Questioning the idea that gender is a social construct is seemingly a no-no in Swedish feminist circles, as it cost a renowned journalist her participation in a conference.

Swedish journalist Kajsa “Ekis” Ekman was scheduled to participate in a porn-related conference in Gothenburg earlier this week. However, her attendance was canceled after she wrote a text in which she claimed that gender was “biological.”

The conference on the connection of pornography with prostitution was organized by the National Organization for Women’s Shelters (Roks), which asked Ekman for an article about gender.

– Church of England urges Anglican ‘baptism’ service as way to celebrate gender transition:

creation of a new liturgy to celebrate gender transition but urged bishops to use the existing baptism rite as a way to mark the passage.

“On the matter of whether a new service is needed, the House of Bishops has decided that the current service that is used to affirm baptism can be adapted,” Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham James said in a statement issued by The Church of England’s House of Bishops.

What led to this decision?

Last July, the General Synod, the Church of England’s governing body, officially passed a motion welcoming and affirming transgender people into the church. Being LGBT was also declared “not a sin” by a top bishop.

A new study of California youth found that more than one in four teens say their classmates view them as resisting dominant forms of gender expression.

According to a new study out of UCLA, more than a quarter of California adolescents feel comfortable enough to dismiss societal pressures to identify with one gender or another.

Researchers out of the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research analyzed data from the 2015-2016 version of the California Health Interview Survey, which collected data from 1,300 households. For the first time ever, the survey included a question for young people (ages 12-17) about gender expression. Participants had to answer how they thought their classmates viewed them in terms of their appearance, style, dress and/or the way they walk or talk; the answers ranged from “very feminine” to “very masculine.

Exclusive: According to a new survey of people aged 13-34, members of “Generation Z” find the gender binary much less on fleek than millennials.

A new survey of young Americans aged 13 to 20 years old (also known, in marketing-speak, as “Generation Z”) has found that they are far more open-minded and permissive than their older millennial counterparts when it comes to issues of gender and sexuality.

According to a report by trend forecasting agency J. Walter Thompson Innovation Group, only 48 percent of Gen Zs identify as exclusively heterosexual, compared to 65 percent of millennials aged 21 to 34.

On a scale of zero to six, where zero signified “completely straight” and six meant “completely homosexual,” more than a third of the young demographic chose a number between one and five, indicating that they were bisexual to some degree. Only 24 percent of their older counterparts identified this way.

Fifty-six percent of 13-to-20-year-olds said that they knew someone who went by gender neutral pronouns such as “they,” “them,” or “ze,” compared to 43 percent of people aged 28 to 34 years old. Over a third of Gen Z respondents also strongly agreed that gender did not define a person as much as it used to. This figure dropped to 23 percent among millennials who were 28 and up.

Those belonging to Generation Z also rejected the gender binary while shopping—only 44 percent said they always bought clothes designed for their own gender, versus 54 percent of millennials. But they also felt strongly that public spaces should provide access to gender neutral bathrooms, with 70 percent of Gen Zs coming out in support of the move compared to 57 percent of 21–34-year-olds.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has reportedly called for more gender-neutral bathrooms for transgender and “non-binary” citizens in a new city plan.

According to the Guardian, Khan’s plan for London argues that more gender-neutral toilets should be built “in public spaces to help trans and non-binary people feel more comfortable.”

The “public spaces” will include commercial developments, the Guardian reports, as well as “shops, leisure facilities and large public areas that are suitable for all users, including disabled people, older people and families with young children.”
