An Italian newspaper has quoted the Pope as saying that “about two percent” of Roman Catholic priests are pedophiles. The Pontiff allegedly said that child sex abuse is “a leprosy in our house” and promised solutions to priests’ enforced celibacy.
The article, published in the left-leaning La Republica, is a recollection of an hour long conversation between the Pope and one of Italy’s most respected journalists, Eugenio Scalfari, who is also the founder of the newspaper. Scalfari is an atheist who has written about several past meetings with Pope Francis.
“Many of my collaborators who fight with me [against pedophilia] reassure me with reliable statistics that say that the level of pedophilia in the church is at about two percent,” Pope Francis was quoted as saying.

The prison population is much like you might expect. Loretto has 1,369 prisoners (I never call myself an “inmate.” I’m a prisoner). About 50% are black, 30% are Hispanic, and 20% are white. The rest of the white prisoners are here for drugs, except for a dozen or so who ran ponzi schemes.

The United Nations has accused the United States for failing to pursue cases of child sex abuse among religious leaders and groups.
The Committee on the Rights of the Child released a report this month highlighting widespread sexual abuse committed by clerics and staff of religious institutions in America, along with a lack of measures “to properly investigate cases and prosecute them”.
“The committee is deeply concerned at information of sexual abuse committed by clerics and leading members of certain faith-based organizations and religious institutions on a massive and long-term scale,” the report said.
This comes as the American Catholic Church attempts to tackle an ongoing nationwide scandal over a pattern of covering-up allegations of sexual crimes committed by abusive priests.
