A primary school who refused to celebrate ‘Mother’s Day’ in an effort to be ‘inclusive’ has backflipped on its decision after a call from opposition leader Bill Shorten.
Moonee Ponds West Primary School, in Melbourne, shocked parents last week when it announced in a school newsletter it would ‘not be holding a Mother’s Day’ in 2017.
The decision to instead celebrate ‘International Day of Families’ not only stopped any use of the phrase ‘Mother’s Day’, but also ended the tradition of a stall, where school children spend their pocket money on a gift for mum.
However the school is believed to have reversed its decision after Mr Shorten, who is the local member, called principal Jeff Lyons directly to voice his concerns.
