Iraq Receives First Fighter Jets From “Our Russian Friends”

–  Iraq Receives First Fighter Jets From “Our Russian Friends”  (ZeroHedge, June 30, 2014):

Having offered “complete support” for Iraq’s embattled PM Maliki, the troubled nation receives its first shipment of “America deluded us” Russian fighter jets. As RT reports, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense on Sunday confirmed receiving five Su-25 fighter jets in accordance with the deal with Moscow. Iraqi Army Lieutenant General Anwar Hamad Amen Ahmed explained, “our Russian friends have also sent their own experts to assist us in preparing the aircraft. All the logistics have been planned for as well.” The proxy war continues…

As RT reports,

The first delivery of Russian Sukhoi fighter jets arrived in Iraq on Saturday, the country’s Defense Ministry said. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is hoping the jets will make a key difference in the fight against ISIS.

What We Can Learn From Lawrence of Arabia (Bill Moyers Essay)

Bill Moyers Essay: What We Can Learn From Lawrence of Arabia (Bill Moyers, June 27, 2014):

As fears grow of a widening war across the Middle East, fed by reports that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) envisions a region-wide, all controlling theocracy, we found ourselves talking about another war. The Great War – or World War I, as it would come to be called — was triggered one hundred years ago this month when an assassin shot and killed Austria’s Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. Through a series of tangled alliances and a cascade of misunderstandings and blunders, that single act of violence brought on a bloody catastrophe. More than 37 million people were killed or wounded.

ISIS Declares A Caliphate; Crucifies 9 Syrian Rebels For Being ‘Too Moderate’

–  ISIS Declares A Caliphate; Crucifies 9 Syrian Rebels For Being “Too Moderate” (ZeroHedge, June 29, 2014):

Erstwhile leader of ISIS, Sheikh Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi has declared himself Caliphate, Amir Al-Mu’minin – Leader of Believers, as militants bear down on Baghdad. This comes as the extremist group demands that all Al-Qaeda and Jihadi branches must now pledge allegiance to ISIS.. if not there are consequences as nine rebels have been crucified for being too ‘moderate’ or accused of receiving support from Western powers. We suspect this may slow ‘demand’ for Obama’s latest cunning plan to offer ‘aid’ to only “moderate” terrorists.

ISIS have declared their Caliphate.

The Pentagon Has A Problem: ‘Vetting Moderate Al Qaeda Rebels Can Be Tough’ – So Here Is A Simple Solution … (Humor)

The Pentagon Has A Problem: “Vetting Moderate Al Qaeda Rebels Can Be Tough” – So Here Is A Simple Solution… (ZeroHedge, June 27, 2014):

When we reported yesterday that Obama had submitted yet another $500 million funding request to arm “moderate” Syrian rebels as opposed to extreme al-Qaeda cannibals and other ISIS faithful, we noted the glaring oversight at the heart of this plan when we asked “how will Obama make the distinction? Well, that’s what polling is all about. To wit: “Excuse me, would you describe yourself as a moderate or extreme al-Qaeda jihadist. Answering affirmatively to the former assures you your own US-made Humvee and a few thousand bullets to shoot at US soldiers across the border in Iraq.” Today, none other than the Pentagon’s rear admiral John Kirby confirmed precisely these worries when he said, via Bloomberg:

  • KIRBY SAYS A LOT OF WORK NEEDED TO VET MODERATE SYRIAN REBELS
  • KIRBY SAYS CONCERNED ABOUT AID `ENDING UP IN THE WRONG HANDS’

While we share his sentiment (which we doubt is much of a concern to the US MIC as it will merely provide one set of US-made weapons to destroy another set of US-made weapons) we repeat that there is a very simple solution. It comes from Andy Borowitz, who appears to have read our mind, and is breathtakingly simple.

Iraqi PM Maliki: Russian Jets To Aid The Fight Against ISIS In Iraq

Russian jets to aid the fight against Sunni rebels in Iraq – PM Maliki (RT, June 27, 2014):

Jets from Russia and Belarus will hopefully make a key difference in the fight against ISIS in Iraq, the country’s Prime Minister Nouri Maliki said. He expressed regrets over Iraq’s contract with the US, saying their jets are taking too long to arrive.

“God willing within one week this force will be effective and will destroy the terrorists’ dens,” he told BBC Arabic.

