North Korea Confirms It Conducted “Successful Hydrogen Bomb Test” As “Act Of Self-Defense” Against US:

Update: North Korea has confirmed that it has “successfully tested a hydrogen bomb.” The test was “an act of self-defense” against threats like the US.

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake detected near North Korea’s nuclear test site appears to have been artificial, according to South Korea’s meteorological service, raising the prospect the isolated regime tested a nuclear device. As Bloomberg reports, the “earthquake” follows North Korea’s threat in September that it is ready to use atomic weapons against the U.S. at any time and that its main nuclear facility was fully operational. The Pentagon is reportedly “looking into” the quake reports.

If Washington does not cancel its planned military exercises with South Korea, North Korea has issued new nuclear threats and says it is ready to use its latest weapons, which “are unknown to the world.” The drills, called Ulchi Freedom Guardian, are due to start Monday are designed to “protect the region and maintain stability on the Korean peninsula.” However, as expected Pyongyang is not happy, “If [the] United States wants their mainland to be safe,” said state TV, “then the Ulchi Freedom Guardian should stop immediately.”

North Korea faces famine if worst drought in years continues, says South Korea (Independent, 12, 2015):

North Korea faces famine if the country’s drought continues, South Korea’s Ministry of Unification said this week.

Food shortages are common in North Korea, but if the current drought runs on into July then production will likely fall by 20 per cent, the International Business Times (IBT) reported South Korea as saying.

The United Nations food agency is gearing up to send emergency assistance should the situation worsen, David Kaatrud, director of the World Food Program (WFP) told Yonhap news agency.

Obama Sanctions North Korea For Sony Hack Which Was Perpetrated By Disgruntled Former Employee

Obama Sanctions North Korea For Sony Hack Which Was Perpetrated By Disgruntled Former Employee (ZeroHedge, Jan 2, 2014):

US foreign policy just jumped the shark: a few days after both the FBI and the US State department were humiliated when it was revealed that it wasn’t North Korea but a disgruntled, laid off Sony employee that was responsible for the “hack”, and when the best possible course of action would have been to simply let this latest embarrassing incident fade from memory, moments ago Obama – currently not working out next to a rainbow or flashing his support of “Shaka” –  just signed his first executive order of 2015, imposing even more sanctions against North Korea.

From Bloomberg:

President Obama signs order imposing additional sanctions on North Korea in response to country’s “efforts to undermine U.S. cyber-security and intimidate U.S.businesses and artists exercising their right of freedom of speech,” according to Treasury Dept statement.

It Wasn’t North Korea Or Russia: Sony Hack ‘Perpetrator’ Said To Be Laid-Off, Disgruntled Employee

The-interview-Sony-hack

It Wasn’t North Korea Or Russia: Sony Hack “Perpetrator” Said To Be Laid-Off, Disgruntled Employee (ZeroHedge, Dec 30, 2014):

First it was, with “absolute certainly”, North Korea. Then, out of the blue, an even more ridiculous theory emerged about the origin of the Sony hackers: Russia. Now, we finally get the truth, and as it turns out it was neither of the abovementioned sovereign actors who had nothing better to do than to hack movie scripts and racist emails: it was Sony’s own disgruntled worker who was the source of the hack. According to Politico, FBI agents investigating the Sony Pictures hack were briefed Monday by a security firm that says its research points to laid-off Sony staff, not North Korea, as the perpetrator.”

Researchers from the cyber intelligence company Norse have said their own investigation into the data on the Sony attack doesn’t point to North Korea at all and instead indicates some combination of a disgruntled employee and hackers for piracy groups is at fault.

But… but just a week ago the FBI was so absolutely certain it was North Korea it released the following statement:

North Korea Trolls Obama: Compares US President To “A Monkey In A Tropical Jungle”

FYI.

