– Angela Merkel tells Germans frightened by migrant crisis ‘just approach refugees’:
ANGELA Merkel has warned Germans afraid of the number of migrants in the country to “just approach refugees”.
The German Chancellor, who has come under fire for her open door immigration policy, offered her advice to Germans concerned over the migrant crisis.Members of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) confronted Mrs Merkel asking how she will reassure the public over integrating migrants. The group represented the Reutlingen branch of the CDU.
In July this year a machete-wielding Syrian refugee hacked a pregnant woman to death in the German city of Reutlingen. The 21-year-old killer also wounded two other people before a BMW ran him over in the street at about 3.30pm. Angela Merkel told the group: “Just approach refugees, so that reservations disappear.
“This could also broaden your horizons.”
Once again she defended her controversial policy that has seen more than one million migrants have entered Germany since the start of 2015.During a video conference, one viewer told Mrs Merkel he was afraid for the safety and future of his children following a spate of crime involving migrants. Mrs Merkel told the viewer nothing could be changed about her reaction to the migrant crisis and insisted her police was the correct decision, despite major opposition.
She said: “I take your fear seriously and also your criticism.”We have to live with the dissent.” The German Chancellor appeared to take her own advice when meeting a young Afghan boy called Edris during a regional conference of her conservative party.
Speaking in German, Edris, said: “I would like to thank you, Mrs Merkel. I am very, very happy.”The CDU leader praised the child for “learning a lot of German already” and went over to shake his hand. The German Chancellor’s defiant stance came just days after she announced plans to deport 100,000 migrants who arrived in Germany last year as she backtracked on her open door policy.
Mrs Merkel said authorities would significantly step up the rate of forced returns as support for the far-right surges and her popularity plummets. She told German MPs last week: “The most important thing in the coming months is repatriation, repatriation and once more, repatriation.”
