Annalise Lujan is the latest child suffering from seizures to be treated with the cannabis derivative CBD
A 12-year-old girl with a rare form of epilepsy has stopped suffering from life-threatening seizures after doctors treated her with cannabis oil.
At first, when Kalel Santiago of Puerto Rico survived a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma, his parents, Abiel and Gladys, were overjoyed that the two years of grueling surgery, radiation and chemotherapy treatments had worked, and their little boy was going to be okay. But while he was in the hospital, they started noticing some behavior that disturbed them, like hand flapping and walking on his toes; worst of all, he was totally unable to speak. At the age of 3, little Kalel was diagnosed with severe autism.
Abiel and Gladys gave themselves a crash course on everything related to autism, and were fortunate enough to get Kalel accepted to a special surf-therapy school in their area, where their little boy thrived. Though settled happily in his new school, Kalel was still totally unable to speak.
Cannabis kills brain cells, right? Think again…
It’s true, most of us can think of at least one committed stoner with a memory of a goldfish and a vacant, thousand yard stare. So it may seem counter-intuitive to suggest that the cannabis plant can actually protect the brain and prevent certain neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s from forming.
And yet, even though the US government officially denies any such therapeutic use of cannabis, it has taken out a patent on cannabinoids saying they ‘are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia’.
So, instead of damaging memory it would seem that cannabis could actually do quite the opposite, and even protect against age related memory loss and dementia.
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) – a therapeutic target:
“People need to understand that there are federal laws that the DEA cannot bypass,” a hemp industry professional tells MintPress News regarding CBD oil.
(MPN)Austin, TX — An administrative change by the Drug Enforcement Administration has left users of CBD oil, a popular tincture derived from agricultural hemp, fearful that they could lose access to this vital health remedy.
CBD oil is currently considered legal in all 50 states, and agricultural hemp, a non-psychoactive variety of the cannabis plant from which CBD oil is extracted, is legally grown in many states. While scientific research into its benefits is just beginning, preliminary results show that CBD oil can benefit conditions ranging from epilepsy to chronic pain.
This is just criminal. CBD oil isn’t even psychoactive* but helps many people deal with epilepsy and other debilitating diseases. Truly, this is just disgusting and whoever made this decision should have to look the parents of a child suffering with uncontrollable epilepsy – a child who previously had his or her symptoms under control because of simple CBD – right in the eye and say to them that CBD oil is a bad thing. There is no justification for this action from the Feds. There is no sane reason. It is a horrible decision that will contribute to the suffering of thousands if not millions of Americans.
There should be Congressional hearings around this. How could this possibly have happened? The DEA has too much power. End the War on Drugs.
*In the sense that CBD gets one high anyway.
If this were the 60s or 70s and you told someone you were using cannabis for pain relief or to treat an illness, you might get a funny look. Today, however, countless legitimate medicinal uses have been discovered for the plant. It’s finally receiving positive attention from a society that’s condemned it for nearly a century.
“Regular” people are standing up for cannabis, unafraid of the consequences imposed by an unfair system. Rather than continue to condemn it, people are openly exploring and sharing information about its benefits. Even doctors are speaking out about it.
