U.S. Soldiers Not Getting Paid, Left Broke

Special Report: How the Pentagon’s payroll quagmire traps America’s soldiers (Reuters, July 9, 2013):

As Christmas 2011 approached, U.S. Army medic Shawn Aiken was once again locked in desperate battle with a formidable foe. Not insurgents in Iraq, or Taliban fighters in Afghanistan – enemies he had already encountered with distinguished bravery.

This time, he was up against the U.S. Defense Department.

Aiken, then 30 years old, was in his second month of physical and psychological reconstruction at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, after two tours of combat duty had left him shattered. His war-related afflictions included traumatic brain injury, severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), abnormal eye movements due to nerve damage, chronic pain, and a hip injury.

But the problem that loomed largest that holiday season was different. Aiken had no money. The Defense Department was withholding big chunks of his pay. It had started that October, when he received $2,337.56, instead of his normal monthly take-home pay of about $3,300. He quickly raised the issue with staff. It only got worse. For all of December, his pay came to $117.99.

All Aiken knew was that the Defense Department was taking back money it claimed he owed. Beyond that, “they couldn’t even tell me what the debts were from,” he says.

At the time, Aiken was living off base with his fiancee, Monica, and her toddler daughter, while sharing custody of his two children with his ex-wife. As their money dwindled, the couple began hitting church-run food pantries. Aiken took out an Army Emergency Relief Loan to cover expenses of their December move into a new apartment. At Christmas, Operation Santa Claus provided the family with presents – one for each child, per the charity’s rules.

Eventually, they began pawning their possessions – jewelry, games, an iPhone, and even the medic bag Aiken used when saving lives in Afghanistan. The couple was desperate from “just not knowing where food’s going to come from,” he says. “They just hit one button and they take your whole paycheck away. And then you have to fight to get the money back.”

A Soldier’s Last Words: “I Feel No More Pain, I am Free”

“My body has become nothing but a cage, a source of pain and constant problems. The illness I have has caused me pain that not even the strongest medicines could dull, and there is no cure. All day, every day a screaming agony in every nerve ending in my body. It is nothing short of torture. My mind is a wasteland, filled with visions of incredible horror, unceasing depression, and crippling anxiety, even with all of the medications the doctors dare give. Simple things that everyone else takes for granted are nearly impossible for me. I can not laugh or cry. I can barely leave the house. I derive no pleasure from any activity. Everything simply comes down to passing time until I can sleep again. Now, to sleep forever seems to be the most merciful thing.

You must not blame yourself. The simple truth is this: During my first deployment, I was made to participate in things, the enormity of which is hard to describe. War crimes, crimes against humanity. Though I did not participate willingly, and made what I thought was my best effort to stop these events, there are some things that a person simply can not come back from. I take some pride in that, actually, as to move on in life after being part of such a thing would be the mark of a sociopath in my mind. These things go far beyond what most are even aware of.

To force me to do these things and then participate in the ensuing coverup is more than any government has the right to demand. Then, the same government has turned around and abandoned me. They offer no help, and actively block the pursuit of gaining outside help via their corrupt agents at the DEA. Any blame rests with them.

Is it any wonder then that the latest figures show 22 veterans killing themselves each day? That is more veterans than children killed at Sandy Hook, every single day. Where are the huge policy initiatives? Why isn’t the president standing with those families at the state of the union? Perhaps because we were not killed by a single lunatic, but rather by his own system of dehumanization, neglect, and indifference.

It leaves us to where all we have to look forward to is constant pain, misery, poverty, and dishonor. I assure you that, when the numbers do finally drop, it will merely be because those who were pushed the farthest are all already dead.

And for what? Bush’s religious lunacy? Cheney’s ever growing fortune and that of his corporate friends? Is this what we destroy lives for?”

– Iraq Veteran Daniel Somers’ final words before taking his life

“I Feel No More Pain, I am Free”: A Soldier’s Last Words (Liberty Blitzkrieg, June 24, 2013):

The above are excerpts from Daniel Somers’ final letter to his family before committing suicide on June 10, 2013.  The depth, thoughtfulness and pain inherent in this man’s words elicit a sense of anger and sadness that knocked me over emotionally.  RIP Daniel Somers.

