Amid global uncertainty, Greek worries stalk markets _ again

Amid global uncertainty, Greek worries stalk markets _ again:

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Nothing is inevitable in financial markets — except perhaps the return of Greece as a source of concern. More than seven years since Greece’s sky-high debts first unnerved investors and stoked speculation of the end of the euro currency, the country is back in the spotlight for the same reasons.

Survey: Majority of Europeans In 10 Countries Want Halt to Muslim Migration

Survey: Majority of Europeans In 10 Countries Want Halt to Muslim Migration:

A new study on European attitudes toward Muslim migration has revealed that 55 per cent of Europeans in ten different countries want a halt to migration from majority Muslim nations.

The study was carried out by Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, and surveyed European attitudes to Muslim migration in the UK, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Poland, Italy, Hungary, France, Austria, and Spain. The 10,000 people surveyed were asked whether they agreed with the statement, “All further migration from mainly Muslim countries should be stopped”.

Apart from Spain (41 per cent) and the UK (47 per cent), a majority in every country wanted a ban on Muslim immigrants. Across all countries, an average of 20 per cent disagreed with the statement, and in no country did the percentage that disagreed surpass 32 per cent.

Turkish AK Party Deputy threatens to “shoot” Greece over Islet dispute

Turkish AK Party Deputy threatens to “shoot” Greece over Islet dispute:

Tensions are again on the rise in the Aegean Sea, where Greece is increasingly confronted by belligerent language from Turkey asserting its claim over some little rocks sticking out of the Mediterranean. A Member of Parliament of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) yesterday even threatened with violence in retaliation for “games” allegedly played by Athens.

“I am warning Greece: You were saved owing to a cowardly [Turkish] admiral in 1996. Do not play the Kardak game with us. We will shoot you!,” tweeted Hüseyin Kocab?y?k, the AKP deputy from the city of Izmir. Some 21 years ago the two countries almost went to war over the islets, located some seven kilometres from the Turkish peninsula of Bodrum. They are called Imia in Greek and Kardak in Turkish.

Greek Authorities Probing Three Migrant Deaths On Island Camp:

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek authorities are investigating the deaths of three migrants over the past week in a camp on the eastern Aegean Sea island of Lesbos.

Two of the men, an Egyptian and a Syrian national, were found dead in their tents in the Moria camp last week. A third migrant, a Pakistani, died in his tent Monday.

Initial indications suggest they were poisoned by fumes from stoves lit inside the tents to counter bitter winter conditions.

Greece Is In Trouble Again: Bonds, Stocks Plunge As Bailout Talks Collapse; IMF Sees “Explosive” Debt:

It may – or may not – shock readers to learn that Greece is once again on the verge of collapse.

10-year bond yields shot up and stocks tumbled on Friday, a day after euro zone finance ministers acknowledged the country’s fiscal progress but once again failed to break an impasse with the IMF over the country’s future bailout targets. Early on Friday morning, the greatest Greek nemesis alive, and surely in the afterlife, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said that Greece’s creditors won’t unlock further financial aid to the country unless the government meets its reform promises, which he said it hasn’t done yet.

Greece: Hospitals Have Become “Danger Zones”

In 7th Year Of Austerity, Greek Hospitals Have Become “Danger Zones”:

It is not a secret and it is not new that public hospitals in Greece collapsed. As Keep TalkingGreece.com notes, the first budget cuts imposed with the first bailout agreement affected the public health. Seven years later, the situation goes from bad to worse in fast speed. The austerity freezing of hiring (1:7) ended up in severe shortages in medical and paramedical personnel. The sharp expenditure cuts deprive hospitals of spare parts and essential material. KTG reported many times in the past about the situation in Greece’s hospitals, the deficiencies in personnel and material, incl bed sheets, the never ending bureaucracy.

Now doctors and workers at the public hospitals mention a new phenomenon: the increasing risk of death due to inner-hospital infections.

Speaking to UK’s Guardian about the Greek public health meltdown, doctors and personnel say that hospitals have become “danger zones”.

Europe “Infuriated” By Greek Decision To Give Impoverished Pensioners A Christmas Bonus:

On Wednesday, Greek yields surged when it emerged that diplomatic relations between Greece and the Eurogroup had broken down once again, after European finance ministers suspended negotiations over granting short-term debt relief to Greece as a result of pledges by embattled Greek PM Tsipras unexpectedly said he would grant low-income pensioners a pre-Christmas payoff by spending €600 million to the nation’s 1 million low-income pensioners, to replace a Christmas bonus scrapped by the Greek bailout supervisors.

Lawyer Confirms Maria L. Murder Suspect Was Convicted of Attempted Murder in Greece:

A Greek lawyer has identified the suspected murderer of Maria L. as having been in Greece in 2013 and confirmed that the man had claimed to have been between 16 and 17 at the time.

