What really has virologists alarmed, however, is the 30% death rate currently being observed. As Reuters reports (1) :

It seems the US and EU sanctions escalation has done nothing to calm the tensions between Ukrainians and pro-Russian forces in Donetsk, where according to report ultranationalists from Kiev are involved in a skirmish with local riot police. As the following clip suggests… “rocks and missiles are being thrown from both sides – there are injuries and scenes of absolute brutality as both sides clash.”

NY Rep. Michael ‘I’ll Break You In Half’ Grimm Indicted On 20 Counts Of Fraud

NY Rep. Michael “I’ll Break You In Half” Grimm Indicted On 20 Counts Of Fraud (ZeroHedge, April 28, 2014):

NY Republican Congressman, and former FBI agent (ironically), Michael Grimm – who became infamous for threatening an NY1 reporter “I’ll throw you off the fucking balcony… I’ll break you in half” – has been indicted on campaign finance charges as well as mail, wire, and healthcare fraud. Oh and since he seemed such a trustworthy and honest chap after his apology for the prevous threats, he is also being charged with perjury after lying about all the other shit he did… Welcome to American politics… As AP reports, he has pleaded not guilty to the 20-count federal indictment.

As CBS Reports,

He’s charged with engaging in schemes to underreport wages for restaurant workers, including some who were in the country illegally. He’s accused of concealing more than $1 million in sales and wages.

“As a former FBI agent, Rep. Grimm should understand the motto: fidelity, bravery, and integrity. Yet he broke our credo at nearly every turn,” FBI Assistant Director George Venizelos said in a statement. “In this 20-count indictment, Rep. Grimm lived by a new motto: fraud, perjury, and obstruction.”

Pro-Russian Mayor Of East Ukraine City Of Kharkiv Shot In The Back

Pro-Russian Mayor Of East Ukraine City Of Kharkiv Shot In The Back (ZeroHedge, April 28, 2014):

On the day in which Barack Obama announced earlier he would unveil another round of sanctions against Russia (most likely involving the heads of both Gazprom and Rosneft), moments ago the already tense situation took another turn for the worse when Interfax blasted news out of East Ukraine that the pro-Russian mayor of Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine, Gennady Kernes, has been shot in the back and is currently undergoing an operation.

Kyiv Post reports that Kernes was an avid supporter of former President Viktor Yanukovych and spoke out against the EuroMaidan Revolution that forced the ex-head of state to flee the country. Since then, Kernes has flip-flopped under pressure from EuroMaidan activists and the new Kyiv government in order to remain in office.

Following the news, presidential candidate and close Kernes confidant Mikhail Dobkin canceled his scheduled press conference.

Russian ‘Doomsday Plane’ Flies For 4th Consecutive Day; Accompanies Putin On Spiritual Mission

Russian “Doomsday Plane” Flies For 4th Consecutive Day; Accompanies Putin On Spiritual Mission (ZeroHedge, April 27, 2014):

Following three consecutive days of missions by the Russian “Doomsday Plane”, i.e. the Tupolev Tu-214SR communication relay aircraft, which as we reported first on Friday, has been circling in proximity to Finland, above the island of Valaam in Lake Ladoga, moments ago, deep in the Russian night, the plane which traditionally accompanies Putin took off from Moscow’s Vnukovo airport and is once again making loops over Valaam island (flight can be tracked in real-time for the next several hours with FlightRadar24).

RSD49

It appears that the reason for the now daily flights centered on the island of Valaam, is that Putin is visiting his “spiritual mentor” in a monastery located on the island far from the mainland, the Valaam monastery is one of the Russian Orthodox Church’s holiest and most isolated sites.

It was only a week ago when we reported that the Chinese Police, for the first time in over 60 years of “pacifism”, has resumed arming itself as more than 1,000 street-patrol officers began carrying 9mm revolvers. “Shanghai officers, according to the city police bureau, will increasingly be equipped “to respond to all violence and terror” with a revolver using real and rubber bullets.  It said officers are getting training in the largest cities in Tibet, Xinjiang, Hunan, Sichuan and Yunnan, where Kunming is the capital.”

