence of the condition, and to investigate ways to help mitigate and prevent it. Besides simply not vaccinating cats at all, the only thing this task force has really come up with so far as a solution is to simply inject vaccines in different spots on cats’ bodies so that, should a tumor end up developing there, it will be easy to treat it with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation (http://www.avma.org/vafstf/sitercmnd.asp).

In other words, vaccines will continue to cause cancer in cats, so the best way, in these experts’ minds, to address the problem is to inject vaccines in areas that will be easier for surgeons to access in the event that they have to remove a tumor at the site. Never would these experts caution cat owners against getting the harmful vaccines in the first place, of course, or at the very least reduce the number of vaccines they choose to get for their cats.

Mitt Romney 2012!

YouTube Added: 15.02.2012

Description:

SHARE the story of Mitt Romney’s dog, who was locked in a crate on top of Mitt’s car for hundreds of miles. He’s now singing the real story — while playing a mean blues guitar.
(Song courtesy of Ry Cooder)

Romney and Seamus the Dog (Wall Street Journal):

It’s a question that has dogged him for years. Why did Mitt Romney once strap the family dog in its carrier to the roof of the car and then set off on a summer vacation to Canada?

The story of the family pet, Seamus, appeared in a 2007 Boston Globe piece.

“As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ‘Dad!’ he yelled. ‘Gross!’ A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who’d been riding on the roof in the wind for hours.

As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway. It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.”

New York Times columnist Gail Collins has famously skewered Mr. Romney for the episode, so much so that some might call it an obsession.

In an interview ranging from the candidate’s shift to a general election tone to the causes of the financial crisis, The Wall Street Journal asked Mr. Romney to give his side of the Seamus story.

“Uh…,”Mr. Romney said, clearly at a loss for words. “Love my dog.”

“That’s all I’ve got for ya,” he added.

But asked to rebut Ms. Collins’ insinuations that he had been mean to his dog, Mr. Romney said,“Oh please. I’ve had a lot of dogs and love them and care for them very deeply.”

At which point his aide said: “We’ve gotta get running.”

Armenian City Besieged By Wolves – Wolves Close In On Yakutia Settlements

Armenian city besieged by wolves (Voice of Russia, Feb 16, 2012):

Residents of the city of Sisian, in the south of Armenia, try not to go out at night for fear of wolves, according to local media reports.

Due to heavy snowfall wolves can not find food in the mountains and at night enter the town in search of food.

The wolves have started to prey on stray dogs as a source of food.

So far there have not been any reported cases of attacks on humans.

(BBC)

Armenia culls wolves after cold snap attacks (AFP, Feb 16, 2012):

YEREVAN — The authorities in Armenia on Thursday offered cash rewards to hunters who kill wolves after increasing reports of attacks on rural villages exacerbated by recent cold weather and heavy snow.

“Because of the heavy snowfall, wolves began to appear more frequently in populated areas and it became necessary to deal with them,” Armenian Environmental Protection Minister Aram Harutiunian told a news conference.

The authorities will pay around $260 (200 euros) to hunters who kill a wolf — a significant amount in impoverished regions of the ex-Soviet republic.

Wolves close in on Yakutia settlements (Voice of Russia, Feb 10, 2012):

Some 240 wolves are closing in on several settlements in Yakutia’s Aldan region, and the residents are under an apprehension for their lives. Poisons were extensively used in the past to fight wolves, but now this is a banned practice.

To use helicopters against wolves would prove quite costly. An ad-hoc centre has been set up in Yakutia, with experts considering the best way to solve the problem. Every year wolves kill many reindeer at deer farms in Yakutia.

Birds That Are Unable To Fly, Allow Humans To Approach Them … Somewhere in Fukushima (Video)

Video of Birds That Don’t Fly, in June 2011 Somewhere in Fukushima (Ex-SKF, Jan. 4, 2012):

A video posted by a resident somewhere in Fukushima Prefecture in June last year shows two birds in his/her front garden unable or unwilling to fly even when approached by a human.

The video was uploaded by MAYODORA in June 2011; it was posted at GeorgeBowWow’s blog on December 23, 2011 (his blog is in Japanese only). GeorgeBowWow thinks the birds may be affected by radiation. The bird (bulbul) in the beginning of the video dropped from the persimmon tree, MAYODORA writes in the Youtube description of the video. MAYODORA says he/she measured radiation on the bird with his/her survey meterand it was rather high.

No information as to what happened to those birds afterwards.

FDA Withdraws Plan To Limit Antibiotics Use in Healthy Livestock Intended For Human Consumption

FDA draws criticism after U-turn on antibiotics in animal feed (Guardian, Dec. 29, 2011):

Environmental groups dismayed after agency drops long-held plan to regulate use of human antibiotics fed to healthy animals

Environmental and consumer groups have condemned the US Food and Drug Administration’s move to renege on its long-held policy to regulate the use of human antibiotics in animal feed.

Last week, the agency quietly announced it was withdrawing its plan to limit the use of antibiotics fed to healthy livestock intended for human consumption.

Critics say the U-turn, which comes amid the FDA’s own stated concerns over food safety, is at odds with its obligations to protect the public.

Scientists Test Sick And Dying Alaska Seals For Fukushima Radiation

A ringed seal displays significant hair loss on the Artic Ocean coast near Barrow, Alaska. An unknown disease is killing or weakening ringed seals along Alaska’s north coast. Ringed seals, the main prey of polar bears, and a species that rarely comes ashore, in late July began showing up on the Beaufort Sea coast outside Barrow with lesions on hind flippers and inside their mouths, along with patchy hair loss and skin irritation around the nose and eyes.

