It seems everyone today has a story about @FabianoCaruana. Here’s mine. We drew when he was 15; I wasn’t that impressed. After the game I asked what he wanted to do in the future. He looked at me like I was an idiot and replied “Chess player.” I laughed. Guess who’s laughing now?

Chess: Baadur Jobava Gives Boris Savchenko A Lesson In Minor Piece Play (Video)

n Round 5 of the 2014 Bronstein Memorial chess tournament Baadur Jobava (white) of Georgia was paired against Boris Savchenko (black) of Russia. Jobava, one of the most original chess players today, gives up the exchange very early and sets Savchenko many problems to solve. Note how the development for white is smooth with all white minor pieces eventually stepping foot in the enemy camp, whereas black has to make awkward moves to simply try and complete development. The computer evaluation tells us the position is roughly equal, but what it doesn’t tell you is that the game is much easier to play for white. There is value in that!

Chess: David Navara vs Radoslaw Wojtaszek – Is this the King of all King Walks? (Video)

This game was from the 48th Biel Chess Festival of 2015. Czech Grandmaster David Navara played as white against against Polish Grandmaster Radoslaw Wojtaszek. Out of a Sicilian Defense, Najdorf, English Attack, we observe an early queen exchange and an imbalance via structure and minor piece. This game could have very easily been ‘swept under the rug’ with an early repetition of position, but Navara had a deeply calculated tightrope walk in mind instead. I’ve seen many king walks, and this one might just be the king of them all.
