In 1977, Gunderson took his last position as Senior Special Agent-in-Charge of the Los Angeles division, and retired in March 1979. Gunderson was honored as The Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer in America, by the AFL-CIO Metal Trade Counsel Los Angeles, CA in 1977.