Full letter below courtesy of Gawker:

“I Am Sorry That It Has Come to This”:  A Soldiers Last Words

Daniel Somers was a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was part of Task Force Lightning, an intelligence unit. In 2004-2005, he was mainly assigned to a Tactical Human-Intelligence Team (THT) in Baghdad, Iraq, where he ran more than 400 combat missions as a machine gunner in the turret of a Humvee, interviewed countless Iraqis ranging from concerned citizens to community leaders and and government officials, and interrogated dozens of insurgents and terrorist suspects. In 2006-2007, Daniel worked with Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) through his former unit in Mosul where he ran the Northern Iraq Intelligence Center. His official role was as a senior analyst for the Levant (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, and part of Turkey). Daniel suffered greatly from PTSD and had been diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and several other war-related conditions. On June 10, 2013, Daniel wrote the following letter to his family before taking his life. Daniel was 30 years old. His wife and family have given permission to publish it.

I am sorry that it has come to this.

22 US War Veterans Commit Suicide Every Day

A new study finds that 22 US war veterans commit suicide everyday.

Suicide among US veterans 22 per day, 3 times national rate: Report (PressTV, Feb 1, 2013):

A new official US study says that nearly 22 war veterans of the country commit suicide per day, an estimate that is almost 20 percent higher than the 2007 rate suggested by government’s Department of Veteran Affairs (VA).

The two-year study, performed by a VA researcher, further suggests that two-thirds of the veterans who kill themselves are 50 year old or older, indicating that the surge in the suicide rate among US veterans is not chiefly shaped by soldiers that recently fought in the US-led war in Iraq and Afghanistan, The Washington Post reports on Friday.

Former Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle shot dead at Texas gun range (Guardian, Feb 3, 2013):

A former Navy Seal who went on to write a bestselling book chronicling his life as the US’s most prolific marksman has been shot dead at a gun range in Texas.

Police said Sunday that the body of Chris Kyle was found by officers responding to an incident at the Rough Creek Lodge in Glen Rose the previous evening. Chad Littlefield, a 35-year-old friend of the war veteran and author, was also killed at the scene.

In a statement, Sergeant Lonny Haschel said Eddie Ray Routh, 25, of Lancaster, had been charged with two counts of murder in relation to the double shooting. The alleged gunman was found at his home just hours after the shooting, having earlier fled the gun range in a pick-up truck, it is claimed.

America’s 75 Economic Numbers From 2012 That Are Almost Too Crazy To Believe

‘Unimaginable number of veterans homeless’ (PressTV, Dec 30, 2012):

American military veterans who have returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are homeless in “almost unimaginable numbers,” says Gordon Duff, senior editor at Veterans Today.

American veterans are returning to the United States “where our economy is in total shambles, where we have massive unemployment in the non-veteran work force,” he in a phone interview on Saturday.

“Despite our lowered unemployment figures, a large percentage of those are people that are no longer even bothering to look for work because there is no work in the U.S.,” he added.

Judge Napolitano On New Legislation That Could Bar Impaired Veterans From Owning Guns (Video)

Impaired Veterans Could Be Barred From Owning Guns If New Legislation Goes Through (FOX News, Dec 4, 2012):

The question at the center of a new legal debate is, should the Second Amendment right of veterans be taken away? It’s being asked as a sticky issue in the Defense Bill is being tackled about whether or not vets should be allowed to carry guns.

Judge Andrew Napolitano calls it a natural right and one that should be protected. “It’s not a gift from the government,” he said. “You don’t need a permission slip to defend yourself.”

This legislation would permit bureaucrats in the V.A. to make an evaluation as to whether or not a vet is competent to keep and bear arms. “This is not power we repose into the hands of bureaucrats,” Napolitano said.

This latest legislation, he suggested, is an example of those who oppose gun rights using whatever leverage they can to impinge on those rights.

Ted Turner Repeats Call For Population Curb (Video):

Billionaire Globalist Ted Turner, who earlier this month predicted that global warming would eventually lead to cannibalism, has repeated his call to curb population growth, claiming that disappearing farmland will cause food riots, despite the fact that Turner himself is behind the push to grow corn-based ethanol, an industry the UN has blamed for food shortages and increased poverty.

Ted Turner Apologizes For Saying It’s “Good” U.S. Soldiers Are Committing Suicide (Prison Planet, Oct 26, 2012):

After Infowars broke the story of Ted Turner commenting that it was “good” U.S. troops are killing themselves during an appearance on CNN, the issue went viral and Turner was last night forced to apologize for making the remarks.

YouTube

Turner’s comments on Piers Morgan Tonight a few days ago had gone virtually unnoticed until we highlighted them in a You Tube video. The story was then picked up by Breitbart and the Drudge Report and has since gone viral, appearing in Fox News, the Front Page Magazine, the Hollywood Reporter and numerous other outlets.

