APN Interviews, Apr. 23, 2014: WHAT IS YOUR POSITION ON NUCLEAR POWER? — State Senator Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta): I do not think that taking America down the nuclear power road is in any way a wise move.  Nuclear power is described by proponents as clean and in fact it produces radioactive waste and poses real hazards to us right here in Georgia.  The notion that dealing with all that waste is not supposed to be considered as part of the cost of that kind of energy is preposterous.  I have grave concerns about it. I think the Fukushima reactor collapse, the enormous crisis that is not going to be resolved in the foreseeable future and that is damaging the oceans and devastating the environment is an example of exactly why we should not take America down that road.

File Under ‘Government Health Care’: Over 100 Sick After Food Safety Summit

Thursday Humor: Over 100 Sick After Food Safety Summit (ZeroHedge, May 1, 2014):

File under “Government Health Care”…

Health officials are investigating what may have sickened over 100 people who attended a conference where more than 1,300 food safety experts had gathered.

No one at the Food Safety Summit held April 8-10 in Baltimore was hospitalized, according to health officials, and most people reported cases of diarrhea.

Alvina K. Chu, who is leading the Maryland Department of Health’s investigation, said Tuesday that officials haven’t yet determined what caused people to get sick. It’s not yet clear if the illness was transmitted by food or from person to person, she said.

Germany Blocks Edward Snowden From Testifying In Person In NSA Inquiry

Germany blocks Edward Snowden from testifying in person in NSA inquiry (Guardian, May 1, 2014):

The German government has blocked Edward Snowden from giving personal evidence in front of a parliamentary inquiry into NSA surveillance, it has emerged hours before Angela Merkel travels to Washington for a meeting with Barack Obama.

In a letter to members of a parliamentary committee obtained by Süddeutsche Zeitung, government officials say a personal invitation for the US whistleblower would “run counter to the political interests of the Federal Republic”, and “put a grave and permanent strain” on US-German relations.

‘US In Panic Because Of Its Waning Power’

‘US in panic because of its waning power’ (RT, May 2, 2014):

Political and economic power is draining away from the US, while other states make bilateral agreements like the investment deal between Bahrain and Russia, which makes the US extremely worried, Professor of Binary Economics Rodney Shakespeare told RT.

The US has sent a message of discontent to its ally Bahrain, which signed an investment deal with Russia. Washington has said that it is concerned with the Gulf state cozying up to Russia, which is currently under sanctions due to the Ukrainian crisis.

RT: Washington and Bahrain have long been close on political and economic terms. Why would the Gulf state cross its Western ally in the first place?

Marc Faber Warns “Social Media Stocks Are Just The Start, Market Crash Coming In 2nd Half” (ZeroHedge, May 2, 2014):

Having called for the demise of the hype/hope growth stocks, biotech, and social media schemes at the end of 2013, Marc Faber believes the weakness in those sectors is a signal of things to come (and that the so-called “rotation” to quality stocks is fallacious in the medium-term). Faber carefully notes that the size of markets allows some stocks to move up as others move down and so the overall market “looks” ok, but warns “we have already had a big break in parts of the market… but we haven’t had the big break in the overall market,” adding that “it’s too late to buy the US stock market,” confirming what we noted about Jeremy Grantham’s dismal outlook for US equities in the medium-term (and how and when the bubble bursts). Simply out, given yields around the world and the fundamentals, “individual investors have excessively optimistic expectations about their future returns,” which is terrible news for the record amounts of Greater Fools piling in as professionals pile out.

DARPA Working On Brain Implants To Help ‘Restore’ Memory

DARPA working on brain implants to help restore memory (RT, May 2, 2014):

Memory loss could soon be a thing of the past. US military researchers say they’re developing a new brain implant that could restore mental faculties. This could bring a new lease of life to millions around the world, but raises ethical concerns.

The project is being developed by the Defense Advanced Research Agency (DARPA), and could help soldiers who have suffered brain injuries during service, or millions of sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease. The program is expected to take around four years to complete and is part of a $100 million program by US President Barak Obama to gain a better understanding of the human brain, according to AFP.

“If you have been injured in the line of duty and you can’t remember your family, we want to be able to restore those kinds of functions,” DARPA program manager Justin Sanchez said this week at a conference in Washington DC, convened by the Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas.

Another Million People Drop Out Of Labor Force – Now An All Time High 92 Million People Are Out Of The Labor Force

One Million People Dropped Out Of Labor Force In April: Participation Rate Plummets To Lowest Since 1978 (RT, May 2, 2014):

And so the BLS is back to its old data fudging, because while the Establishment Survey job number was a whopper, and the biggest monthly addition since January 2012, the Household Survey showed an actual decline of 73K jobs. What is much worse, is that the reason the unemployment rate tumbled is well-known: it was entirely due to the number of Americans dropping out of the labor force. To wit, the labor force participation rate crashed from 63.2% to 62.8%, trying for lowest since January 1978! And why did it crash so much – because the number of people not in the labor force soared to 92 million, the second highest monthly increase ever, or 988K, only ‘better’ than January 2012 which curiously was the one month when the establishment survey reported a 360K “increase” in jobs.