Greek lawyer Maria-Eleni Nikolopoulou has confirmed the allegations made by two asylum seekers who told German press that the murderer of Maria Ladenburger had been convicted of attempted murder in Greece in 2014, reports Donau Kurier.

In 2013, Afghan migrant Hussein K. attempted to rob a woman and then threw her from a cliff on the coast of the island of Corfu. During the trial, which took place in 2014, Hussein K. said that he was 17; two years later, after being arrested for the murder of Maria Ladenburger, he is claiming again that he is still 17 years old.

Migrant Opened Fire on Police During Routine Check Before Shooting Self:

A migrant stopped for a routine check by police in Athens opened fire on officers, wounding one before apparently turning the gun on himself.

The man was questioned by a motorcycle patrol, who asked to see his papers. Instead he opened fire, striking one officer in the shoulder before fleeing as the officers returned fire.

He was found dead a short while later with a gunshot wound to the head, which was reportedly self inflicted, the Daily Mail has reported.

Athens Police have refused to reveal whether he was fatally wounded by the police officers’ returning fire.

Turkey Accused of ‘Dissolving’ Camps as Migrants Flood Greece

Turkey Accused of ‘Dissolving’ Camps as Migrants Flood Greece:

Hundreds of migrants arriving on the Greek island of Lesbos have claimed that they came from a “dissolved” migrant camp in north-west Turkey, and Greek port authorities allege the Turkish coastguard that monitors the Aegean Sea border has “disappeared”.

On Friday 200 migrants, mostly originating from Africa, travelled across the Aegean Sea and landed on the eastern Greek island of Lesbos. In addition, the European Union (EU) border agency Frontex picked up 66 migrants off the coast of Chios. On Saturday morning, a further 330 arrived on the both islands.

EU To Allow Countries To Start Returning Migrants To Greece In March

EU To Allow Countries To Start Returning Migrants To Greece In March:

European member states will be able to return migrants to Greece from mid-March 2017, the European Commission has announced, in a bid to unpick recent changes to the bloc’s migration rules.

Under European Union (EU) rules, the first country of entry is responsible for processing the asylum claims of migrants arriving within its borders. But unable to cope with the scale of the migrant crisis last year, Greece simply allowed migrants to pass through.

As more than a million migrants swept northwards internal borders were rapidly closed, effectively trapping the later arrivals in Greece.

The Greek islands are already struggling to accommodate twice as many migrants as they have the capacity for, leading to human rights agencies to warn that the country will not to be able to cope with returnees.

Infinite Unknown had a global Alexa Rank of  just above 100,000 (for a while) and even below that (quite a while ago).

A webmaster told me (when it became apparent that the numbers were dropping fast) that Alexa had changed its rating methods, which in his opinion clearly disfavors websites like I.U.

You can look up I.U.’s global ranking here:

The only way we can make up for all this censorship coming our way is if readers would start hitting that social media buttons like crazy.

Maybe that would also bring more attention to the website, which could possibly result in more financial support for my work, which is much, much needed.

Greece Is Not India? Hellenic Banks Plan “Tax On Cash Withdrawals” To Combat Black Economy

Greece Is Not India? Hellenic Banks Plan “Tax On Cash Withdrawals” To Combat Black Economy:

Greek banks have proposed a series of measures to combat tax evasion, strengthen the electronic transactions and limit the use of cash in the economy, and as KeepTalkingGreece.com reports, one of the measures proposed is a special tax on cash withdrawals.

Bankers reportedly stress that cash money can easily and largely be channeled in the black economy. Therefore, a tax on cash withdrawals will drastically reduce cash transactions and by extension the black economy.

Border Staff Flee Greek Island After Migrants Riot

Border Staff Flee Greek Island After Migrants Riot:

European border officials are being pulled out of Greek islands over concerns for their safety, following a spate of riots and violence by migrants.

Since March, migrants arriving on the Greek islands have been prevented from moving on to the mainland as the European Union (EU) hopes to return at least some of them to Turkey.

But due to growing frustrated at the delay, the migrants have taken to burning down their accommodation and rioting, the Daily Mail has reported.

As a result, Belgium has taken the decision to withdraw its staff from the islands, fearing for their safety.

Migrant Camp Attacked in Greece (VIDEO)

VIDEO: Migrant Camp Attacked in Greece:

(REUTERS) – Tensions were high on the Greek island of Chios on Friday after unknown individuals hurled rocks and petrol bombs at a makeshift camp for refugees and migrants, setting facilities on fire, police sources and aid organisations said.

It was the second night running of incidents at the facility, a makeshift camp run by the local municipality of the Aegean island. There were incidents on Wednesday when individuals let off fireworks from the camp and outsiders threw stones into the camp.

“Both incidents together have destroyed the places to sleep for some 100 men women and children. Today there was a third incident where …. stones were thrown and one Syrian man was seriously injured to his head and had to be hospitalised,” said Roland Schoenbauer, spokesman for UNHCR Greece.
