WASHINGTON (AFP) – The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded 100,000 dollars each on Wednesday to scientists in 22 countries including funding for a Japanese proposal to turn mosquitos into “flying syringes” delivering vaccines.
The charitable foundation created by the founder of software giant Microsoft said in a statement that the grants were designed to “explore bold and largely unproven ways to improve global health.”
The grants were awarded for research into preventing or curing infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis and limiting the emergence of drug resistance.
They are the first round of funding for the Gates Foundation’s “Grand Challenges Explorations,” a five-year 100-million-dollar initiative to “promote innovative ideas in global health.”
A single dose of Gardasil costs $162, and a complete vaccination requires three doses.

Buenos Aires, Jul 10, 2008 — At least 12 babies who were part of a clinical study to test the effectiveness of a vaccine against pneumonia have died over the past year in Argentina, the local press reported Thursday.
The study was sponsored by global drug giant GlaxoSmithKline and uses children from poor families, who are “pressured and forced into signing consent forms,” the Argentine Federation of Health Professionals, or Fesprosa, said.
“This occurs without any type of state control” and “does not comply with minimum ethical requirements,” Fesprosa said.
The vaccine trial is still ongoing despite the denunciations, and those in charge of the study were cited by the Critica newspaper as saying that the procedures are being carried out in a lawful manner.
Colombian and Panama were also chosen by GSK as staging grounds for trials of the vaccine against the pneumococcal bacteria.
Since 2007, 15,000 children under the age of one from the Argentine provinces of Mendoza, San Juan and Santiago del Estero have been included in the research protocol, a statement of what the study is trying to achieve.
“Only 12 have died throughout the country, which is a very low figure if we compare it with the deaths produced by respiratory illnesses caused by the pneumococcal bacteria,” pediatrician Enrique Smith, one of the lead investigators, said.
Almost 8,000 U.S. recipients of the vaccine used to protect against cervical cancer have reported adverse reactions, ranging from pain at the injection site to serious side-effects, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A total of 7,802 people who received Gardasil, made by Merck and Co. Inc., have reported adverse events to the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) between June 8, 2006, and April 30, 2008. The United States distributed 2.2 million doses of the vaccine in 2006 and 11.3 million in 2007.
Of the people who reported adverse reactions, the most common side-effect was pain at the injection site, according to a recent CDC report.
Seven per cent had serious side-effects – “about half” the average of vaccines overall, according to the report. There were 31 reported cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a neurological condition that results in temporary but often total body paralysis, with 10 cases confirmed.
Fifteen deaths were also reported, with 10 of these containing the level of information required for further analysis, according to the CDC.

Amalgam dental fillings – which contain the highly toxic metal mercury – pose a health risk, the world’s top medical regulatory agency has conceded.
After years of insisting the fillings are safe, the US government’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a health warning about them. It represents a landmark victory for campaigners, who say the fillings are responsible for a range of ailments, including heart conditions and Alzheimer’s disease.
Earlier this month, in an unprecedented U-turn, the FDA dropped much of its reassuring language on the fillings from its website, substituting: “Dental amalgams contain mercury, which may have neurotoxic effects on the nervous systems of developing children and foetuses.” It adds that when amalgam fillings are “placed in teeth or removed they release mercury vapour”, and that the same thing happens when chewing.
The FDA is now reviewing its rules and may end up restricting or banning the use of the metal.
(NaturalNews) The European Medicines Agency (EMEA) has reported that two young women died shortly after receiving Merck’s Gardasil, a vaccine against several varieties of human papillomavirus (HPV).
Gardasil and Glaxo SmithKline’s Cervarix protect against the two strains of HPV that are responsible for 70 percent of cervical cancer cases. Gardasil also protects against two HPV strains that cause 90 percent of genital warts.
The EMEA did not release the names or ages of the women who died, and said the cause of death was still unknown. It described their deaths as “sudden and unexpected.”
“In both cases, the cause of death could not be identified. No causal relationship has been established between the deaths of the young women and the administration of Gardasil,” the agency said.
The recent deaths mark the fourth and fifth to occur shortly following vaccination with Gardasil and the first in Europe. Previously, three young women, aged 12, 19 and 22, died in the United States within days after receiving a Gardasil shot. In addition, 1,700 cases have been reported of patients suffering non-lethal adverse reactions.
Health officials believe that adverse effects of medication are widely underreported.
New Zealand scientists claim to have developed a “flatulence inoculation” aimed at cutting down on the massive amount of methane produced by its sheep and cows.
Such animals are believed to be responsible for more than half of the country’s greenhouse gases, causing huge environmental problems.
But Phil Goff, New Zealand’s trade minister, told an Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) in Paris yesterday that a solution was in sight.
“Our agricultural research organisation just last week was able to map the genome … that causes methane in ruminant animals and we believe we can vaccinate against” flatulent emissions, Mr Goff said.
Scientists in New Zealand have been working around-the-clock to reduce emissions from agriculture, such as changing the way fertilisers are used on pasture land, Mr Goff added.
Sheep, cattle, goats and deer produce large quantities of gas through belching and flatulence, as their multiple stomachs digest grass.
Ruminants are responsible for about 25 per cent of the methane produced in Britain, but in countries with a large agricultural sector, the proportion is much higher.
The 45 million sheep and 10 million cattle in New Zealand burped and farted about 90 percent of that country’s methane emissions, according to government figures.