Meanwhile, Maliki criticized the process of purchasing US jets as “long-winded,” adding that the radicals could have been repelled if Iraq had proper air defense.

Obama Asks For $500 Million To Equip Syrian ‘Rebels’ – The ‘Good News’: Obama Will Only Arm Just The ‘Moderate’ Al-Qaeda Forces. So There Is Nothing To Fear.

“As the war in Iraq goes from bad to worse, and as the Obama administration is tired of being humiliated by a bunch of extremist Al Qaeda tribesman, the president is once again pivoting to the place where it all started. It is here where he intends on arming the local Al Qaeda jihadists once again, and will request half a billion dollars from Congress to achieve just that. The good news: Obama will only arm just the “moderate” al Qaeda forces. So there is nothing to fear.”

Obama Asks For $500 Million To Equip Syrian Rebels As The ISIS Juggernaut In Iraq Spreads (ZeroHedge, June 26, 2014):

It is going from bad to worse for the Iraqi government, whose armed forces according to at least one unconfirmed media report, have suffered major losses.

Perhaps confirming this, is the report from Reuters that overnight ISIS continued it southern creep toward Baghdad, and has now reached a town that is just an hour from Baghdad which is home to four natural gas fields on Thursday, “another gain by Sunni insurgents who have swiftly taken large areas to the north and west of the Iraqi capital.”

The overnight offensive included Mansouriyat al-Jabal, home to the gas fields where foreign companies operate, security forces said. The fighting threatens to rupture the country two and a half years after the end of U.S. occupation.

Meanwhile, the Jihadists continue to consolidate their territories not only in the middle of the country but key transit points to Syria where as we reported yesterday, al-Qaeda forces in the two countries merged after ISIS forces and troops from the al Nusra front combined in at least one city. ISIS now control several border posts with Syria and have stolen U.S.-made weapons from Iraqi forces.

Iraqi PM Maliki Confirms Syrian Planes Have Bombed Isis Positions

Maliki confirms Syrian planes have bombed Isis positions (Guardian, June 26, 2014):

Iraq’s prime minister says he welcomes raid on Sunni militants as Iran and US intensify their presence in the country

The Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, said on Thursday that he welcomed a Syrian air strike on Sunni militant positions as it left both countries “winners”.

The Syrian warplanes struck near the border crossing in the town of Qaim on Tuesday, hitting the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis), which seeks to carve out a purist Islamic enclave across the Syria-Iraq border.

ISIS in Iraq: A CIA-NATO “Dirty War” Op? (RT, June 24, 2014):

For days now, since their dramatic June 10 taking of Mosul, Western mainstream media have been filled with horror stories of the military conquests in Iraq of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, with the curious acronym ISIS.

ISIS, as in the ancient Egyptian cult of the goddess of fertility and magic. The media picture being presented adds up less and less.

Details leaking out suggest that ISIS and the major military ‘surge’ in Iraq – and less so in neighboring Syria – is being shaped and controlled out of Langley, Virginia, and other CIA and Pentagon outposts as the next stage in spreading chaos in the world’s second-largest oil state, Iraq, as well as weakening the recent Syrian stabilization efforts.

Baghdad May Lose Its Drinking Water As ISIS Approaches Second Largest Dam

–  Baghdad May Lose Its Drinking Water As ISIS Approaches Second Largest Dam (ZeroHedge, June 25, 2014):

Against a background of having lost control of all western border crossings, Iraqi officials are concerned that ISIS fighters are advancing on the Haditha Dam, the second-largest in Iraq. With militants pouring in from the north, the northeast and the northwest, The NY Times reports, army officers told employees to stay inside and to be prepared to open the dam’s floodgates if ordered to do so. “This will lead to the flooding of the town and villages and will harm you also,” warned one worried employee but this would not be the first time that the Iraqi government and ISIS have engaged in dam warfare, as the closure of the Falluja dam earlier in the year starved areas downstream in the provinces of Najaf and Diwaniya of water needed for crops. The situation is growing more grave as Maliki rejected calls for a caretaker government and has forced Iran’s hand to help. Senator Saxby Chambliss of Georgia noted “the Iranians are playing in a big way in Iraq.”