Russia Seeks Eurasian Hegemony, With Germany’s Help

Russia seeks Eurasian hegemony, with Germany’s help (Al Jazeera, April 27, 2014):

A 100-year-old theory may explain Putin’s strategic thinking

The White House response to the advance of the pro-Russian faction in Ukraine is to ignore Russian President Vladimir Putin, to pressure the Kremlin’s economic strengths and to treat the Russian Federation as a pariah state.

Not only is this policy unoriginal — a soft reprise of the Cold War’s containment doctrine — but it also ignores the hard-won lessons of geopolitical history, especially those of the last 100 years.

Epidemic Of Hunger: New Report Says 49 MILLION Americans Are Dealing With Food Insecurity

Epidemic Of Hunger: New Report Says 49 Million Americans Are Dealing With Food Insecurity (Economic Collapse, April 27, 2014):

If the economy really is “getting better”, then why are nearly 50 million Americans dealing with food insecurity?  In 1854, Henry David Thoreau observed that “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation”.  The same could be said of our time.  In America today, most people are quietly scratching and clawing their way from month to month.  Nine of the top ten occupations in the U.S. pay an average wage of less than $35,000 a year, but those that actually are working are better off than the millions upon millions of Americans that can’t find jobs.  The level of employment in this nation has remained fairly level since the end of the last recession, and median household income has gone down for five years in a row.  Meanwhile, our bills just keep going up and the cost of food is starting to rise at a very frightening pace.  Family budgets are being squeezed tighter and tighter, and more families are falling out of the middle class every single day.  In fact, a new report by Feeding America (which operates the largest network of food banks in the country) says that 49 million Americans are “food insecure” at this point.  Approximately 16 million of them are children.  It is a silent epidemic of hunger that those living in the wealthy areas of the country don’t hear much about.  But it is very real.

The Quest To Freeze ‘Putin’s Billions’

putin smile 2_1_0

The Quest To Freeze “Putin’s Billions” (ZerHedge, April 27, 2014):

Just over a month ago, in the latest round of sanctions against Russia, and specifically Putin’s inner circle of advisors and lieutenants, one person was singled out – Gennady Timchenko, part-owner of the Gunvor Group commodities trading company, the fourth largest oil trader in the world with over $90 billion in 2013 revenues.

This name was particularly notable because as part of the justification for adding Timchenko to the list of sanctioned oligarchs, the US Treasury said that “Putin has investments in Gunvor and may have access to Gunvor funds.” This is curious because in 2008 The Economist also linked Putin to Timchenko. Timchenko promptly sued but later dropped the case, and The Economist issued a statement. “We accept Gunvor’s assurances that neither Vladimir Putin nor any other senior Russian political figures have any ownership in Gunvor.”

Americans’ Complicity In The Prison Rape Crisis

Americans’ complicity in the prison rape crisis (Al Jazeera, April 27, 2014):

The target of jokes and indifference, sexual assault has become part of the American prison experience

The Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women, a maximum-security prison in Wetumpka, Ala., was built in 1942 to house 400 inmates. Today the facility houses more than 900 women and is the subject of a major investigation by the Department of Justice. In a report in January, the DOJ called Tutwiler a “toxic, sexualized environment,” citing a sordid history of overcrowding, poor staffing and limited oversight. More than a third of the prison staff have had sex with inmates.

Rape and sexual assault are as basic to the American prison experience as bars and bunk beds. The statistics are not entirely reliable, but in 2011 alone, the Justice Department estimates, roughly 200,000 inmates were sexually abused in detention facilities by prison staff or fellow inmates. Some were forced to perform sexual acts in exchange for sanitary supplies or to avoid punishment, while others were attacked, and submitted out of sheer powerlessness. The majority of these rape victims are men, leading some to ask whether the U.S. is the only country in the world where more men are raped than women. The prison rape epidemic is part of a broader human rights crisis. Home to less than 5 percent of the world’s population, the U.S. houses roughly a quarter of the world’s prisoners. Many are nonviolent offenders and suffer from drug addiction, mental illness or crushing poverty.

