‘Should I eat it?’ Tragic last words of larrikin footy player, 19, who became a quadriplegic after eating a slug as a dare at a party- as his friends say he still licks his lips for a beer when they come over to hang out:

  • In 2010 Sydney rugby player Sam Ballard swallowed a slug at a friend’s party
  • Sam fell ill and was told by doctors he had been infected with rat lungworm
  • He was left as a quadriplegic, needs full time care and feeds through a tube
  • Sam’s friends have stuck by him, and continue to visit and watch footy
  • They say he is still the same underneath his illness, and tries to drink their beers
  • His mother Katie says she doesn’t blame her son or friends for what happened