There has been an astronomical rise in autism over the past several decades that have coincided with the increased amount of preservatives that the pharmaceutical companies have included in these vaccines. The bill was introduced at the request of Richard Daines who is the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health. There should be an immediate investigation to determine if this man is on the payroll of the pharmaceutical companies for requesting the introduction of such ridiculous legislation. No doubt, the companies that make these questionable products will benefit greatly if all children in the state of New York are required to take these vaccines. It really doesn’t matter if the intention of this legislation is good or bad, this bill will be incredibly beneficial to the big pharmaceutical companies. The corporations aside, forcing parents to have their children injected with vaccines so they can attend the government brainwashing camps is not freedom.
Here is a summary of some of the horrifying revelations that are in this particular bill.
Section 7 of the bill makes it easier for the government to forcibly inject residents and employees of care facilities with vaccines.
Section 10 of the bill requires meningococcal vaccinations for students in the seventh grade.
Section 11 of the bill requires college students to take the meningococcal vaccine.
Section 13 of the bill makes a series of vaccinations mandatory for students entering the seventh grade.
Section 15 and 16 of this bill requires that children be injected with a series of vaccinations that are approved and recommended by the U.S. Public Health Services of which the CDC falls under.
Section 17 allows physicians to forcibly inject minors with vaccines that supposedly prevent STD’s without parental consent.
This is not freedom folks. The government has no right to mandate that all children must take vaccines just to attend their brainwashing camps. This is another system of control and it must be resisted. There is too much evidence to indicate that these vaccines are not safe and making them mandatory is disgusting. The study revealed that the infant monkeys developed autism like signs and symptoms from taking the same vaccines that are commonly injected into children.
To conclude, this bill is completely insane and there’s little doubt considering the documentation and anecdotal evidence linking these vaccines with autism, that this is part of a dark eugenics driven agenda. Just like in the novel Brave New World, the establishment seeks to dumb down the masses by forcibly injecting our children with tainted vaccines and by making them take a series of psychotropic drugs by intentionally mis-diagnosing normal behavior using junk science. They also use the government brainwashing camps and mass media mind control apparatus to train our children how to think by feeding them all sorts of lies and ridiculous propaganda. A pending New York State Assembly Bill dubbed, the “worst vaccine bill ever” by one activist group, would see all vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) made mandatory for all children, including infants and toddlers.
Assembly Bill 10942, introduced at the request of Richard Daines, the Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, calls for changes to the law in order to make recommended inoculation compulsory in order for children to attend school.
The bill would also permit the administration of vaccines for sexually transmitted infections to minors without parental consent.
Separate sections of the bill would come into effect next year with others becoming law in 2010.
A-CHAMP, a national, non-partisan political action organization formed by parents in support of children with neurodevelopmental and communication disorders, has called for rejection of the bill and is demanding the passage of A5468/S3031, a bill that would give individuals a right to a philosophical exemption from vaccine mandates.
The group’s press release highlights the key points in the bill:
Our elected New York representatives would no longer determine the mandatory schedule of vaccines to attend school; decisions made by the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices would automatically become mandatory.
All children, infants and toddlers included, in New York would be required to get all vaccines recommended by the ACIP according to the ACIP schedule
All children in New York up to age 18 would be required to get annual flu shots.
All girls in New York would be required to get a human papilloma virus shot.
All junior high school children and college students would be required to get meningococcal shots.
Doctors would be required to issue certificates for every shot given and parents would be required to maintain the records and provide them to school and other authorities.
The rules committee claims that the new laws would have no fiscal impact on the state despite the necessity of the state to spend tens of millions on purchasing new vaccines, a vast increase in mandatory record keeping and enforcement for schools, and a huge increase that could be expected in the number of cases of neurological damage, Guillian Barré syndrome and other vaccine-caused injuries.
Besides certain laws that apply only to government medical specialists – there is no law that enforces the mandatory use of any vaccine in the United States. Waiver forms for personal or religious exemptions are freely available. Enforced medical treatment is an assault and a violation of the 14th amendment.
However, some lawmakers seem determined to ignore the Constitution and to make some vaccinations (usually the most profitable ones) mandatory.
There has recently been a spate of cases where officials, with the assistance of directed media propaganda, have attempted to cajole parents into believing that laws require vaccination.
In February 2006 one such media hoax fooled parents in Texas and other areas of the country into believing that the HPV vaccine, which experts have slammed as untested and has continued to be linked to dangerous side-effects, is now required by law and that young girls must take it. Merck Pharmaceuticals hit the headlines after it was revealed that the company was set to capitalize on this fraud by making obscene profits from a crony deal with Governor Rick Perry, while children were put at risk.
Last November we reported on a case in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where parents of more than 1600 children were told they could be put in jail for failing to get their kids vaccinated. At the time a local Fox News affiliate reported, “A new law was passed last year requiring children from 5th through to 10th grade to have the vaccine,” which was a total lie.
The non-complying parents were not charged not under vaccination laws (because there aren’t any) but under truancy, neglect or child in need of supervision laws, which state that the parent is culpable after 30 days of a child’s unexplained absence from school.
The school itself triggered the truancy violation by unfairly kicking the kids out of school, and failing to inform parents about vaccine waiver forms. A state prosecutor involved in the case then admitted that there is no law that mandates any vaccine.
If New York State lawmakers get their way, this could change.
As in the case of all other vaccines, executive orders and court mandates merely state that the vaccine is “recommended,” yet the mass media drumbeat constantly conditions people to believe that if they don’t take their shots they will be kicked out of school, arrested and thrown in jail. This trick will continue to hoodwink Americans into taking all manner of dangerous and untested vaccines, the number of which rises every year, until they realize that there is no law that forces them to take any vaccine.
There is a plethora of examples where vaccines containing mercury, live HIV virus, live cancer and other horrors have wrought misery after victims were bullied into taking them by government mandates that they were deluded into thinking was the law.
The flu vaccine for example, which continues to be manufactured with thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, is recommended for all pregnant women, infants and children despite the fact that the Institute of Medicine in 2001 recommended against the policy of exposing these same sensitive groups to thimerosal containing vaccines.
Studies have shown a direct relationship between mercury in children’s vaccines and autism. Further studies have shown a decline in neurodevelopmental disorders after the removal of thimerosal-containing vaccines. The preservative has been banned or limited in Europe, Japan, England and Russia. Furthermore, there are no reported instances of autism amongst religious groups such as the Amish community and very few instances are reported in the third world.
Autism was a practically unknown affliction some decades back, but now one in every 150 children is affected.
Mercury is the second most toxic metal known to man behind Uranium. Thimerosal is used in vaccines not because it is good for you, but purely because it prevents vaccine contamination. Yet some have questioned why thimerosal is even considered for vaccines because there are obviously safer alternatives to preventing contamination.
Many believe the only reason it is still in vaccines is that it allows substantial savings for pharmaceutical companies. Questions also remain about how those companies conduct vaccine research and how the government regulates them.
Last October President Bush vetoed a bill that would have banned mercury in flu vaccines for children despite the fact that he pledged in 2004 to support such a move when campaigning for re-election.
During Bush’s reelection campaign in 2004 he stated:
“I support the removal of Thimerosal from vaccines on the childhood national vaccine schedule. During a second term as President, I will continue to support increased funding to support a wide variety of research initiatives aimed at seeking definitive causes and/or triggers of autism. It is important to note that while there are many possible theories about causes or triggers of autism, no one material has been definitely included or excluded.”
Despite this he vetoed the bill that would have removed thimerosal, citing “costs”. What costs would these be? Do the costs of big pharmaceutical companies and fat government kickbacks outweigh the costs of the healthy brains of every child in America? Seemingly so.

