Tired of Waiting in Greece, Syrians Bid to Return Home

Tired of Waiting in Greece, Syrians Bid to Return Home:

(AFP) – “I want to go back to Syria. There is war in my country, but we’ve been living for seven months in Greece like prisoners.”

Adan, from Aleppo, has abandoned his dream of building a new life in Europe, like thousands of other Syrians trapped in Greece.

He’s just arrived at the station in Didymoteicho, a village near the Greece-Turkey border, with his wife, three children and five other relatives, and is preparing to go through a police checkpoint before trying to get into Turkey, the start of a long journey home.

Greek Government Tells Tax-Burdened Self-Employed: “Go To Bulgaria”

It is not a secret that under the bailout agreements, Greece’s self-employed are charged with higher taxes and social security contributions each and every year. As KeepTalkingGreece.com details, many, especially from northern Greece,  have moved their business basis to neighboring Bulgaria for obvious reasons: 10% tax instead of 29%, low social security contributions, incentives. There is talk that 60,000 businesses have moved in the last seven years of austerity.

No wonder that self-employed and freelancers complain about taxation, contributions and cut pensions, no wonder they are furious about the social security contributions hikes that come with the new year.

Migrants Riot in Greece after Woman and Child Killed by Car:

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Greek police say migrants living in a camp outside the northern city of Thessaloniki have rioted after a woman and her son were struck and killed by a car.

The riot started Sunday night after an ambulance was late to arrive. Camp residents claimed that they asked police to take the 35-year-old Kurdish Syrian woman and her 10-year-old son to a hospital in a patrol car and they refused.

Migrants blocked the road outside the camp, threw rocks at the police and set fire to two patrol cars. Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades. Migrants also set fire to trash cans as a defense against tear gas. Calm has returned to the camp, which hosts about 1,300 migrants.

EU Exit “Only Way Out” From Greece’s “Occupying Force” Of Refugees

EU Exit “Only Way Out” From Greece’s “Occupying Force” Of Refugees:

  • “Allah requires from the believers to be masters of the land where they live, and only they can have property, and only we will be able to own the land.” — Muslim migrants in Crete, Greece.
  • The migrants were ready to wage jihad because they believed a rumor about an event for which, even had it been true, the Greek State and its inhabitants had no responsibility.
  • The establishment in Greece is a miniature of the American establishment: politicians and institutions of government corrupted to the bones.
  • We Greeks have already been crushed by Islam, by the twentieth century genocide in Turkey and the more recent Turkish occupation of Cyprus, again with the world’s complicity.
  • What is happening in Greece, as in much of Europe, is actually a massive replacement of its population, its values and its way of life.
  • The mainstream political parties obey the self-destructive EU policies on immigration that could eventually cause the end of the Hellenic-Judeo-Christian values of Europe, such as individual freedom, critical thinking and dispassionate inquiry.

What does an occupation army do when it is installed in a country? It occupies the land, forcing residents to follow its own way of life. It implements measures against the country’s inhabitants, it propagandizes its beliefs and uses force to have them imposed.

Greece Says It Needs a Year to Properly Shelter Migrant Children

Greece Says It Needs a Year to Properly Shelter Migrant Children:

(AFP) – Greece will need a year to provide adequate shelter for 2,200 unaccompanied migrant children on its soil, even if it has improved its response, the country’s migration minister said Tuesday.

Yannis Mouzalas said there were now no more than 25 minors held in Greek police stations and 1,000 hosted in various specialised facilities.

But most of the unaccompanied migrant children, some 1,200, are still staying in camps scattered across Greek islands in the eastern Aegean sea.

Greece Sees Jump in Migrant Border Crossings:

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Greek police detained 214 Syrian refugees after they crossed a river that forms a natural border with Turkey, authorities said Wednesday.

The announcement marked the second recent mass crossing of the Evros River — 107 refugees were detained in the same border area last week.

A police official told The Associated Press that refugees and other migrants were taking advantage of current low river levels near the border town of Orestiada. The official wasn’t authorized to speak to the news media and asked not to be identified.

Greek Police Fire Tear Gas, Use Pepper Spray On Protesting Pensioners

Greek Police Fire Tear Gas, Use Pepper Spray On Protesting Pensioners:

Familiar scenes returned to Athens today, when Greek police fired teargas at a demonstration of pensioners protesting over cutbacks to their benefits, part of an austerity drive dictated by the Troika (or was it Quadriga). Between 1,500 and 2,0000 pensioners attempted to march to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s office, however they were blocked when riot police blocked their path, intercepting them with pepper spray and tear gas.

