Russia And China Stand In Agreement On Ukraine

Russia And China Stand In Agreement On Ukraine – And That Is Very Bad News For The United States (Economic Collapse, March 3, 2014):

So much for “isolating” Russia.  The Chinese government is publicly siding with Russia on the crisis in Ukraine, and that is very bad news for the United States.  Not only does it mean that the U.S. is essentially powerless to do anything about the situation in Ukraine, it also means that Russia and China are starting to understand how much economic leverage that they really have.  Yes, the Obama administration can threaten to slap “sanctions” on Russia or threaten to kick Russia “out of the G8“, but those actions would not actually hurt too much.  On the other hand, Russia and China hold approximately 25 percent of all foreign-owned U.S. debt, and if they started massively dumping U.S. debt it could rapidly create a nightmare scenario.  In addition, it is important to remember that Russia is the largest exporter of natural gas and the second largest exporter of oil in the world.  And China now imports more oil than anyone else on the planet does, including the United States.  If Russia and China got together and decided to kill the petrodollar, they could do it almost overnight.  So when it comes to Ukraine, it is definitely not the United States that has the leverage.

Futures Soar, Near Record As Putin Speaks, Softens Russian Stance On Ukraine

Futures Soar, Near Record As Putin Speaks, Softens Russian Stance On Ukraine (ZeroHedge, March 4, 2014):

Futures are soaring and are just shy of their record high first following news that the Russian military drill has ended, even if Russian troops stationed in the Crimea remain, but more importantly driven by a just completed press conference by Vladimir Putin in his residence outside of Moscow, in which the Russian leader appears to have softened his stance on Crimean aggression, saying he does not consider adding Crimea to its territory. What the market is focusing on is the repeat of Putin’s stance that he will not be sending troops to the Crimea yet (even though they are there already), and that he suddenly appears concerned about the impact on markets and the fallout from sanctions.

As Russian Troops In The Ukraine Hit 16,000, US Department Of Defense Orders Them To Go Home

As Russian Troops In The Ukraine Hit 16,000, US Department Of Defense Orders Them To Go Home (ZeroHedge, March 3, 2014):

While it has gotten to the point where the propaganda is so bad on both sides of the Ukraine crisis, that any numbers thrown about are ridiculous, made up gibberish more fabricated than anything the Chinese Department of Truth or US Bureau of Labor can possibly goalseek, it is worth pointing out that according to AP, Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN said 16,000 Russian troops are now deployed in the Ukraine. This was “revealed” at the third emergency Security Council session meeting in the last four days, shortly after Ukraine’s fugitive president requested Russian soldiers in the strategic Crimea region “to establish legitimacy, peace, law and order,” Russia’s U.N. ambassador said Monday, contradicting the president’s own comments last week.

However, while Russian hypocrisy is to be expected – after all they are the “Evil Empire” to quote a famous actor and president – it is the humor from the self-appointed moral watchdog of all the world’s evils, the US, that was the highlight of today’s UN session:

Readers:

We are having trouble today with the website. I do not know if it is problems caused by the typical incompetence of US business enterprises, including those who host websites and have offshored American jobs to foreign countries, or whether it is National Stasi Agency induced. Certainly, the propagandistic US government does not want any truth available to compete with Washington’s systematic lies. Washington is desperate to control the explanation of the situation in Ukraine that, as a result of Washington’s incompetence, has resulted in Ukraine falling under control of neo-nazi elements, whose rabid anti-semitic and Russophobic actions and rhetoric have caused Ukraine to split in half. Eastern and southern Ukraine are Russian-speaking former Russian territories added to Ukraine in the 1950s by the Communist Party leadership of the Soviet Union. These provinces are agitating to be returned to Mother Russia where they certainly belong. They are determined not to be part of a neo-nazi regime that will be looted by Western bankers and corporations and be forced to host US missile bases that will make western Ukraine a target for nuclear annihilation, like Poland and Czech Republic.

Dr. Paul Craig Roberts: Washington’s Arrogance, Hubris, And Evil Have Set The Stage For War

Washington’s Arrogance, Hubris, and Evil Have Set the Stage for War (Dr. Paul Craig Roberts, March 3, 2014):

In some quarters public awareness is catching up with Stephen Lendman, Michel Chossudovsky, Rick Rozoff, myself and a few others in realizing the grave danger in the crisis that Washington has created in Ukraine.

The puppet politicians who Washington intended to put in charge of Ukraine have lost control to organized and armed neo-nazis, who are attacking Jews, Russians, and intimidating Ukrainian politicians. The government of Crimea, a Russian province that Khrushchev transferred to the Ukraine Soviet Republic in the 1950s, has disavowed the illegitimate government that illegally seized power in Kiev and requested Russian protection. The Ukrainian military forces in Crimea have gone over to Russia. The Russian government has announced that it will also protect the former Russian provinces in eastern Ukraine as well.

Ukraine Denies Russia’s Denial, Claims Ships Threatened With Seizure

Ukraine Denies Russia’s Denial, Claims Ships Threatened With Seizure (ZeroHedge, March 3, 2104):

Minutes after Russia denied it had issued an ultimatum to the Ukraine navy, Ukraine’s acting president has just denied the denial.