While the media continues to hype reports that contend the evidence for links between mercury laden vaccines and autism are not concrete, there are scores of studies and testimony from credible figures asserting the exact opposite.
Starting in the early nineties, government regulators dramatically increased the amount of Thimerosal exposure to babies by adding two new vaccines to the roster of mandatory immunizations children must have before enrolling in school. The combination of the Hepatitis B vaccine and the HiB vaccine more than doubled the amount of mercury children.
Mercury expert Dr. Boyd Haley of the University of Kentucky has testified before Congress and the Pentagon as well as the FDA as one of the nation’s leading experts on Thimerosal and mercury poisoning, revealing that his research leads him to believe that some children are genetically predisposed to storing mercury in their brains, leading to neurological disorders, including autism.
The combination of the Hepatitis B vaccine and the HiB vaccine more than doubled the amount of mercury children in the 90s. “If you take a ten-pound baby in, and it gets four shots on that one day, which is a common practice – that’s equivalent to giving a 100-pound person forty shots in one day,” said Haley.
Haley has also proposed that Thimerosal in infant vaccines was also the most likely toxic agent involved in Gulf War syndrome and autistic spectrum disorders. Think about this, they are injecting into babies something that is breaking down the bodies of full grown combat veterans.
While the FDA questioned thimerosal’s safety in the 80s, noting that it was “not safe for ‘over-the-counter’ topical use because of its potential for cell damage”, and while it was removed from animal vaccines for the same reason, the government regulatory committees did nothing to question its use in childhood vaccines.
It’s too dangerous for cats and dogs but the government is happy for our babies to be pumped full of the stuff on a regular basis.
Dr Haley has also pointed out that it is also well known by any good biochemist that thimerosal and aluminum react dangerously when combined together. Given that Aluminum is a compound added to many vaccines as a catalyst you would think the government would have heeded this warning, yet it has still done nothing.
Despite the continued reports doubting the link between Thimerosal and autism, more studies have continued to verify the link. As reported in the Capitol Times last year:
A study done at the University of Washington in 2006 showed that baby primates exposed to injected thimerosal (50 percent mercury), at a rate equal to the 1990s childhood vaccine schedule, retained twice as much inorganic mercury in their brains as primates exposed to equal amounts of ingested methylmercury. We know from autometallographic determination that inorganic mercury present in the brain, following the dealkylation of organic mercury, is the toxic agent responsible for changes in the microglial population and leads to neuroinflammation.
In other words thimerosal, inorganic mercury, leads to neuroinflammatory disease which is proven to be the underlying medical condition of autism.
Furthermore In a study done at the University of Arkansas last year, autistic children were found to have significantly lower levels of the antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione is the major antioxidant needed for the elimination of mercury at the cellular level.
Moreover, Professor Philippe Grandjean, from Harvard University and the University of Southern Denmark, considered the foremost scientific authority on the development of children’s brains, has recently claimed that the average human IQ is plummeting primarily due to IQ points in the population being chemically destroyed via low level mercury exposure in children.
The links between the ingestion of mercury and neurological breakdown are clear and proven. Professors all over the world are telling us outright that it is literally destroying people’s brains. Even if you choose to believe, in the face of all the evidence, that the links are still somewhat questionable, the solution is still obvious. GET IT OUT OF THE VACCINES NOW.
According to the EPA, one in every six women of childbearing age already has blood levels of mercury high enough to cause neurological damage to their unborn children due to environmental exposures alone.