Had the story not gone viral, Turner’s offensive remarks would have gone unchecked but last night he was forced to issue a public apology.

During my recent interview on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, I inadvertently used the word “good” when asked for my thoughts on the increasing rate of suicide among U.S. military soldiers in the Middle East. It was certainly not my intent to imply that suicide is “good.” Rather, I was implying that it is good that the public is more aware of these tragedies and is more averse to war and war-related fatalities.

My message has always been one of peace, I believe that we’re born programmed to love and help each other, not to kill or hurt each other. I strongly support our U.S. troops and would never intentionally say anything to harm the brave men and women serving our country. I deeply apologize for any misunderstanding caused by this comment.

However, as we highlighted yesterday, Turner’s advocacy for “peace” and “love” doesn’t extend to the billions of people he wants to see wiped off the planet as part of a huge population reduction effort, nor to the millions of babies he would have killed under the global one child policy he advocates.

To Those Veterans Who Don’t Want To Die (Veterans Today)

To those Veterans who don’t want to die (Veterans Today, Oct 4, 2012):

To those Veterans who don’t want their fate replicated on more of their fellow Americans

A neutral pestering his parents to get ?him married when reminded by ?his friends that ?he doesn’t have ‘It’ retorted, ‘Why, my brother has it!’(How does one address this gender – Mr. Miss, Ms. or shall we simply say (?) until resolved?)

Anyway, that is the story of (?) Netanyahu. That is what ?he has been pleading ?himself and through Israel’s American lobbyists (both Jewish and Christian Zionists) with President Obama, and with the world leaders at UNGA the other day.

Lots of people who matter in Israeli politics including President Shimon Peres, Opposition leader Shaul Mofaz, former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, highest ranking former and current defense and intelligence officers (as well from USA) and half of Israeli population have repeatedly told (?) Netanyahu that Israel doesn’t have ‘It’ to launch an attack on Iran.

Now, it seems some one has told Netanyahu ‘Your brother is not feeling woozy but has already gone into syncope with exhaustion after playing for you on two earlier occasions.’ That possibly explains why Netanyahu allowed United States time until “next spring or summer” to recover and feel fit for another orgy!

Credit goes to Iran for rightly estimating Netanyahu’s gender problem, all through calling Israeli threats nothing more than “psyops,” intended to force ‘brother’ USA say: OK, We will again do it for you.

‘Department of Veterans Affairs Is Sorting Through A Backlog Of More Than 860,000 Disability Claims From American Veterans’ (CNN)

Hundreds of thousands of war vets still waiting for health benefits (CNN, Sep 30, 2012):

Mike Rioux can’t go to the grocery store without making a list, even for a single item.

He can’t drive without gripping the steering wheel so hard his knuckles turn white. And he can’t stand any longer than 30 minutes because of severe back pain.

This is Rioux’s life after Afghanistan, where firefights and a roadside bomb blast left him with a traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

His ears still ring from the explosions. He suffers from vertigo, headaches, insomnia and nightmares. He has terrible anxiety, evident in an interview with CNN — Rioux could hardly sit still, and his memory loss and inability to concentrate meant questions had to be repeated at times.

“I need to discover who I am again,” he said.

As a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, Rioux most recently was deployed in 2010 to one of the most dangerous spots in Afghanistan. There he survived firefights and blasts and witnessed much carnage in Paktia province, near the volatile Afghan-Pakistan border.

After returning home, Rioux faced a much different battle, one that neither he nor his wife, Maggie, expected.

Confusion is ‘monumental’

The Department of Veterans Affairs said it is on track to process 1 million disability claims this year.

With the war in Iraq over and the one in Afghanistan winding down, the VA is sorting through a backlog of more than 860,000 disability claims from American veterans. More than a quarter of those vets — 228,000 — have been waiting for a year or more.

Police Quiz Veteran Over ‘Obama F*k Off’ Message Painted In Large Letters On His Truck

FYI.

??Police quiz veteran, 55, over ‘Obama F*k Off’ message painted in large letters on his truck – but he insists it means Fundamentally Useless Kenyan (Daily Mail, Aug 28, 2012):

The extreme methods used by a U.S. Army veteran to convey his political views have been called into question after he painted the words ‘Obama Fuk Off’ on the side of his truck.