US Failing To Push Economic Sanctions Against Russia Through EU Allies

US failing to push economic sanctions against Russia through EU allies (RT, April 27, 2014):

The target of jokes and indifference, sexual assault has become part of the American prison experience

The new round of sanctions against Russia, which the EU and the US plan to unveil Monday, will not target the Russian economy. Washington said it won’t use economic sanctions without the EU also signing up to them.

G7 members agreed Friday to roll out a third round of anti-Russian sanctions over the Ukrainian crisis. But those would be an extension of the previous two rounds of sanctions, which targeted 33 individuals in Russia and Ukraine and a Russian bank, which the Western government deemed responsible for the crisis in Ukraine or close enough to President Vladimir Putin to have leverage on him.

A ‘New Israel’… in eastern Texas? (The Times Of Israel, Aptil 26, 2014):

Long-shot congressional candidate Allan Levene has a uniquely improbable two-state solution

JTA — With the Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations floundering, it may, perhaps, be time to consider an entirely different kind of two-state solution. One that involves the State of Texas.

Congressional candidate Allan Levene is proposing to cut the Gordian Knot of Middle East peace by creating a second State of Israel on the eastern coast of Texas, which he would call New Israel. The idea, briefly, is to take (through eminent domain) roughly 8,000 square miles of sparsely populated land bordering the Gulf of Mexico and give it to Israel as a second, non-contiguous part of the State of Israel. Israel would get the land only if it agrees to withdraw to its pre-1967 borders.

The Canadian Housing Bubble Puts Even The US To Shame

The Canadian Housing Bubble Puts Even The US To Shame (ZeroHedge, April 27, 2014):

Since the bursting of the first US housing bubble in 2007, one of the primary explicit goals of the Fed has been to reflate the very same housing bubble (whose pop, together with the credit bubble, nearly wiped out the western financial system) as housing, far more than stocks, is instrumental to the “wealth effect” of the broader population (as opposed to just the 1%).

Sadly for the Fed, instead of recovering previous highs, median housing prices (not to be confused with the ultraluxury high end where prices have never been higher) have stagnated and are now in the downward phase of the fourth consecutive dead cat bounce, curiously matching a like amount of Fed monetary injection episodes.

Russia warns of Europe gas delivery cut over Ukraine debt (PressTV, April 27, 2014):

Russia says Ukraine’s failure to pay its growing gas debt may impact gas delivery to European countries.

Russia’s Energy Minister Alexander Novak said on Saturday that Moscow may be forced to cut off natural gas supplies to Europe over Ukraine’s mounting unpaid gas debt.

According to Novak, Ukraine currently owes Russia over USD 2.230 billion in unpaid gas bills and the debt is to rise, as the figure does not include 1.3 billion for deliveries made in April.

Dr. Paul Craig Roberts: Moving Closer To War

Dr. Paul Craig Roberts was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury during President Reagan’s first term. He was Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal. He has held numerous academic appointments, including the William E. Simon Chair, Center for Strategic and International Studies, Georgetown University, and Senior Research Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University.

Moving Closer To War (Paul Craig Roberts, April 26, 2014):

The Obama regime, wallowing in hubris and arrogance, has recklessly escalated the Ukrainian crisis into a crisis with Russia. Whether intentionally or stupidly, Washington’s propagandistic lies are driving the crisis to war. Unwilling to listen to any more of Washington’s senseless threats, Moscow no longer accepts telephone calls from Obama and US top officials.

The crisis in Ukraine originated with Washington’s overthrow of the elected democratic government and its replacement with Washington’s hand-chosen stooges. The stooges proceeded to act in word and deed against the populations in the former Russian territories that Soviet Communist Party leaders had attached to Ukraine. The consequence of this foolish policy is agitation on the part of the Russian speaking populations to return to Russia. Crimea has already rejoined Russia, and eastern Ukraine and other parts of southern Ukraine are likely to follow.