Despite moves to ban mercury in childhood flu vaccines in many states including Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah and Washington, the FDA continues to reject outright bans or new limits on mercury in vaccines. Where such legislation has passed, in New York, California and Iowa it does not constitute a total ban, only a limiting of the preservative and only in children’s vaccines.
Such limitations may be seen as a step in the right direction but many fear irreversible damage has already been done. In addition to the now well documented mercury containing vaccines, a more recent worry has been that a combination vaccines for measles, mumps and rubella, or MMR, also has dangerous side effects and can lead to brain disorders.

Stefan Ferrari got his required vaccines before he was 18 months old. At the time, his parents said, he was a healthy, verbal boy.
But after his last round of booster shots, Stefan stopped speaking and, now 10 years old, he has not spoken since.
Stefan’s parents, Marcelo and Carolyn Ferrari of Atlanta, filed suit, alleging the vaccines caused neurological damage to their young son. On Tuesday, the family’s lawyer asked the Georgia Supreme Court to let the case against two vaccine manufacturers, Wyeth and GlaxoSmithKline, go forward.
Lawyer Lanny Bridgers told the court it was bad timing when Stefan received his last shots. A year later, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that thimerosal, a preservative used for multi-dose vaccine vials, be removed from childhood vaccines. The Ferraris contend that manufacturers should have made vaccines without thimerosal before Stefan was vaccinated.
But a lawyer arguing on behalf of the manufacturers told the state high court that the suit is barred by the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Compensation Act.
The law says no vaccine maker shall be held liable in a civil action for damages arising from an injury or death caused by vaccines given after Oct. 1, 1988.