  • UKRAINE’S TURCHYNOV SAYS SHIPS THREATENED IF ARMS NOT LAID DOWN
  • UKRAINE’S TURCHYNOV SAYS SHIPS THREATENED WITH SEIZURE
  • UKRAINE’S TURCHYNOV SAYS SITUATION AROUND FLEET IS DANGEROUS
  • UKRAINE’S TURCHYNOV SAYS RUSSIA INCREASING CRIMEA FORCES
  • UKRAINE’S TURCHYNOV SAYS RUSSIAN BLACK SEA FLEET HAS BLOCKED UKRAINIAN NAVY VESSELS IN SEVASTOPOL BAYS
  • TURCHYNOV SAYS SITUATION DIFFICULT IN EASTERN UKRAINE
  • TURCHYNOV CALLS ON RUSSIA TO STOP AGGRESSION

What is curious here is that while it is clear why Russia would benefit from an escalation in hostilities in the Crimea, on which it did not “start” – i.e., allowing it a clear pretext to enter the “east” and “protect” its citizens – what is becoming clear is that it is Ukraine that is desperate to raise the level of hostilities. Why – if it is to force the hand of NATO, EU or the west in providing assistance, this is a wild gambit, which will backfire massively.

Ukrainian special forces regiment joins other units in refusal to march against Crimea (RT, March 3, 2014):

A Ukrainian Special Forces company dispatched in Ukraine’s centermost major city of Kirovograd has disobeyed an order to march on to Crimea, according to one of the officers in the company who spoke to Itar-Tass.

“Today we have been ordered to move toward the Crimean peninsula and disrupt the activity of the Crimean ‘defense forces.’ We have refused to carry out the order,” he told the agency of the order that came Sunday from Ukraine’s Defense Ministry.

The officer added that part of the reason to go against Kiev’s orders was a lack of understanding by the special forces as to whose plans they had to thwart there, and why.

“Many of [our] guys have relatives there. I myself spend summer in Evpatoria,” he said. “Many among us don’t understand whom we are fighting for and against in Crimea.”

The phone-calls are flying. On the heels of yesterday’s Obama-Putin “discussion”, today has seen Merkel drop him a line (with the resultant claim that Putin has accepted a “fact-finding mission” despite all evidence to the contrary); and then Merkel, Obama, and Cameron got on a party-line to discuss “sanctions”.

In the face of this seriousness, we suspect, however, any of the calls to Putin all had a similar dialogue…

Memo To Obama: This Was Their Red Line!

Memo to Obama: This Was Their Red Line! (David Stockman, Mar 2, 2014):

In 1783 the Crimea was annexed by Catherine the Great, thereby satisfying the longstanding quest of the Russian Czars for a warm-water port. In fact, over the ages Sevastopol emerged as a great naval base at the strategic tip of the Crimean peninsula, where it became home to the mighty Black Sea Fleet of the Czars and then the commissars.

For the next 171 years Crimea was an integral part of Russia—a span that exceeds the 166 years that have elapsed since California was annexed by a similar thrust of “Manifest Destiny” on this continent, thereby providing, incidentally, the United States Navy with its own warm-water port in San Diego. While no foreign forces subsequently invaded the California coasts, it was most definitely not Ukrainian and Polish riffles, artillery and blood which famously annihilated The Charge Of The Light Brigade at the Crimean city of Balaclava in 1854; they were Russians defending the homeland.

John Kerry Warns Russia Of Possible Eviction From G-8

Kerry Warns Russia of Possible Eviction From G-8  (New York Times, March 2, 2014):

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State John Kerry warned on Sunday that Russia risked eviction from the Group of 8 industrialized nations if the Kremlin did not reverse its military occupation of Crimea in Ukraine.

“He is not going to have a Sochi G-8,” Mr. Kerry said on the NBC program “Meet the Press,” referring to the meeting of the industrialized nations that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia is to host in June. “He may not even remain in the G-8 if this continues.”

“He may find himself with asset freezes on Russian business,” Mr. Kerry added. “American business may pull back. There may be a further tumble of the ruble. There’s a huge price to pay.”

Mr. Kerry’s comments came as the Obama administration and its Western allies tried to formulate their response to Mr. Putin’s decision to deploy Russian forces in Crimea.

John Kerry Slams ‘Incredible Act Of Aggression’, NATO Says Russia ‘Must Stop’

John Kerry Slams “Incredible Act Of Aggression”, NATO Says Russia “Must Stop” (ZeroHedge, March 2, 2014):

Just in case Obama’s Friday message of “costs” should Russia invade Ukraine, which it did, was lost in translation, here is NATO with the clarification, and more harsh language:

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen convened an emergency meeting of NATO ambassadors in Brussels on Sunday to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

Ahead of the meeting he issued the following statement:

I have convened the North Atlantic Council today because of Russia’s military action in Ukraine. And because of President Putin’s threats against this sovereign nation.

What Russia is doing now in Ukraine violates the principles of the United Nations Charter. It threatens peace and security in Europe. Russia must stop its military activities and its threats.

Today we will discuss their implications, for European peace and security, and for NATO’s relationship with Russia.

In Crimea, Citizens Stand For Self Defense And Mother Russia

In Crimea, citizens stand for self defense and Mother Russia (Al Jazeera, Mar 1, 2014):

In port city of Sevastopol, people wave Russian flags and staff checkpoints to keep out those from Kiev and the West

SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine — Friday night, Vasili Kryshko bought a pair of woodland green hunting waders. A friend accompanying him bought a long waterproof trench coat, also in camouflage, and they set off to serve their shift at the local self-defense battalion checkpoint, 20 miles outside the Crimean city of Sevastopol.

Speaking from the checkpoint, Kryshko said it was set up a week ago to prevent “provocateurs” from Kiev and western Ukraine from coming into the city after three months of protests led to the ouster of president Viktor Yanukovich last Saturday. They are in communication with other battalions across the autonomous peninsula, coordinating security.
