“That amount of radium found to date cannot be explained by gauges, deck markers, and decontamination activities,” wrote Stephen Woods, an environmental cleanup manager at the California Department of Public Health, about Treasure Island, the rectilinear speck of land in the San Francisco Bay two-and-a-half miles of white caps from our kitchen window. It summed up decades of US Government efforts to bury nuclear sins under layers of ignorance.

The US Government created Treasure Island from fill in 1937 and connected it to Yerba Buena Island, the overgrown rock in the middle of the Bay Bridge. After the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939/1940, it became a naval base. In 1993, the Navy started the process of cleaning up the island so that the City of San Francisco, which had agreed to buy it for $105 million, would accept it—pending approval by state health officials.

Meanwhile, 2,800 people, oblivious to what was buried on the island, moved into the housing units they rented from the Navy. Developers are scheduled to break ground on a high-rise complex next year. The population could eventually swell to 20,000. Alas, in an excellent piece of reporting, The Bay Citizen, a nonprofit news organization, reveals a homegrown nuclear debacle kept out of public view by decades of deception.

After World War II, Treasure Island became a training center for nuclear decontamination. In a 2006 report on the cleanup, the Navy concluded that the locations of the USS Pandemonium, the mockup of a ship used for decontamination training, were free from radiation, and that a 170-acre area was ready to be transferred to San Francisco. But contractors hired by the Navy kept running into radioactivity of such magnitude that one worker was exposed to the maximum radiation dosage allowed under Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines and was sent off the job.

Triclosan, an antibacterial chemical widely used in hand soaps and other personal-care products, hinders muscle contractions at a cellular level, slows swimming in fish and reduces muscular strength in mice, according to researchers at the University of California, Davis, and the University of Colorado. The findings appear online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

“Triclosan is found in virtually everyone’s home and is pervasive in the environment,” said Isaac Pessah, professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Biosciences in the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and principal investigator of the study. “These findings provide strong evidence that the chemical is of concern to both human and environmental health.”

Triclosan is commonly found in antibacterial personal-care products such as hand soaps as well as deodorants, mouthwashes, toothpaste, bedding, clothes, carpets, toys and trash bags. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1998 estimated that more than 1 million pounds of triclosan are produced annually in the United States, and that the chemical is detectable in waterways and aquatic organisms ranging from algae to fish to dolphins, as well as in human urine, blood and breast milk.

A U.K. group devoted to helping parents customize appropriate vaccination schedules for their children has been targeted by British authorities for posting scientifically-backed warnings about the dangers of the combination measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine, also known as MMR. BBC News reports that BabyJabs.co.uk has been ordered by the U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to pull information from its website that merely explains the known scientific links between MMR and autism.

Citing a 2002 study in which MMR could not be definitively ruled out as a cause of autism in children, BabyJabs had made claims on its website that MMR “could be causing autism in up to 10 percent of autistic children in the U.K.,” which is a more than reasonable claim. The group also made suggestions that most experts now agree that rates of autism in children are on the rise, and that this rise is not due solely to increased diagnosis.

BabyJabs also included information on its website explaining that the vaccine-strain measles virus has been found in the guts and brains of some autistic children, which is problematic. The U.S. Institute of Medicine (IOM), after all, discovered back in 1994 that vaccine-strain measles virus is capable of causing serious infection, which in some people can lead to death. Around the end of July, I had the professional cleaners wash the roof of our house.
The roof was covered with something like this yellow moss. It was 0.7 ?Sv/h on its surface.

I took 20g of it by a kitchen knife. Radiation meter indicated it was red zone, 1.2 ?Sv/h.

I haven’t measured 1.2?Sv/h from merely 20g of sample even around here known to be hotspot.

It was totally washed off after cleaning, radiation level was decreased a little bit, 0.4 ?Sv/h on the surface, but the yellow substance was still with mud in the rain gutter.
I took 3.6 kg of it with the perfect protective clothing (tyvek, gas mask, goggles, plastic gloves).
I packed the clothing soon after taking off the sample, had shower to clean eyes, ears, nostrils carefully.
This is very dangerous, please don’t do it. I can’t take a responsibility if something happened to you.

The radiation level was 14 ?Sv/h. I haven’t measured higher than 10 ?Sv/h before. It makes sense why the radiation level is high on the second floor.