How can you come up with such a law if you do not know that cellphone towers are harmful for health?
The only reason for this is like with the law regarding vaccines is to protect the corporations and to continue destroying peoples brains and it is the government that backs it all up. The Hitlers of today are much more sophisticated.

The exceptions are if the vaccine was improperly prepared or contained improper directions or warnings. Neither of these were involved in Stefan’s case, Daniel Thomasch, a lawyer for the manufacturers, told the court.
“It was the clear intent of Congress to pre-empt precisely the claims that are at issue here,” he argued.
Congress passed the law after hundreds of lawsuits were filed against vaccine manufacturers. The litigation increased insurance costs, drove out some manufacturers and threatened the continued production of some vaccines, even though the lawsuits were largely unsuccessful, Thomasch said.
Thousands of babies and toddlers are being given two doses of the MMR jab in three months under “emergency” measures to tackle the biggest outbreak of measles for decades.
The unprecedented step follows a growing epidemic of the potentially fatal disease caused after too few children were given MMR injections.
Around 40 per cent of parents in some areas are shunning MMR, which has faced controversy over suspected links to autism and bowel disease.
In South-East London, doctors have seen a record 226 cases in the first five months of the year – compared with 167 in the area during the whole of 2007.
Experts fear last year’s record of 1,000 infections nationally is certain to be broken, putting children’s health at risk.
Government advisers from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation warn the epidemic could spread across the UK and urgent measures are needed to halt the disease in its tracks.
Minutes from its last meeting said: “The committee expressed its concern about the ongoing measles epidemic in London, and noted that other parts of the country may be vulnerable to similar outbreaks.”
Two doses of MMR close together have been shown to boost protection to almost 100 per cent. But children whose parents shun the jab are still vulnerable.
Campaigners fear that giving two doses of the triple vaccine over a short period could “overload” infants’ immune systems.
But medical experts dismiss this. MMR contains live viruses to provoke an immune response against measles, mumps and rubella.
“However, since then, there have been 1,268 cases of extraordinary behavior reported, of which 85 percent were from teenagers. They reportedly committed suicide by jumping out of buildings or into cars.”
Concerns are rising over side effect of bird flu drug Tamiflu on teenagers.
Tamiflu is Swiss-based Hoffman-La Roche’s antiviral for general influenza A and B but is also used to combat bird flu. However, worries have surfaced about the possibility of the medicine causing mental disorders among teenagers.
With fear of the H5N1 virus sweeping the nation, the government has doubled the quantity of the drug in storage, as it is the most effective treatment against avian influenza.
Whether to prescribe the pills with risks of side-effects such delusions or other disorders is being widely discussed among medical experts.
Although the drug has been the only medicine accredited to be effective against the H5N1 virus strain by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Japanese and Korean governments restricted its being prescribed to teenagers last year.
The Korea Food and Drug Administration announced that the drug should not be prescribed to those between 10 to 19 years old except for emergencies.
According to Roche, there has not been a reported case of side effects here, but the Seoul Shinmun, a local daily, reported that a woman in her 30s said she had nightmares after taking the drug in 2005.

Texas authorities have asked foster care providers to immunize every FLDS child – despite some parents’ concerns about possible negative effects.
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services sent letters to 16 group homes and shelters this week asking them to line up shots for the children. “It appears to be a totally unimmunized population,” said Patrick Crimmins, department spokesman. “We’re the legal parents of the children and we would like for them to be immunized.”
Crimmins said the state requires all children in custody to be immunized for their “health and safety.” He said no one would be forced to get inoculations; older children specifically would have the opportunity to decline the shots.
A Dallas attorney called the demand “outrageous.”
“The truth is [FLDS parents] don’t kow what to do,” said Polly R. O’Toole, who represents one child. “They would prefer to make that decision. But they are afraid to exercise any options out of fear they will be perceived as uncooperative by CPS.”
Rod Parker, a Salt Lake City attorney who has acted as a spokesman for the FLDS, said some children have been immunized but their health records are in Utah. (If they have already been immunized and you do that in a short time interval again that is a huge medical crime. – The Infinite Unknown)
Willie Jessop, an FLDS member and spokesman, said some parents have immunized their children and some have not. “It’s an individual decision,” he said. But the parents “oppose forced mandates of things happening to their children they don’t even know don’t even know about.”

