In a last ditch hail mary effort to avoid resignation and new snap elections, Theresa May arrived at Buckingham Palace earlier to meet with the Queen where she will attempt to cling to power by linking her Conservative party with Northern Ireland’s rightwing Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) following the disastrous election that left her short of a governing majority.

As noted earlier, May has reached an understanding with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party to form a coalition U.K. Government. With 649 of 650 seats declared, the Conservatives had won 318 seats and Labour 261. 326 seats are needed for majority. The DUP, which took 10 seats, was considering an arrangement which would involve it supporting a Conservative minority government on key votes in parliament but not forming a formal coalition, Sky said.

Middle-class pensioners are to lose benefits under Conservative plans to fund social care, Theresa May will announce on Thursday.

The Conservative manifesto will set out plans to begin means-testing winter fuel payments and to charge more people who currently receive free care in their own home.

The money saved from means-testing the annual heating handout, worth up to £300, will be used to help close the £2.8?billion social care funding gap.

The Conservatives will also pass legislation to ensure nobody has to sell their home to pay for their care during their lifetime, and new rules will allow pensioners needing nursing home treatment to keep more of their assets.

In the aftermath of last week’s surprising decision by a UK High Court to force a parliamentary vote on Article 50, a hard – or even soft – Brexit suddenly has been put in question, having thrown the government’s plans to launch a two-year divorce process by the end of March into disarray, and sending the Pound soaring. So in her first public statement since the vote, British Prime Minister Theresa May, writing in the Sunday Telegraph, said she is confident of overturning the ruling and vowed that she would deliver a full exit from the European Union, hitting back at critics of her Brexit strategy who have threatened to try to block the process in parliament.

In her op-ed, May signaled she would resist any attempt to force her to change her approach to leaving the EU:

“The people made their choice, and did so decisively. It is the responsibility of the government to get on with the job and to carry out their instruction in full,” May wrote. She said members of parliament who regretted the referendum result “need to accept what the people decided”.