Scientists test sick Alaska seals for radiation (MSNBC/Reuters, Dec. 27, 2011):

SEATTLE — Scientists in Alaska are investigating whether local seals are being sickened by radiation from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

Scores of ring seals have washed up on Alaska’s Arctic coastline since July, suffering or killed by a mysterious disease marked by bleeding lesions on the hind flippers, irritated skin around the nose and eyes and patchy hair loss on the animals’ fur coats.

Biologists at first thought the seals were suffering from a virus, but they have so far been unable to identify one, and tests are now underway to find out if radiation is a factor.

Abandoned and starving to death: Hundreds of skeletal horses left to die after worst ever drought ravages crops in Texas (Daily Mail, Dec. 5, 2011):

* Horses being sold for as little as $50 at auction

These are the distressing images of horses left by the side of the road after a year-long drought meant their owners could no longer afford to feed them.

After a year without rain in Texas, coupled with rocketing temperatures, crops have been sparse and the price of a bale of hay has doubled.

The effect on the horse population has been devastating. The number of animals being abandoned is ten times greater than in previous years, according to Richard Fincher of Safe Haven Equine Rescue in Gilmer, in east Texas.

Mr Fincher said: ‘We get 20 to 40 calls a week that horses are alongside the road and left; nobody’s claimed them. Sheriffs are calling us all the time.’

Los Angeles City Council Approves $250 Fines For Barking Dogs ($500 For A Second And $1,000 For A Third Offense)

Los Angeles City Council Approves $250 Fines for Barking Dogs (FOX News, Nov. 02, 2011):

LOS ANGELES – Barking dogs can lead to a hefty fine in Los Angeles.

The City Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance that fines owners of excessively barking dogs $250 for a first offense, $500 for a second and $1,000 for a third if a Department of Animal Services hearing officer decides the pooch is barking too much.

City prosecutor Dov Lesel tells the Los Angeles Times that a dog’s barking would be considered excessive if it continued for 10 minutes or more, or intermittently for a half-hour or more within a three-hour period.

The ordinance is expected to get Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s signature. It would go into effect before the end of the year.

Fukushima Cows Stand 70 Centimeters Deep In Their Own Excrement

Halt of crop farming in Fukushima forces manure to accumulate on cattle farms (Mainichi, Nov. 4, 2011):

FUKUSHIMA — Two months after a government ban on beef was lifted, cattle farmers here are growing increasingly desperate as nearby vegetable farmers have halted production due to the ongoing nuclear disaster, leaving nowhere to take the accumulating manure that was previously used as fertilizer.

“When vegetable farmers are pushed into a dead end, there’s a domino effect that puts us into dire straits, too,” says 51-year-old Kazunori Mizunoya, a cattle farmer raising some 600 cows in Nakajima, a village located 70 kilometers from the troubled nuclear power station.

Not only is the fertilizer shed overflowing with manure, the cows in the barn stand in their own excrement nearly 70 centimeters deep. They sometimes shake their massive bodies as if they’re trying to wiggle free.

Cows like to be clean, and suffer high stress levels and illness when kept in unhygienic conditions. Indeed, almost half the cows in Mizunoya’s barn are experiencing deteriorating health.

Raccoon Dogs Skinned Alive To Make Cheap ‘Ugg Boots’

Brutal: Workers in China skin a raccoon dog, but the animal is still alive and suffering

Skinned alive to make fake Uggs: Horrific footage reveals slow, sickening deaths of raccoon dogs (Daily Mail, Oct. 5, 2011):

Thousands of unsuspecting Britons may be buying imitation Ugg boots made from the pelts of animals skinned alive.

The fur comes from raccoon dogs, a species related to domestic dogs, farmed in China.

A sickening video of the skins being collected has led activists to demand a ban on the trade and call for clearer labelling.

Genuine Ugg boots cost up to £200 and use sheepskin, which is produced in a humane way.

But campaigners have found that other companies in Australia, where the popular boots are made, are using raccoon dog fur farmed in China and labelling it ‘Australian sheepskin’.

Weirdest Day Of Fishing Ever!

Four deer pulled from the icy waters of Stephens Passage, Alaska

Weirdest Day Of Fishing Ever! (Sports And Stuff, August 14, 2011):

I’ve heard of salmon jumping into boats but…

Four deer were pulled from the icy waters of Stephens Passage, Alaska, by a group of locals on Tom Satre’s 62-foot charter vessel. Four juvenile Sitka black-tailed deer swam directly toward the boat.

Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at the humans on board. Clearly, the bucks were distressed. With help, the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals came willingly onto the boat. Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering.

Here the rescued bucks rest on the back of Tom Satre’s boat, the Alaska Quest. All four deer were transported to Taku Harbour. Once the group reached the dock, the first buck that had been pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back, then leapt into the harbour, swam to shore, and disappeared into the forest. After a bit of prodding and assistance from the humans, two others followed suit, but one deer needed more help..

Here he is being transported by Tom Satre:

Tom, Anna and Tim Satre help the last of the “button” bucks to its feet.
They did not know how long the deer had been in the icy waters or if there had been others who did not survive. The good Samaritans (humans) describe their experience as “one of those defining moments in life.” I’m sure it was for the deer, as well.
