Samsung S3 Overtakes iPhone As World’s Best-Selling Smartphone (ZeroHedge, Nov 8, 2012):

Look up the phrase “inflection point” – it will be the most hated phrase by all those who day after day repeat that there is now way AAPL can ever drop because its “forward multiple is low” (hint: forward multiples are simply functions of forward earnings, and once the fadness and coolness of a memo, no matter how infectious in the past, is gone, so are “forward earnings’, especially once the sellside behavioral finance lemmings crew takes the machete to their Price Targets and has to justify why it has been massively wrong… and also for those who have a calculator, calculate how many years of dividends $100 billion in cash funds before the cash hoard also runs out).

From Reuters:

Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S3 became the world’s best-selling smartphone model last quarter, pushing aside Apple Inc’s iPhone, which has dominated the chart for more than two years, research firm Strategy Analytics said on Thursday.

Strategy Analytics estimated Samsung sold 18 million S3 models in the third quarter, compared with iPhone 4S sales of 16.2 million.

Homeland Security ‘Crowd Soft Control’

Incentivizing citizens spying through ‘soft control’ and cell phones (Activist Post, Mar 21, 2012):

Like me, chances are you have probably never heard of the concept of “crowd soft control,” or just “soft control,” for that matter.

“Soft control” is a way to leverage the millions of cell phones owned by Americans across the United States of America in order to assist in massive data gathering – and potentially surveillance – operation; and with 88% of Americans now owning a cell phone, this shouldn’t be all too difficult.

Cell Phones Shown To Negatively Influence Fetal Brains

Cell Phones Shown to Negatively Influence Fetal Brains (Natural Society, Feb. 8, 2012):

Cell phones – the incredibly convenient device that make our lives infinitely easier. While these phones have created great steps forward in communication, talking on them comes at a price. The massive increase in cellular phone use in our current society has resulted in a large degree of research examining the potential negative health effects they have on human health. Very recent research has shown that microwave radiation emitted by cellular devices negatively influence fetal brains.

Cell Phones Shown to Negatively Influence Fetal Brains

The experiment took 32 pregnant rats and divided them into 4 different groups, with one of them receiving no exposure to microwave radiation. The other three groups were exposed to different intensities of microwave radiation from cellular phones, with each of them being subjected for different amounts of time. Group 1 was radiated for 10 minutes each time, group 2 was radiated for 30 minutes, group 3 for 60 minutes, and group 4 not at all. Each of the groups receiving radiation were radiated 3 times a day from the first day of pregnancy then for 20 days thereafter. On day 21, the rats’ brains were tested.

The primary purpose of the study was to evaluate intensity of oxidative stress and the level of neurotransmitters in the brains of pregnant rats exposed to cell phones. The study concluded with:

“Through this study, we concluded that receiving a certain period of microwave radiation from cellular phones during pregnancy has certain harm on fetal rat brains.”

This research comes just before Greek scientists demonstrated how frequency electromagnetic fields, namely cell phones, portable phones, WiFi, and wireless computer equipment alter important protein changes in the brains of animals.

AND NOW: Dr. Smartphone!

Korean research, a first step toward Dr. Smartphone? (Reuters, Jan 23, 2012):

Tired of long waits at the hospital for medical tests? If Korean researchers have their way, your smartphone could one day eliminate that — and perhaps even tell you that you have cancer.

A team of scientists at Korea Advanced Institute of Science of Technology (KAIST) said in a paper published in Angewandte Chemie, a German science journal, that touch screen technology can be used to detect biomolecular matter, much as is done in medical tests.

Assange on mass surveillance: ‘You are all screwed!’

YouTube Added: 02.12.2011

Description:

The whistle-blowing website Wikileaks has begun releasing sensational information on the multi billion dollar global spying industry. The database contains hundreds of documents shining a light on the methods being used by secret services all over the world. Here’s the video of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange speaking to journalists and students at a press conference at City University London in central London on December 1, 2011. Along with a number of other guest speakers, Mr Assange spoke of the Wikileaks ongoing investigation of surveillance software companies and their alleged use by governments around the world.

Wikileaks Julian Assange tells iPhone, Blackberry and Gmail users: “You’re all screwed.” (Mirror, Dec. 1, 2011):

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has warned smartphone and email users: “You’re all screwed”.

The whistle-blowing website has released details of companies it says are selling information obtained by monitoring people’s mobile phones and computers.

According to Mr Assange, more than 150 organisations around the world have the ability to use phones as tracking devices as well as intercept messages and listen to calls.

Those companies then sell the wholesale information, often the telecommunications data of “entire populations”.

He told a press conference at City University in London that the publication of the “Spy Files” is a “mass attack on this mass surveillance industry”.

The 40-year-old asked the audience of students and press: “Who here has an iPhone? Who here has a BlackBerry? Who here uses Gmail?

“Well, you’re all screwed.

“The reality is, intelligence contractors are selling right now to countries across the world mass surveillance systems for all those products.”

