Seafood in popular Darwin fishing spots contaminated by toxic foam:

Seafood in two creeks near Darwin airport is contaminated with toxic firefighting chemicals at levels similar to the notorious Williamtown red zone, research has found.

The Northern Territory government on Thursday released the results of two contamination studies at Rapid and Ludmilla creeks.

The creeks are popular fishing spots, including for the local Indigenous community, but are thought to have been contaminated by decades-long use of toxic firefighting foam, including at the nearby Darwin international airport and RAAF base.

A leading eco-toxicologist has warned that the quantity of synthetic chemicals entering our watershed is feminizing fish populations to such a degree that several species now boast transgender and intersex fish, with eggs in their testicles.

“If you look in terms of what gets into a fish’s liver or gonad, the analysis of the chemicals it contains is a bit of a blueprint in terms of what’s flushed down the toilet,” Professor Charles Tyler, of the University of Exeter said, speaking to The Independent.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife point to preliminary data from the Sacramento River that indicates salmon runs have also dropped to record low levels. According to Dan Bacher’s reporting, last year’s salmon run on the Klamath River was a 38-year low… Gary Reedy, SYRCL’s consulting salmon expert reports that “A new crash for the Central Valley Chinook salmon is not unexpected.”…