Dennis Paul Hamm, 55, of Union Grove, Wisconsin, was quizzed by police after complaints called his message unsuitable ‘for kids in the area’, according to the Racine County Sheriff’s report.

But the unapologetic conservative insisted that rather than misspell the expletive without the ‘c’, the letters were intended as an acronym for ‘Fundamentally Useless Kenyan’, referring to the belief held by many far right-wingers, that the President is not in fact American.

US Government Ran Chemical Experiments On Military Veterans Under Operations MKUltra, Bluebird And Artichoke

US government ran chemical experiments on military veterans under operations MKUltra, Bluebird and Artichoke (Natural News, July 26, 2012):

The United States, for its warts, has achieved much in its short 230-plus year history. It is a benevolent world superpower, for the most part, that serves as a beacon of hope and freedom for an increasingly oppressed world, even as it serves as a guardian against tyranny for as many as half of the world’s nearly seven billion people.

But a few chapters in our history – slavery, oppression of the Native American tribes, causes of the civil rights movement, and moments of unconstitutionality on the part of our elected leaders – serve as more than simple blemishes on an otherwise admirable record of defending liberty and freedom. One such stain is the way we’ve treated some of our nation’s military veterans.

The maltreatment is summed up in a recent federal case. In late July, a group of veterans managed to win a court order forcing the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to hand over a trove of documents detailing the department’s alleged Cold War-era drug experiments on Vietnam vets. What’s problematic about this case isn’t the decision – the VA owes these veterans any answers they are seeking – but the fact that the case had to be filed at all.

U.S. Department Of Veterans Affairs Must Disclose Veteran Drug Test Documents

VA Must Disclose Veteran Drug Test Documents (Courthouse News Service, July 23, 2012):

(CN) – Veterans won another court order requiring the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to hand over more documents about its Cold War-era drug experiments on thousands of Vietnam veterans.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley in Oakland, Calif., said the documents requested were “squarely relevant” to the claim that the government failed to adequately notify veterans of the chemicals they were exposed to and what that exposure might do to their health.

The Army and the CIA, with the help of Nazi scientists, used at least 7,800 veterans as human guinea pigs for testing the effects of up to 400 types of drugs and chemicals, including mescaline, LSD, amphetamines, barbituates, mustard gas and nerve agents, the Vietnam Veterans of America and individual soldiers claim in a 2009 class action.

The government covered up the true nature of its experiments, which began in the 1950s under code names such as “Bluebird,” “Artichoke” and “MKUltra.”

In “Project Paperclip,” the Army and CIA allegedly recruited Nazi scientists to help test various psychochemicals and develop a new truth serum using its own veterans as test subjects.

“Over half of these Nazi recruits had been members of the SS or Nazi Party,” according to the class action. “The ‘Paperclip’ name was chosen because so many of the employment applications were clipped to immigration papers.”

Veterans say the government was trying to develop and test substances that could trigger mind control, confusion, euphoria, altered personality, unconsciousness, physical paralysis, illogical thinking and mania, among other effects.

Record 45% Of Iraq And Afghanistan Veterans Have Filed For Disability

Record 45% of Iraq and Afghanistan vets have filed for disability (The Raw Story, May 28, 2012):

According to a new report from the Associated Press, a record 45% of the 1.6 million veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are seeking compensation for service-related injuries.

This is more than double the rate for Gulf War veterans. For all the publicity given to “Gulf War syndrome,” only an estimated 21% of the veterans of that conflict have filed disability claims.

The recent applicants are also citing a much larger number of ailments than veterans of previous wars — an average of eight or nine per person, which has shot up over the past year to 11 to 14. This compares to less than four for Vietnam War veterans who are currently receiving compensation, and just two for veterans of World War II and Korea.

The causes of the increase, and to what extent it simply reflects the poor economy, are not clear. “Government officials and some veterans’ advocates say that veterans who might have been able to work with certain disabilities may be more inclined to seek benefits now because they lost jobs or can’t find any,” the AP explains.

Much of the change, however, is clearly the legitimate result of more soldiers surving life-threatening injuries, along with an increased incidence of concussions and severe hearing loss resulting from IED blasts.

Even the heavy body armor that helps save lives can often leave soldiers with back, shoulder, and knee problems that sometimes require orthopedic surgery. In addition, 400,000 veterans have already been treated for mental health problems, most often post-traumatic stress disorder, and these have been exacerbated by multiple deployments.

