Supreme Court Overturns Roe V. Wade; Capitol Police Don Riot Gear:

  • Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, returning the decision on abortion rights to individual states
  • Congressional Democrats vow to “enshrine Roe v. Wade into law”
  • Attorney General Garland vows to ‘protect reproductive freedom’
  • Biden calls for peaceful protests
  • Capitol Police assemble in riot gear near the Supreme Court

Update (1312ET) Following Friday’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe vs. Wade, which returns the matter of abortion rights to individual states, lawmakers acted about as expected – with Congressional Democrats vowing to legislate Roe into law, and Republicans celebrating the win.

President Biden said on Friday that the ‘health and life of women in this nation are now at risk,’ and has called for peaceful protests in the wake of the decision.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said that he “strongly disagrees” with the decision, and said it “will have an immediate and irreversible impact on the lives of people across the country,” particularly people of color and poor people. “But today’s decision does not eliminate the ability of states to keep abortion legal within their borders. And the Constitution continues to restrict states’ authority to ban reproductive services provided outside their borders,” Garland continued.
