EU tells UK: No trade talks without progress on Irish border:

LONDON (AP) — The European Union warned Britain on Friday that it must outline by next week how it plans to keep an open Irish border after Brexit or the bloc will refuse to start negotiating a new trade deal with the U.K.

Standing alongside European Council President Donald Tusk in Dublin, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the U.K. must offer “credible, concrete and workable solutions that guarantee there will no hard border” between Northern Ireland and the Irish republic after Britain leaves the EU in 2019.

Farmers are calling a fodder crisis …but the government says there is sufficient supply

Farmers are calling a fodder crisis …but the government says there is sufficient supply:

The bad weather throughout the summer has left farmers without sufficient amounts of fodder.

SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS since August have left farmers across Ireland on the verge of a serious fodder crisis.

Farmers usually purchase enough fodder – dried hay or feed given to cattle and livestock – to last until the spring when the grass begins to grow and animals can begin to eat that instead.

However, the unexpectedly cold and wet summer and winter has meant that farmers are running out of hay earlier than usual and grass has not grown enough to meet the needs of the animals in many parts of the country.

Irish premier warns May on her DUP deal, suggesting it could endanger peace

Irish premier warns May on her DUP deal, suggesting it could endanger peace:

Ireland’s Prime Minister Enda Kenny has warned the leader of the British Conservative party, Prime Minister Theresa May, about her deal with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), suggesting it could endanger peace.

Kenny said in a tweet on Sunday that he had talked to the British premier and warned him that the deal could imperil the Good Friday Agreement (GFA).

May reached an outline agreement with the DUP to form an alliance that would allow her to remain in power after the Tory’s weak performance in Thursday’s general elections.

Begging in Dublin Epedemic?

H/t reader squodgy:

“Just visited Dublin, and was astounded at the number of beggars, many from eastern Europe. Literally one every 10 paces around the big shops where construction work was being carried out laying new tram tracks. It seems from the attached blog that professional begging gangs have moved in.

So I started asking individuals about their thoughts on the E.U., recalling that Ireland had a referendum & voted OUT, but EU told them to have another vote until they voted “IN”. So they voted “IN”.

The general theme now is that since the second vote, the EU have funded many big infrastructure projects, to the extent that the employment level (excluding the beggars) …see…

is massaged by EU funded work, none of which is anything but papering over the cracks.

One person’s response was a gem, “We don’t really want the federalism or remote bureaucracy, but now, we’re so fucked, we need the EU more than ever.”
