Pope Francis has finally said he deeply regrets Chilean priests’ involvement in a series of sex crimes against children.
Upon the start of his visit to Santiago, the capital of Chile, on Tuesday, the pontiff said he felt he was “bound to express my pain and shame,” some seven years after reports emerged that some Chilean pastors had committed sexual abuse against children in their care.

- Six members of child sex gang given sentences between 10 years and 20 years
- Two of the defendants shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ as they were led away from dock
- The gang sexually abused two young Rotherham girls between 1999 and 2001
- One victim fell pregnant aged 12 after being groomed with alcohol and drugs
Members of a Rotherham sex gang today yelled ‘Allahu Akbar’ in court as they were jailed for abusing a girl who fell pregnant aged 12 after being groomed with alcohol.
Six men were given sentences between 10 years and 20 years – and totalling more than 80 years – by a judge who heard details of how two young girls were sexually abused in the South Yorkshire town between 1999 and 2001.
Judge Sarah Wright described how one of the girls was plied with alcohol and drugs and was having sex with a number of men from the age of 11.
The victim, in a statement read to the court, said: ‘There’s evil and truly evil people in the world. I feel my child was the product of pure evil.’
The sentencing marks the end of a series of three major trials after a report on child sexual exploitation in Rotherham revealed that more than 1,400 youngsters had been groomed, trafficked and raped in the town over a 16-year period.
It has led to 18 people being jailed for sentences totalling more than 280 years.

More than 20,000 British men are “interested” in sexually abusing children, UK’s national police chief in charge of child protection has said, having compared the data to the number of suspects posing a terrorist threat.
Some 4,000 men from the UK have been identified as active users of a single online chatroom monitored by investigators in 2017, said Simon Bailey, the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead on child protection. However, there are much more men interested in sexually abusing children, the police official warned, having put the number of such potential offenders at over 20,000. There is a roughly equal number of current and former terrorist suspects, he pointed out.

Some 72,000 referrals of online child sexual abuse imagery were received by the National Crime Agency in the first 11 months of 2017, Bailey revealed. He suggested that children at schools should be warned of the dangers of sexual abuse in the same manner they are advised on how to react if caught up in a terrorist attack.
A 31-year-old paedophile who went on holiday with a 15-year-old girl and her family after grooming her online and convincing them he was a teenager has been jailed for six years.

In the latest case of Hollywood’s spiralling sexual abuse scandal, Variety reports that a veteran 58-year-old Disney executive has been charged with three felony counts of child sexual abuse. Jon Heely, the longtime director of music publishing at Disney, was arrested nearly a month ago and charged with three counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child. One of the reported victims was 15. The other was abused for four years starting at the age of 11, according to the charges.
His attorney Robert Helfend said Heely “vehemently denies these allegations.”
Heely, who oversees the licensing of music from Disney films, pleaded not guilty on Thursday. If convicted, he faces up to nine years and three months in prison according to The Daily News.
