AHMEDABAD, India — An 83-year-old Indian holy man who says he has spent seven decades without food or water has astounded a team of military doctors who studied him during a two-week observation period.

Prahlad Jani spent a fortnight in a hospital in the western India state of Gujarat under constant surveillance from a team of 30 medics equipped with cameras and closed circuit television.

During the period, he neither ate nor drank and did not go to the toilet.

“We still do not know how he survives,” neurologist Sudhir Shah told reporters after the end of the experiment. “It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon this is.”

The long-haired and bearded yogi was sealed in a hospital in the city of Ahmedabad in a study initiated by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the state defence and military research institute.

The DRDO hopes that the findings, set to be released in greater detail in several months, could help soldiers survive without food and drink, assist astronauts or even save the lives of people trapped in natural disasters.

“(Jani’s) only contact with any kind of fluid was during gargling and bathing periodically during the period,” G. Ilavazahagan, director of India’s Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), said in a statement.

Jani has since returned to his village near Ambaji in northern Gujarat where he will resume his routine of yoga and meditation. He says that he was blessed by a goddess at a young age, which gave him special powers.

During the 15-day observation, which ended on Thursday, the doctors took scans of Jani’s organs, brain, and blood vessels, as well as doing tests on his heart, lungs and memory capacity.

“The reports were all in the pre-determined safety range through the observation period,” Shah told reporters at a press conference last week.

Other results from DNA analysis, molecular biological studies and tests on his hormones, enzymes, energy metabolism and genes will take months to come through.

“If Jani does not derive energy from food and water, he must be doing that from energy sources around him, sunlight being one,” said Shah.

“As medical practitioners we cannot shut our eyes to possibilities, to a source of energy other than calories.”

  1. Great website, this article is hilarious that this man admittingly is a phenomenon where his consciousness has overrided the body computer and that amazing feat isn’t adored or revered in. No , no , no…. immediately the slave scientists ask ” How can we make soldiers kill longer without food or water!?!?!” The question of , “is limitation an illusion? Is this world what we believe?” Nope, that never enters the arena of questions.. Just, “how can we use this information to more efficiently kill eachother?”. Completely pathetic, the cutting edge of our species… running in circles… they’re “supposed” to be educated or enlightened… nothing more than cavemen-these scientists are throwing away a gift and spitting in it’s face. Congratulations, enjoy the matrix.

  2. 14 days for sure but 70 years without food and especially water is just asking too much. This man must certainly be immortal and reminds me of a certain man called Methuselah.

  3. These people are referred by Hindus as “sithar” or “rishis”. They live many centuturies. Most of the time they go to Samadhi state ( Higher State of meditation) without food and water for weeks, months and years. They dont
live in urban area. They Spent their life time in Forest or Temple.

These may sound stupidity to believe. But they are master of everything and we ordinary men who live for worldly pleasure are stupid.

  4. In an article on this man in the 80s I read he said he resorted to use of a ‘hole’ revealed to him in his head. No doubt refering to the yogic practice of kechari mudra.

  6. We all belive that there is a source of energy to run the world. The Prana shakti which resides in us is itself is a miracle if you belive in it then you will belive in shri Jani’s way of living without food and water, the day will come we will all know the truth…

  7. As Krishna said, I would agree. There is an ‘energy’ that runs the world. It seems most indifferent
to our reasonings for how we treat one another. Rather, allowing for something akin to so-called
    ‘evolutionary principles’.

However, I think it most likely there is a ‘selective’ principle latent within this most indifferent
    principle or impersonal principle.

Well, out of this comes person, and personal likes and affections.

Shall we assume that we ought only adhere to some concept of thinking (intellect) that approves
of personal history or direct inheritance?

Can we not expand feeling and imagination to recognise some remote individuality or kin of consciousness
itself has somewhat different lineages but essentially the same principle at work most inwardly?

At least in the Aryan or Hindoo tradtions, recognition of a wide variety of forms of individual
    lineages of living exists.

No rational being can fault this recognition of variety of lives or ‘species’ of conscious being.

Yet we can fault the hasty conclusion that in some hasty jumping to a conclusion of some ‘ultimate’
personal and SELECTED form of ‘idol’ must needs be taken as probative by anyone else.

This is the fault of all lazy thinkers in any branch of living and self-conscious species of life.

They want to make any form of self-awareness as if universal and ‘final’ and the ‘end’ of all
learning or process of ‘eating’ of knowledge.

This is contradicted, it seems, to direct first-hand experience by anyone. Without any outside
source needed. Curiosity is a native and most primal fact of every form of ‘pup’ or infant of any
    species of life.

The only constant is ability to learn due to inherant consciousness and hunger to know another or others.

These ‘others’, if one wants some generalization, one can only assume have all that one has or any
known ‘one’ has. To designate that any observable one is ‘special’ is simply a form of laziness
    and irresponsibility.

None that are not a motivating and expressive center. However ‘new’ to extant life.

To idolize any prior experiencer or doer is merely a kind of suicide