The brains of some of the FDLS children are still intact because they have not been vaccinated. Can’t have that. Let’s put some Mercury, Formaldehyde, Antibiotics and some very dangerous foreign proteins through a vaccine into them that go directly into the brain, especially in children that are under 3 years old, because then the blood-brain barrier that protects the brain from toxins etc. is still OPEN.
And that’s exactly the reason why children are bombarded with vaccinations at a very young age, so that all those substances can go directly into the brain of the child to alter and destroy it when it is the most vulnerable.
If vaccinated with Hepatitis B, which by the way makes no sense at all for children, because Hepatitis B is transmitted through sexual intercourse and blood transfusion, the immune system will not be working properly for years – maybe never – unless you do something about it.
So why would someone want to vaccinate babies with Hepatitis B? The only reason is to destroy their fragile marvelous brain and their developing immune system.
Did you know that you are using just 2% of your brains capacity and also just 2% of your DNA, the rest science calls junk DNA. The Russians have proven that this junk DNA is not junk at all, but rather Superconsciousness DNA. They have found out that the junk DNA understands ALL languages and not only that, but that is another big story.

If your child shows strange behavior, slowed down development, neurological signs or even gets severe ill days up to several months!!! after a vaccination go straightaway not only to a doctor, but maybe even more important to an expert in alternative medicine who can find out if it was caused by the vaccination and which vaccine has caused it. Then give the child the appropriate homeopathic remedy tested by an expert and you will see immediate results.
Also do acupuncture to remove blockages and to restore the free flow of energy in the body. Focus on a good acupuncturist first, before you decide to go somewhere.
(From my own experience: One good treatment can achieve a great improvement almost a miracle, even if ten treatments weeks before by Chinese Doctors were not able to improve the condition at all. But this is not to say that if the first treatment brought no immediate results that the treatment was bad.)
Learn about detoxification methods to detoxify the body from mercury, aluminum and toxins etc.
Do only use natural substances, like blue-green algae (AFA, Spirulina), chlorella (also an algae variety), coriander (cilantro) etc. for that purpose.
Always have the remedies and the dose tested by an expert, because every body reacts different and has different needs. There aren’t many experts out there but you have to find them.

Doctors know some patients needing lifesaving care won’t get it in a flu pandemic or other disaster. The gut-wrenching dilemma will be deciding who to let die.
Now, an influential group of physicians has drafted a grimly specific list of recommendations for which patients wouldn’t be treated. They include the very elderly, seriously hurt trauma victims, severely burned patients and those with severe dementia.
The suggested list was compiled by a task force whose members come from prestigious universities, medical groups, the military and government agencies. They include the Department of Homeland Security, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services.
The proposed guidelines are designed to be a blueprint for hospitals “so that everybody will be thinking in the same way” when pandemic flu or another widespread health care disaster hits, said Dr. Asha Devereaux. She is a critical care specialist in San Diego and lead writer of the task force report.
The idea is to try to make sure that scarce resources – including ventilators, medicine and doctors and nurses – are used in a uniform, objective way, task force members said.
Their recommendations appear in a report appearing Monday in the May edition of Chest, the medical journal of the American College of Chest Physicians.
“If a mass casualty critical care event were to occur tomorrow, many people with clinical conditions that are survivable under usual health care system conditions may have to forgo life-sustaining interventions owing to deficiencies in supply or staffing,” the report states.
To prepare, hospitals should designate a triage team with the Godlike task of deciding who will and who won’t get lifesaving care, the task force wrote. Those out of luck are the people at high risk of death and a slim chance of long-term survival. But the recommendations get much more specific, and include:
– People older than 85.
– Those with severe trauma, which could include critical injuries from car crashes and shootings.
– Severely burned patients older than 60.
– Those with severe mental impairment, which could include advanced Alzheimer’s disease.
– Those with a severe chronic disease, such as advanced heart failure, lung disease or poorly controlled diabetes.
Dr. Kevin Yeskey, director of the preparedness and emergency operations office at the Department of Health and Human Services, was on the task force. He said the report would be among many the agency reviews as part of preparedness efforts.
