Brazil — At the tail end of September, the findings from the most exhaustive study of tropical forests’ link to carbon emissions were published — and the conclusion was alarming.

Researchers found that the world’s tropical forests have become so degraded that they no longer act as an overall reducer of carbon dioxide. Rather, they function as a source.

“The forest is not doing what we thought it was doing,” Alessandro Baccini, one of the lead authors of the research team from Woods Hole Research Center and Boston University, told The Guardian.

The Spanish public prosecutor on Thursday ordered the country’s High Court that the Catalonian secessionist leaders be jailed. An arrest warrant be issued for ousted Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and eight members of his former government. 

Investigative magistrate Carmen Lamela issued the ruling on Thursday at the request of prosecutors who are pursuing a criminal case stemming from the declaration of secession the Parliament of Catalonia made Friday. The eight are Oriol Junqueras (Deputy First Minister, economy), Jordi Turull (spokesman), Raul Romeva (foreign affairs), Josep Rull (territory), Meritxell Borrás (public administration), Carles Mundó (justice), Dolors Bassa (work & social affairs), Joaquin Form (interior).

Earlier, the prosecutor’s office requested the jailing of Catalonian Vice-President Oriol Junqueras and seven other officials charged with rebellion, sedition and embezzlement of public funds, while the probe is ongoing, La Vanguardia reported.  The prosecutor also asked the judge to issue a European arrest warrant for former leader Carles Puigdemont while also requesting that counselor Santi Vila, who resigned from government before Catalonia declared independence, be released on bail of €50,000.

The latest in a growing number of Israeli airstrikes against Syrian territory appears to have been one of the most ambitious yet, striking deep into the Homs Province, near the Lebanese border and destroying what was said to be a weapons depot for the Syrian military.

The attack destroyed the site, and provoked retaliatory fire from Syrian air defense, who fired a number of surface-to-air missiles at the Israeli warplanes. Israeli officials say none of their planes were hit in the incident.

On Tuesday the whole Orwellian cycle of American non-deployment to non-wars (by our politicians’ standards) was on display during a single Pentagon press briefing, when Army spokesman Maj. Gen. James B. Jarrard told reporters that 4,000 US troops were deployed to Syria, but then awkwardly attempted to walk back the statement less than 30 seconds later:

German police officers in the city of Halle were attacked by a gang of “youths” on Halloween night, and police in Cologne were forced to call for reinforcements due to sex attacks and violence from young migrant men.

In Cologne, police had to call for reinforcements after drunken men, described as North Africans and Arabs, gathered near the site of the infamous Cologne New Year’s Eve sex attacks.

Police say that there were “numerous brawls and disputes” and “three women were sexually harassed”, with two men being arrested in connection with the sex attacks, reports German news magazine Focus.

Diseases caused by pollution killed 16 percent of the world’s population in 2015 – an estimated nine million premature deaths – according to a report by The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health.

Health sciences professor Bruce Lanphear of Simon Fraser University authored the report detailing the commission’s findings on the adverse health effects of pollution on a global scale, as featured in Science Daily.

“This is the first global analysis of the impacts of pollution – air, water, soil, occupational – together as well as exploring the economic costs and the social injustice of pollution,” according to Lanphear. “Pollution, which is at the root of many diseases and disorders that plague humankind, is entirely preventable.”

Now, according to Reuters, we learn that a total of just over $1 million was paid to Fusion GPS for their “opposition research,” of which $168,000 was sent to British spy Christopher Steele.

A Washington research firm paid a former British spy’s company $168,000 for work on a dossier outlining Russian financial and personal links to Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign, the U.S. firm said in a statement on Wednesday.

A Vienna school director has warned that migrants are dragging down the school system and will likely create a “lost generation”, but authorities have tried to silence her.

Andrea Walach, the director of a Vienna school, said that migrant children are having an increasingly hard time learning German. She warned that because of their lack of language skills, young migrant children may be unemployable in the future and that the state would likely have to care for them their entire adult lives, according to TheLocal.at.

Describing the migrant students, she said that most of the children could only speak in fragments of sentences, could barely read, write or even count. She reckoned that at least a third of the children would end up on government assistance after their schooling.

The number of asylum seekers and refugees in Germany has more than doubled in two years according to the latest figures from the Federal Statistics Office, but the nation is struggling to keep track of all the new arrivals.

At the end of 2016 the number of people seeking asylum had hit 1.6 million, a rise of 113 per cent compared to the end of 2014. The figure is likely to have risen even further since.

German newspaper Handelsblatt reports the breakdown of the 1.6 million figure, with 872,000 holding a “humanitarian residence permit”, and 158,000 in the country despite having had their asylum applications rejected. Of those, 75 per cent were given a “tolerance” — suspending the requirement for them to leave the country.

A report from the German Federal Statistical Office claims the amount of money spent on asylum seekers increased last year by 73 per cent, with the government spending a total of  €9.23 billion on migrants.

The money was assigned to various people and projects under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act and totals all the money paid by the federal, state, and local governments in the country. In 2015, the number was close to €5.2 billion, Die Welt reports.

Corey Feldman has apparently taken Matt Laur’s advice and has decided to reveal the name of one of six Hollywood figures who molested him during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

During an apperance on the Dr. Oz show, he disclosed that the actor in question is none other than John Grissom.

The “Goonies” actor named Grissom just moments before calling law enforcement officials to report the allegations.
