No wonder investors don’t take economists seriously. Or if they do, they shouldn’t. Since Richard Nixon interrupted Hoss and Little Joe on a Sunday night in August 1971, it’s been one boom and bust after another. But don’t tell that to the latest Nobel Prize co-winner, Eugene Fama, the founder of the efficient-market hypothesis.

The efficient-market hypothesis asserts that financial markets are “informationally efficient,” claiming one cannot consistently achieve returns in excess of average market returns on a risk-adjusted basis.

“Fama’s research at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s showed how incredibly difficult it is to beat the market, and how incredibly difficult it is to predict how share prices will develop in a day’s or a week’s time,” said Peter Englund, secretary of the committee that awards the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. “That shows that there is no point for the common person to get involved in share analysis. It’s much better to invest in a broadly composed portfolio of shares.”

Peace is more than simply the absence of war; it is the active creation of something better. Alfred Nobel recognized this when he created alongside those for chemistry, literature, medicine and physics, an annual prize for outstanding contributions in peace. Nobel’s foresight is a reminder to us all that peace must be created, maintained, and advanced, and it is indeed possible for one individual to have an extraordinary impact. For this year’s prize, I have chosen to nominate US Army Pfc Bradley Manning, for I can think of no one more deserving. His incredible disclosure of secret documents to Wikileaks helped end the Iraq War, and may have helped prevent further conflicts elsewhere.

The announcement of Obama’s recognition by the Nobel Peace Prize committee in 2009 seemed, to many, more like an ‘Onion-worthy’ headline than reality but now, as The Associated Press reports, it seems the officials face a formal inquiry over the selection criteria that could rescind the last three years’ awards. The accusations at the root of the inquiry stem from persistent complaints by a Norwegian peace researcher that cites the original purpose of the prize was to diminish the role of military power in international relations, and if the Stockholm County Administrative Board, the overseer of such foundations, finds that the founder Alfred Noble’s will is not being honored then (while unlikely) Obama (2009), Liu Xiaobo (2010), and last year’s Liberians could face their awards suspended as ‘champions of peace’. Fredrik Heffermehl, the inquiry’s instigator, rhetorically asks when addressing the 2009 committee choice of Obama for “extraordinary efforts” to boost international diplomacy: “Do you see Obama as a promoter of abolishing the military as a tool of international affairs?” as he notes the 1895 will of Nobel to “work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) — Nobel Peace Prize officials were facing a formal inquiry over accusations they have drifted away from the prize’s original selection criteria by choosing such winners as President Barack Obama, as the nomination deadline for the 2012 awards closed Wednesday. The investigation comes after persistent complaints by a Norwegian peace researcher that the original purpose of the prize was to diminish the role of military power in international relations.

If the Stockholm County Administrative Board, which supervises foundations in Sweden’s capital, finds that prize founder Alfred Nobel’s will is not being honored, it has the authority to suspend award decisions going back three years — though that would be unlikely and unprecedented, said Mikael Wiman, a legal expert working for the county.

In a move that is sure to send the infamous Fed “economist” (Ph.D., never forget) Kartik Athreya over the edge, Obama’s nominee for the Fed Board, after unsuccessfully trying to enter the one circle that is just less exclusive than the Goldman partnership ranks for over a year, has decided to pen an Op-Ed in the NYT titled “When a Nobel Prize Isn’t Enough”, and disgusted with the fact that his utterly worthless Nobel prize in something or another can’t even buy him one seat with those who decide the price of money, has pulled his nomination in utter disgust. “Last October, I won the Nobel Prize in economics for my work on unemployment and the labor market. But I am unqualified to serve on the board of the Federal Reserve — at least according to the Republican senators who have blocked my nomination. How can this be? ” How indeed: could it be that, gasp, Nobel awards are merely a honorary award in groupthink, presented to anyone who perpetuates the status quo with little regard for actual merit-based contribution (one needs only recall Obama’s Peace prize just as the President is contemplating opening up a 4th, or is that 5th, war front?). War President Obama honored for peace: Obama’s tricky moment

“War is Peace.” Change we can believe in!

WASHINGTON – He’s the Nobel Peace Prize winner who just ordered 30,000 more troops to war. He’s the laureate who says he doesn’t deserve the award. He’s not quite 11 months on the job and already in the company of Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama.

This is President Barack Obama’s Nobel moment, an immense honor shadowed by awkward timing.

When Obama leaves for Oslo, Norway, on Wednesday to be lauded for his style of international diplomacy, he goes knowing that the American people are more concerned about something else: peace of mind.

The economy has left millions of them hurting. The mood of the country is dispirited – more people than not think the nation is going in the wrong direction – and soothing news is tough to find. Unemployment is in double digits even as the bleeding of jobs has slowed.

Meanwhile, there is no hiding the contrast of war and peace.

Oct. 5 (Bloomberg) — Three American scientists won the Nobel Prize in medicine for research on cell division and the “immortality enzyme” that can help cells multiply without damage, illuminating conditions including cancer and aging.

Elizabeth Blackburn, 60, a professor at the University of California in San Francisco; Carol Greider, 48, a professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore; and Jack Szostak, 56, a professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston, will share the 10 million-Swedish kronor ($1.4 million) prize equally, the Nobel Assembly said today in Stockholm. It’s the first time two women have jointly won the prize.

Their research explored a fundamental question of life: how chromosomes that carry the genetic code in DNA are copied in their entirety each time a cell divides. The key is the end of the chromosome, where caps known as telomeres reside. An enzyme discovered by the researchers, dubbed telomerase, prevents the end from being shaved off and maintains the health of the cell as it replicates — earning it the title of “immortality enzyme.”

“This is this really a tribute to curiosity-driven basic science,” Greider said today at a press conference at the Johns Hopkins campus with her two children, ages 9 and 13, in the audience. “We were just interested in the fundamental question of cell biology.”