Greek pensioners called on the nation to rise against the government’s harsh austerity policy as they attempted to break through a cordon of police buses and special operations troops barring their way to the prime minister’s residence.

As Reuters adds, tensions flared when dozens of pensioners attempted to push over a police bus blocking their way a few hundred meters (yards) from Tsipras’ office.

Bakers Unite As Increasing Number Of Poor Greeks Can’t Even Afford A Loaf Of Bread

Bakers Unite As Increasing Number Of Poor Greeks Can’t Even Afford A Loaf Of Bread:

Almost a year after Greece surrendered into the arms of the international lenders and the International Monetary Fund and the austerity cuts started to affect people’s lives. One Greek explains the dismal reality of everyday life for many…

Did you know that there are people in Greece who cannot afford to buy even a loaf of bread at a cost of €0.60 – €0.70?

A bakery in our neighborhood was offering a bread at a special price for pensioners and unemployed. The special price was just half a euro.

At one point, I remember that more and more people were going to this bakery and asking for bread from the previous day for a couple of cents or even free of charge.

Two days ago, the grim Greek reality hit me again. I was at the bakery sometime at noon. All different kinds of bread loafs were waiting for customers, nicely set in order, one by one, next to each other.

Yet, somewhere, in a corner at one of the lower shelves there was a group of breads: several loaves, long and round, white and wholewheat,  a couple of baguettes.

“What are these?” I asked the baker and he answered “This is bread from yesterday, for the poor. We give it free of charge.”

The exercise will run through September 23.

Greek ‘Thought Police’ Prosecute Bishop For (Accurately) Calling ‘Refugees’, “Illegal Migrants”

Greek ‘Thought Police’ Prosecute Bishop For (Accurately) Calling ‘Refugees’, “Illegal Migrants”:

Submitted by Maria Polizoidou via The Gatestone Institute,

  • The Minister for Immigration Affairs himself, repeatedly stated that 50% to 70% of migratory flows to Greece were illegal migrants and the rest were refugees. The illegal migrants come from 77 different countries.
  • If it is a “racist crime” for a citizen to express accurately the percentages of refugees and illegal migrants entering the country, what will come next, the Thought Police?
  • The real reason for prosecuting Bishop Markos, it seems, is that the government expects that Turkey’s migration deal with the EU will collapse, and that if it does, the migrant flows in the coming months will increase dramatically. The government, according to some members in the opposition, has no friendly way to manage illegal migration and therefore prefers to impose restrictions on freedom of speech and prosecute anyone who objects.
  • The government might scare the Bishop of Chios Island by pressing charges against him and trying to stigmatize him as a racist. But the government will still not scare the angry majority of Greeks.

In coalmines, from 1911 to 1986, canaries operated as an early warning system for the leakage of hazardous gases. Whenever the birds showed signs of distress, the miners knew trouble was coming.

Greece has deep problems. Greece is presently in the “coalmine” of an endless economic and immigration crisis.

When ‘Whatever It Takes’ Fails: 37% Of Italians Give Up Job Hunt As Welfare State Grows

When ‘Whatever It Takes’ Fails: 37% Of Italians Give Up Job Hunt As Welfare State Grows:

With France calling for the EU’s budget limits to be lifted and everyone breaking every rule of fiscal responsibility – because Draghi has killed the market’s signal – the fear of ever deepening deficits is (for now) removed. Enabling governments to do “whatever it takes” to get re-elected, because reforms are vote-killers, has incentivized an ever-growing group of Europeans to simply give up the job search… with Italians at the top of the list…

20160829_EU1_1

Going from the final quarter of 2015 through March of this year, 37 percent of unemployed Italians gave up their job search, while only 13 percent landed new work and a full half found their status unchanged.

Greece Calls On EU For Help With Huge Migrant Population:

The Greek migration minister has called out to the European Union (EU) to help his country handle the tens of thousands of migrants stranded in Greece, claiming the country cannot handle them all alone.

Greek Migration Minister Ioannis Mouzalas made it clear his government cannot handle the sheltering and feeding of an estimated 58,000 migrants by themselves and are appealing for the EU to help. Mr. Mouzalas said that Greece was ready to send 7,000 migrants to other EU states in order to relieve some of the pressure on the Greek government that is still racked with austerity measures and high unemployment. While the EU states are legally bound to help, the minister has claimed so far none have answered his calls, reports Zeit Online.

Greece Plans New Migrant Facilities As New Arrivals Continue To Flood In:

(REUTERS) – Greece plans to reduce overcrowding at migrant camps on its islands, a government official said on Wednesday, to ease growing tensions and improve conditions that campaigners have called “disgraceful”.