Iraq, Afghanistan Veterans To Hand Back Medals At NATO Summit

Iraq, Afghanistan vets to hand back medals at NATO summit (USA Today, May 16, 2012):

Thirty to 50 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars may have fought hard for or suffered for their medals, but this weekend, they plan to hand those medals back during the NATO summit in Chicago, MSNBC reports.

The group will stage the demonstration in protest of the war on terror, according to the itinerary for Sunday published on the blog Iraq Veterans Against the War.

The group will convene at 10 a.m. for music and speeches and at 3 p.m. march to the convention center where the NATO meeting will take place to return the medals, according to the intinerary.

If they are unable to hand their medals to NATO officials, they will toss them toward the convention center, MSNBC reports.

“We, Afghanistan and Iraq veterans from around the country will converge in Chicago on May 20 to ceremoniously return our medals to NATO generals,” according to the blog. “We were awarded these medals for serving in the Global War on Terror, a war based on lies and failed policies. This endless war has killed hundreds of thousands, stripped the humanity of all involved, and drained our communities of trillions of dollars, diverting funds from schools, clinics, libraries, and other public goods.”

Federal Agents Demand Customer Lists From Mormon Food Storage Facility

Update:

Update: News channel 5 confirms door-to-door questioning of food supplies in Tennessee while canneries downplay initial reports:

The change in this first-hand account has many people scratching their heads, as this story was confirmed face-to-face by none other than Oath Keepers Tennessee Chapter President Sgt. Rand Cardwell, a USMC veteran (Desert Storm) with a solid reputation. There is virtually no possibility that Sgt. Rand Cardwell invented this story, as he is widely known to be a trustworthy individual who honorably served his country as a U.S. Marine.

A far more likely explanation may be found in the Patriot Act itself, which features a sneak-and-peek with a gag order provision that allows federal agents to conduct searches of any facility and then gag the witnesses from speaking about it for at least one year, after which they may challenge the gag order. The existence of this sneak-and-peek gag order is widely acknowledged and easily verified through common web searches. Even NPR reported on it several years ago: http://www.npr.org/news/specials/pa…

Oath Keepers Alert: Federal Agents Demand Customer Lists From Mormon Food Storage Facility (Oath Keepers, Dec. 8, 2011):

Oath Keepers has learned that federal agents recently visited a Latter Day Saints (Mormon) Church food storage cannery in Tennessee, demanding customer lists, wanting to know the identity of Americans who are purchasing food storage from the Mormons.

This incident was confirmed, in person, by Oath Keepers Tennessee Chapter President, Rand Cardwell. Here is Rand’s report:

“A fellow veteran contacted me concerning a new and disturbing development. He had been utilizing a Mormon cannery near his home to purchase bulk food supplies. The man that manages the facility relayed to him that federal agents had visited the facility and demanded a list of individuals that had been purchasing bulk food. The manager informed the agents that the facility kept no such records and that all transactions were conducted on a cash-and-carry basis. The agents pressed for any record of personal checks, credit card transactions, etc., but the manager could provide no such record. The agents appeared to become very agitated and after several minutes of questioning finally left with no information. I contacted the manager and personally confirmed this information.

A compilation of videos I have collected from veterans over the last five months. As veterans we have a duty to let the American people to let them know that we overwhelmingly support the candidate of peace and the champion of The Constitution. Dr. Paul is The Constitutional candidate for veterans; his foreign policy most closely resembles the policies of our founding fathers. His ideals of non-interventionism and America first foreign policy is the strategy recommended by Thomas Jefferson in his inaugural speech where he said “”Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations-entangling alliances with none.” Dr. Paul is also the most likely to respect what The Constitution outlines as the president’s authority in dictating how our military is used. That the president can cannot wage war without a declaration from congress. Paul has proven himself to be a man of peace during his 23 years on Capitol Hill. As veterans we know that anytime he called upon us to perform our duties it would be in a Constitutional manner. He would never ask us to break our oath or put us in a position where it is unclear where our loyalty should lie as we have for the last 10 years. As a veteran himself he understands the words of Douglas MacArthur “The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.” Dr. Paul has spoken very directly on his intentions if he were to be elected president. He would call for an immediate cease fire in the illegal and unconstitutional wars that we are currently involved with in with at least five different countries and withdraw our soldiers from areas such as Korea where we have been guarding their border for 50 years. This would significantly decrease the amount of blowback we receive as a nation in the form of terrorist attacks, give us the manpower and logistics to defend our own borders, and strengthen our nation economically by eliminating unnecessary deficit spending.