–  North Korea Trolls Obama: Compares US President To “A Monkey In A Tropical Jungle” (ZeroHedge, Dec 27, 2014):

While North Korea had made it very clear that it had nothing to do with the Sony hack, it did demand a full UN-backed investigation, a proposal quickly shot down by none other than the US which always demands full “transparency” of all actions except when actions are its own, or when the resulting transparency would shine an unwanted light on the hypocrisy behind US national interests. Furthermore, in its first statements regarding The Interview, North Korea was actually quite cordial, and said nothing offensive regarding Obama. All that changed overnight when in its first official statement since its Internet went dark – something which if indeed North Korea did not hack Sony, as it claims, would be seen as a clear act of war if it were to happen to any other “developed” country – North Korea finally lost it and decided that the time to troll the US president has finally arrived, when, as the TV anchor says beginning 1:10 minutes in the clip blow, “Obama always goes reckless in speech and action like a monkey in a tropical jungle.

North Korea Internet, Cell Phones Go Dark (ZeroHedge, Dec 27, 2014):

When it comes to crude attempts at humor, The Interview may (and should) have been a stunning flop, but meanwhile the real comedy continues in the real world, whose absurdity has made any IPO of The Onion impossible.

According to Reuters, North Korea’s Internet and 3G mobile networks were paralyzed on Saturday evening, China’s official Xinhua news agency reported on Saturday.

The network had not returned to normal as of 2130 local time, Xinhua reported, citing reporters in the country that had confirmed the situation over fixed telephone systems.

North Korea Warns Of Attacks Against White House, Pentagon And Entire “Cesspool Of Terrorism” That Is America

North Korea Warns Of Attacks Against White House, Pentagon And Entire “Cesspool Of Terrorism” That Is America (ZeroHedge, Dec 22, 2014):

The whole “North Korea hacking Sony” story had gotten so bizarre over the past week, there was nothing stopping it from jumping fully into the rabit hole. Which it did overnight when as the FT reported, North Korea warned of strikes against key sites in the US in retaliation for Washington blaming Pyongyang for the recent Sony cyber attack, saying any US punishment over the incident would lead to damage “thousands of times greater”. The NDC said its 1.2m-member army was ready to use all types of warfare against the US. “Our toughest counteraction will be boldly taken against the White House, the Pentagon, and the whole US mainland, the cesspool of terrorism, by far surpassing the ‘symmetric counteraction’ declared by Obama,” said the NDC statement, carried by official news agency KCNA.

Defiant North Korea Says Can Prove It Is Not Behind Hack “Without Resorting To Torture Like The CIA” (ZeroHedge, Dec 20, 2014):

Just hours after the FBI announced that, with absolute certainty, it had determined that North Korea was behind the Sony hack, a “theory” that has become the butt of global jokes, we learned, in a far less prominent release, that according to an internal inquiry, FBI evidence if “often mishandled.” According to the NYT, “F.B.I. agents in every region of the country have mishandled, mislabeled and lost evidence, according to a highly critical internal investigation that discovered errors with nearly half the pieces of evidence it reviewed.

The evidence collection and retention system is the backbone of the F.B.I.’s investigative process, and the report said it is beset by problems.

It gets better: according to the report, the F.B.I. was storing more weapons, less money and valuables, and two tons more drugs than its records had indicated. Almost as if the FBI was siphoning off cash, while hoarding guns and blow.

North Korea launches upgraded Soviet-era ballistic missile submarine – report (RT, Nov 2, 2014):

Pyongyang is modernizing once obtained decommissioned Soviet diesel submarine capable of carrying ballistic missiles either for active service or as a test bench for constructing a similar sub of its own, South Korean government sources say.

North Korea “imported a Soviet-era Golf-class diesel submarine and modified it,” Yonhap news agency has reported, citing a government source.

The Soviet Union constructed various modifications of Golf-class diesel-electric submarines, also known as ‘Project 629’, starting from 1958. The sub was capable of carrying three single stage liquid-propellant ballistic missiles (types vary on different modifications of the subs), with one nuclear warhead and six torpedo tubes, which could use nuclear torpedoes as well.

Just turn to Leon Panetta’s Worthy Fights: A Memoir of Leadership in War and Peace, wherein the former Secretary of Defense and longtime Democratic party hack congressman recounted a 2010 conversation with the top commander of US troops stationed in South Korea, who told him:

“If North Korea moved across the border, our war plans called for the senior American general on the peninsula to take command of all U.S. and South Korea forces and defend South Korea – including by the use of nuclear weapons, if necessary. I left our meeting with the powerful sense that war in that region was neither hypothetical nor remote but ever-present and imminent.”

