RiaNovosti reports defense minister Sergei Shoigu saying Russia plans “to expand permanent military presence outside its borders by placing military bases in a number of foreign countries,” including Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, the Seychelles, and Singapore. “The talks are under way, and we are close to signing the relevant documents,” Shoigu told reporters in Moscow.
Russia is planning to expand its permanent military presence outside its borders by placing military bases in a number of foreign countries, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday.
Shoigu said the list includes Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, the Seychelles, Singapore and several other countries.
“The talks are under way, and we are close to signing the relevant documents,” Shoigu told reporters in Moscow.
The minister added that the negotiations cover not only military bases but also visits to ports in such countries on favorable conditions as well as the opening of refueling sites for Russian strategic bombers on patrol.
Moscow currently has only one naval base outside the former Soviet Union – in Tartus, Syria, but the fate of this naval facility is uncertain because of the ongoing civil war in that country.
Post-Soviet Russia closed a large naval base in Vietnam and a radar base in Cuba in 2002 due to financial constraints.
However, Russia has started reviving its navy and strategic aviation since mid-2000s, seeing them as a tool to project the Russian image abroad and to protect its national interests around the globe.
Now, Moscow needs to place such military assets in strategically important regions of the world to make them work effectively toward the goal of expanding Russia’s global influence.
Putin is going to rebuild Russia to its former greatness…..or he think he will. The people will follow him because Russians usually do, and this will enrich the greedy corporations even more. That means wealth for the few at the cost of the many.
The world is sick of the US bullying, and has forgotten how dreadful either nation can be in an arms race. An arms race will enrich these greedy corporations and impoverish everyone else.
But, a lot has changed. Both nations are in deep financial trouble. Neither one is building a thing to enrich themselves…….greedy guts rule Russia, too.
Putin has found an opening, the world is sick of US bullying, and nations that used to fear Russia, now they fear the US. This time, there are no good alternatives, many countries are struggling to survive.
Also, there is a new factor that was not present in the past arms race: China. China is a huge unknown, but their debt level is very high. I have read anything from 5-12X their real GDP.
China has taken creative accounting to new levels, some even more so than Enron……….the world is far less stable than it was in the 1950s-1980s.
Also, there are rising sea levels and the problem of Fukushima. Fukushima isn’t a 20 year from now problem, it is 3 years old, and continues to pour huge amounts of poisons and radioactive chemicals into our air, water, soil and food crops. Nothing is being done to stop it because nobody knows how to stop it. I am no scientist, but I am sure the raging heat from Fukushima that will kill a person in 7 minutes and melt a robot in less than two hours is contributing to the climate change we now suffer.
So, the plan is to take the world and divide it up into two or three major corporations………it will fail, but millions will die and suffer while they chase the wrong goal.
Greed is like being addicted to alcohol or drugs….you can never get enough. For a junkie on the streets, so be it, but when they are running your country………..God help us all.