Earlier today, the Ninewa Division released photographs of its forces seizing control of several bases, displaying captured military hardware, and executing Iraqi soldiers. Then, the Ninewa Division published a set of photographs of a military parade in the city of Mosul. The photographs provide a glimpse of the ISIS’ military strength in Mosul.

AND NOW … Intel Official: Americans Have Joined Militant Group ISIS

Intel Official: Americans Have Joined Militant Group ISIS (CBS News, June 25, 2014):

ERBIL, Iraq (CBS News/CBSDC/AP) — The Sunni militant group in Iraq is a force roughly 3,000 strong and includes some Americans, a senior intelligence official told CBS News on Tuesday.

The majority of fighters in the group, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, are of Iraqi and Syrian origin.

In all, up to 10,000 are fighting with the group, 3,000 in Iraq and another 7,000 in Syria, the intelligence official said. Between 3,000 and 5,000 are foreigners, though how many of those are in Iraq is difficult to assess.

The fighters view Syria and Iraq as one battlefield and have been able to move swiftly inside Iraq with the help of local Sunnis, ties the intelligence official described as more of a “relationship of convenience” than a formal alliance.

The official said the group, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, was well-positioned to keep the territory that it has captured but would be stretched thin if it tried to push south into Baghdad. It has intentions to target U.S. interests, the official said.

John Perkins: Oil Companies Will Use Middle East Crisis To Jack Up Prices (Video)

FYI.

Description:

Financial expert John Perkins has a unique perspective about the unfolding crisis in Iraq. Perkins, a former chief economist who advised the U.S. Treasury Department and the IMF, to name a few, says, “Another force has now stepped up to the stage and that’s the militant Islamic force, and it’s a very strong force. It is a very anti-capitalistic force. So, it is the force going up against the corporatocracy. Even though Russia, China and the United States compete on many levels as they are doing in Ukraine and other places, they have a common enemy, which is this Islamic regime that wants to overthrow the corporatocracy. I am not talking about all Islamic people by any means; I am talking about the radical Islamic militant groups like ISIS that is coming into strength in the Middle East right now.” Perkins goes on to say, “Now, what’s happening suddenly in Iraq, Syria, Iran and the whole Middle East is exploding once again. I think Middle East oil is not nearly as important as a few years ago. There are other alternatives now. Having said that, the oil companies will use what’s going on in the Middle East to jack up prices as high as they think they can.”

As Iraq’s western border falls beyond the control of the country’s government, a new report suggests the United States and Britain were warned of a burgeoning insurgency months before militants began gaining territory.

According to a report by the UK-based Telegraph, senior Kurdish intelligence officials said they tried to explain to their allies in the CIA, MI6, and the central Iraqi government that the members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) could represent a great threat to Iraq’s stability, but that those warnings failed to spark any action.

–  Iraq Update: Air Force Runs Out Of Missiles, ISIS Controls The Border; Shiite Clerics Threaten US Troops (ZeroHedge, June 22, 2014):

Now that the Iraq proxy war scene is set, and as we reported on Friday, Prime Minister Maliki has become a pawn in yet another middle-east war between the west and the petrodollar (with both Saudi Arabia and the US making it clear Maliki has to go) and Russia (with Putin expressing his full support for the prime minister), events will likely unfold at an even faster pace. Sure enough, even this otherwise quiet weekend, in which the world is supposed to put wars on the backburner and focus on the world cup, is chock-full of Iraq news upates. Let’s begin.

Judge Who Sentenced Saddam Hussein To Death Has Been Executed By ISIS, Local Media Reports

Judge Who Sentenced Saddam Hussein To Death Has Been Executed By ISIS, Local Media Reports (ZeroHedge, June 22, 2014):

Back in 2006, after the second US invasion of Iraq culminated if not with the discovery of the WMDs (which were the pretext for the invasion in the first place), but the unearthing (literally) and kangaroo court trial of Saddam Hussein, the US was quick to announce “mission accomplished.” Recent events have made a mockery of that claim, however what is truly the straw that broke the back of poetic justice, to mix metaphors, are reports from local media that as part of its blitz-campaign to take over northern Iraq, ISIS found and the promptly executed Rauf Rashid Abd al-Rahman, the judge who sentenced Saddam to death: a death which to many was the crowning moment of the second US invasion of Iraq, and the confirmation of successful US foreign policy.