Second iPhone Explodes In Less Than A Week

iPhone Explodes: Brazil Incident Is Apple’s Second In Less Than A Week (Huffington Post, Dec. 1, 2011):

For the second time in less than a week, an Apple iPhone 4 has reportedly exploded, this time in Brazil, according to Mashable.

The phone, which was plugged in for an overnight charge, suddenly began sparking and emitting smoke while it was just inches from its owner’s face.

The owner, Brazilian Ayla Paulo Mota told the Portuguese language blog TechTudo that he was not hurt during the incident, despite his close proximity to the phone.

Editors at The Huffington Post U.K. translated Mota’s comments into English:

“At dawn, I woke up seconds before witnessing the burning of my iPhone when I saw a lot of sparks and black smoke out of the cell. My room was full with an unbearable smell of smoke! At that moment, I turned off the power switch in the room to remove the phone from the outlet.”Last week, a similar incident occurred aboard a regional Australian airliner shortly before landing in Sydney. Officials from the airline company Regional Express described the incident as a “mobile phone self combustion” in which an iPhone began to glow red and emit a “significant amount of dense smoke.”

California Appeals Court Approves Cell Phone Searches During Traffic Stops

Calif. Appeals Court Approves Cell Phone Searches During Traffic Stops (The Blaze, Oct. 4, 2011):

In a case explicitly decided to set a precedent, the California Appellate court has determined police officers can rifle through your cellphone during a traffic violation stop.

This is not the first time such a law has been under scrutiny. In April, the Blaze told you about the extraction devices police were using in Michigan to download the entire contents of your phone.

Florida and Georgia are among the states that give no protection to a phone during a search. In particular, Florida law treats a smartphone as a “container” for the purposes of a search, similar to say a cardboard box open on the passenger seat, despite the thousands of personal emails, contacts, and photos a phone can carry stretching back years.

But after initially striking down cell phone snooping, California has now joined the list of states that allow cops to go through your phone without a warrant.

New Japanese Smartphone With Radiation Detection Jacket

#Radiation in Japan: DoCoMo to Introduce Smartphone with Radiation Detection Jacket (EX-SKF, Sep. 25, 2011):

Japan’s DoCoMo is set to introduce a smartphone jacket with radiation detection sensor in the “CEATEC Japan 2011″, an annual high-tech trade show in Japan, at Makuhari Messe in Chiba which will start on October 4, according to Sankei Biz (9/26/2011).

(Just when the government has launched a sort of smear campaign on small, personal survey meters as “inaccurate”…)

Apple’s iPhone and iPod already have an attachment and an application that detects radiation.

According to the Sankei Biz article, DoCoMo’s radiation sensor jacket, that will be attached to the back of a smartphone, will allow not only the radiation detection but also data collection over time and sharing, and mapping.

DoCoMo’s press release says it will detect gamma radiation. It can detect radiation from 0.01 microsievert/hour to 100 millisieverts/hour, according to Asahi Shinbun. No information about the pricing.

Scientists Develop Mobile Phone App That ‘Spots Cancer With 100% Accuracy In ONE HOUR’

Cancer breakthrough: Researchers have developed a smartphone-based system that is up to 100 per cent accurate at telling the difference between benign tumours and their malignant counterparts
Cancer breakthrough: Researchers have developed a smartphone-based system that is up to 100 per cent accurate at telling the difference between benign tumours and their malignant counterparts

A mobile phone that spots cancer – and is more accurate than the techniques routinely used in hospitals – has been developed by scientists.

The smartphone-based system is up to 100 per cent accurate at telling the difference between benign tumours and their malignant counterparts.

It also takes just an hour to make the diagnosis, meaning patients don’t have to spend days or weeks anxiously waiting for test results.

The U.S. researchers said the gadget could ‘transform cancer care’ by also making it easier for doctors to track how well drugs are fighting the disease in a patient’s body.

In initial tests, it was 88 per cent accurate in distinguishing cancerous stomach tumours from benign growths.

Refining the technique boosted accuracy to 100 per cent, the journal Science Translational Medicine reports.

This compares with an average accurate of 84 per cent for the gold standard technique which involves using chemicals that stain cancerous cells and show up under a microscope.

Drawback? Most programmes for smartphones, such as this iPhone, send data back to companies that sold them

Dozens of popular iPhone apps are secretly monitoring users and sending information back to companies – who then use it to target them with adverts.

More than half of the programmes and games for smartphones sent data back to the private companies once they had been downloaded, a study found.

The apps include the wildly popular Angry Birds game and music identifying software Shazam, which comes pre-installed on every iPhone.

Armed with this information firms including Google track the individuals’ movements and sell personalised adverts for which they can make more money than regular ones.

The study found that of 101 apps tested, 56 transmitted the phone’s individual number to a private company in some way, known as the Unique Device Identifier or UDID.

Some 47 sent the phone’s location and five sent age, gender and other personal information.

More data was sent back about a user’s location on the Apple’s iPhone than Google’s Android smartphone, the research discovered, even though both companies have promised not to let such practices take place.

The research was carried out in the U.S. but it would apply to users downloading apps from anywhere in the world.
