Nicholas S. Fisher, ‘Distinguished Professor’ at Stony Brook Univ. — Fukushima Radioactivity in the Pacific and Risks to Marine Life and Humans, Sept. 19, 2013, Published July 15, 2014:
- 5:00 in — It resulted in a release of large quantities of radioactivity into the Pacific Ocean, and ever since has scared the ‘bejesus’ out of everybody in the world. This is quite remarkable, over 2 years later, it’s virtually every day I get calls from reporters and TV and print media and radio from around the world, every day, asking about issues on Fukushima. So it’s still very much on people’s minds, and I’m here to… hopefully comfort some concerns or anxieties you might have about Fukushima.
- 8:45 in — There was all of a sudden, a tremendous — orders of magnitude higher, of cesium-137 from Fukushima — orders of magnitude higher. People use terms like ‘orders of magnitude’ — they’re very flippant about it, and they think nothing of it. Just to give you an idea… Two orders of magnitude is you’re walking speed and a jet plane flying overhead. An order of magnitude is a big deal; this is many orders of magnitude greater release of cesium-137 from Fukushima.
- (Part 2) 12:30 in — PHOTO CAPTION: “Still a work in progress… stay tuned.” It is still leaking and we don’t know what the radioactivity is now. We just completed a couple cruises off Japan, so we’re analyzing fish from there. And we also collected Bluefin tuna that arrived in California.
- (Part 2) 13:45 in – It’s clearly detectable in tuna in California coastal waters… below levels that we think would have any discernible effect
- (Part 2) 21:45 in — Sure enough every single fish without exception was radioactive. Every single one. They were all like clones of each other… all the same [levels of radioactive cesium from Fukushima].
- (Part 2) 24:00 in — Q: Are you concerned at all about the bio-accumulation over time? A: Yes. We focus a lot on that. We focus on the trophic transfer from one trophic load to another.
Bio-accumulation of Fukushima’s radioactive contamination is a recognized concern, however, little is mentioned about accumulation of Fukushima’s radioactive contamination. Recall this statement from Hidehiko Nishiyama of Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency: “Contaminated water leaked from the Unit 2 may have gathered as a lump and drifted offshore. We need to continue monitoring it.”
Don’t worry Obama is monitoring it. Just wish I knew what golf course he does that from…
