Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has denied media reports claiming he requested US Special Forces assistance in the battle for Marawi City, saying on Sunday that he “never approached America” for help.
“I am not aware of that until they arrived,” Duterte said when discussing the latest developments in Marawi City.

The siege in the Philippines has escalated after eight civilians were found in a ravine shot dead by militants linked to Islamic State.

Rebel gunmen stopped the civilians, believed to be carpenters, as they tried to escape the violence in Marawi City, according to police.

They were killed because they could not cite verses of the Quran, Marawi police officer Jamail C Mangadang said.

(INTELLIHUB) — The Philippine city of Marawi is currently under siege by Islamic State forces and militants have raised their flag over the city as government soldiers, police, and members of the general public fight to their death.

ISIS militants have abducted a Catholic priest and scores of churchgoers as they swept the city burning and destroying almost everything in their path.

The police chief was beheaded by Islamic extremists after being stopped at a checkpoint.

 

In response to the siege, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law in the southern Mindanao region for the next 60-days as the battle is expected to intensify.