By Gordon Duff

The materials below were selected from a huge archive I have been given, some public, some less so, to publish.  In general, minimally, it exposes the US government as dangerous, incompetent and deceitful in its handling of both nuclear materials and our national defense.

In this case, we enter the area where former New Mexico governor, Bill Richardson, former head of the Department of Energy, is now found to have been the subject of an FBI investigation into trading nuclear material with North Korea and the Mossad.  My read on this is that the FBI considered the North Koreans and the Mossad business partners in peddling nuclear material to other nations with Department of Energy chief, Bill Richardson, their “mole,” helping create a planet racing toward doomsday.

N. Korea Has Nuclear Warheads For Missiles That Can Reach Western United States

Report: N. Korea Has Nuclear Warheads for Missiles (Washington Free beacon, May 5, 2014):

ICBMS can reach Hawaii, Alaska, and western United States

North Korea has developed nuclear weapons capable of being launched on its ballistic missile forces, according to a new report by a defense analyst.

The Obama administration is seeking to hide the fact that North Korea possesses nuclear missile warheads, according to a report by Mark Schneider, a former Pentagon strategic analyst and director for forces policy at the office of the secretary of defense. Schneider’s statement came in a report published April 28 in the journal Comparative Strategy.

According to the 16-page report, “The North Korean Nuclear Threat to the United States,” the Defense Intelligence Agency stated in an unclassified assessment made public a year ago that “DIA assesses with moderate confidence the North [Korean government] currently has nuclear weapons capable of delivery by ballistic missiles.”

“This is disturbing news,” the report says. “The North Korean regime is one of the most fanatic, paranoid, and militaristic dictatorships on the planet. … While North Korea has long made occasional nuclear attack threats, the scope, magnitude, and frequency of these threats have vastly increased in 2013.”

Russia’s Duma has voted to forgive 90 percent of North Korea’s Soviet-Era Debt.

On Friday Russia’s parliament voted to write off roughly 90 percent of North Korea’s debt as Moscow seeks to build a gas pipeline through the Hermit Kingdom.

This weekend Reuters reported that Russia’s Duma voted to write off roughly $10 billion worth of the debt that North Korea owes Moscow from the days of the Soviet Union. The vote ratified an agreement made in September 2012, after a meeting between then-President Dmitry Medvedev and then-North Korean leader Kim Jong-il in Siberia in the summer of 2011.

North Korea sailors killed when ship sinks during ‘combat duties’ (Reuters, Nov 4, 2013):

At least 19 North Korean sailors were killed when a naval vessel sank during “combat duties” off the east coast last month, state media said, a rare admission by the impoverished and reclusive country.

South Korean media said the ship sank during a drill killing “scores”.

Photos released by North Korea’s KCNA state news agency showed leader Kim Jong Un laying flowers at the foot of a memorial to the dead, encircled by at least 19 graves emblazoned with the faces of the sailors.

“Submarine chaser No. 233 fell while performing combat duties in mid-October,” KCNA said.

Preparing For A North Korean Collapse

Preparing for a North Korean Collapse (The Diplomat, Oct 31, 2013):

A report by Bruce Bennett and the RAND Corporation has brought attention to one of the most important issues for international politics. Ironically, despite being a region of vital interest within American foreign policy, there has been very little public discussion of what to do in the event of government collapse in North Korea. Bennett’s timely report provides a series of vital contributions to the discussion and further outlines the lack of preparation in political, social, economic and military terms. Yet beyond the critical end game for the Korean peninsula are deeper questions concerning how any international force might respond. Specifically, how can the U.S. and Republic of Korea effectively mobilize regional powers with their differing security and development goals?

North Korea warns of ‘merciless firing’ against South Korea (AFP, Oct 21, 2013):

Seoul — North Korea on Monday warned of “merciless firing” against the South if it goes ahead with a reported plan to develop shells to carry anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border.

The South’s Joong-Ang Ilbo newspaper reported last week that South Korean troops were developing non-explosive hollow shells capable of carrying such leaflets deep into North Korean territory. There has been no official confirmation.

South Korean activists including defectors from the North already regularly launch anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border by balloon, despite the North’s Korean threats to shell the “human scum” involved.