End result: the number out of the labor force is now an all time high 92 million, and the labor force tumbled by 800K to 155.4 million from 156.2 million as the delayed effect of the extended jobless benefits ending finally hits. What is most amusing is that the “persons who currently want a job” was unchanged at 6,146K – even the BLS said it was “puzzled why so many unemployed people are not looking for jobs.” We have some ideas, and no, they don’t include the addition of 234K “birth/death adjustment” jobs.

Participation Rate:

A group of NATO ships has arrived in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda to “ensure regional security,” the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense has said. Russia has already voiced its concern over the “unprecedented” buildup of NATO forces in the region.

The ships will take part in intensive military drills, stopping off at various ports in the region. They will also participate in operation “Open Sprit” deactivating underwater explosives.

Nigel Farage’s UKIP Takes Clear Lead In EU Election Polls

Nigel Farage’s UKIP Takes Clear Lead In EU Election Polls (ZeroHedge, May 2, 2014):

Nigel Farage’s UKIP has opened up a clear lead in the run up to next month’s elections for the European Parliament. According to ComRes, 38% of Britons certain to vote say that they would cast their ballot for the party, compared to 27% who would vote for Labour, 18% who would vote for the Conservatives and 8% who would vote Lib Dem. UKIP is damaging Conservative hopes as 67% of 2010 Tory voters are now saying they would vote for UKIP. However, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns for the euro-skeptic party, as – somewhat expectedly – almost one third of Britons think that UKIP is a racist party; even as 48% believe UKIP has sensible policies.

Dutch MP Geert Wilders: EU Cares About Expansion, Not Ukraine

Dutch MP Geert Wilders: EU cares about expansion, not Ukraine (RT, May 2, 2014):

The EU is responsible for “the mess” in Ukraine, Geert Wilders, Holland’s Party for Freedom leader, told RT. Wilders wonders why the bloc has got involved in a country where half the population is against joining Europe.

Watch the full interview here

Wilders, who was speaking exclusively on RT’s SophieCo, believes the EU should have kept out of the conflict and only made things worse by giving the country hopes of a pre-accession treaty to the union, when the people of Ukraine were not in unison about joining the organization.

“It was a very delicate balance in Ukraine with 50 percent looking eastwards, towards Russia, and 50 percent of the population looking westwards, towards the European Union. So I think it was very irresponsible what the EU did; they should have kept out of it,” Wilders said.

EU Commissioner Warns “Any ‘Sensible’ Person Should Oppose Further Russia Sanctions”

EU Commissioner Warns “Any ‘Sensible’ Person Should Oppose Further Russia Sanctions” (ZeroHedge, May 2, 2014):

Obama won’t be happy! “It would harm everybody, the Europeans and the Russians,” warned Olli Rehn, the European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, adding that “any ‘sensible’ European Union citizen should oppose further sanctions on Russia because of the economic cost for Europe.” As Merkel and Obama cozy’d up for discussions this morning, we can only imagine the promises being made if only she will support his crusade (which she clearly was unwilling to judging from the press conference). Perhaps she should check in with her nation’s CEOs (who have vociferously demanded no more sanctions) and, as Rehn acknowledges, the slowing Russian economy is already having a “negative impact” on Finland and Austria, and “that economic fallout probably will spread to Germany, Poland and the Baltic countries.”

As Bloomberg reports, Europe should shun Russia sanctions on economic cost, according to Olli Rehn:

Bill Moyers: What Happened To Obama’s Promised Net Neutrality? (Video)

Bill Moyers Essay: What Happened to Obama’s Promised Net Neutrality? (Bill Moyers, April 2, 2014):

Running for president in 2007, Barack Obama pledged to keep the Internet open to all, upholding the principle of Net neutrality. Now his FCC chairman, Tom Wheeler, has introduced new rules that have caused an uproar among public interest groups and media reform advocates. They believe Wheeler’s proposed changes break Obama’s campaign promise and will allow providers like Verizon and Comcast to sell faster access to the Web to the highest bidder.

The problem, Bill Moyers says, is that “business and government are now so intertwined that public officials and corporate retainers are interchangeable parts of what Chief Justice John Roberts might call ‘the gratitude machine.’” FCC officials, including Wheeler, transit back and forth through the revolving door between public service and lucrative private commerce, losing sight of the greater good. But there’s still time to speak up and make your voices heard.

Full Show: Is Net Neutrality Dead? (Bill Moyers, April 2, 2014):

For years, the government has upheld the principle of “Net neutrality,” the belief that everyone should have equal access to the web without preferential treatment.

But now, Tom Wheeler, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission and a former cable and telecommunications top gun, is circulating potential new rules that reportedly would put a price tag on climbing aboard the Internet. The largest and richest providers, giant corporations such as Verizon and Comcast – in mid-takeover of Time Warner Cable — like the idea. They could afford to buy their way to the front of the line. Everyone else — nonprofit groups, startups and everyday users – would have to move to the rear, and the Net would be neutral no more.

San Francisco Chronicle, Apr. 26, 2014: In the past year, Monterey Bay has become the richest marine region on the Pacific Coast. In the past three weeks, it has reached a new peak with unbelievable hordes of anchovies, along with other baitfish, and with it, the highest numbers of salmon, marine birds, sea lions, gray whales, humpback whales and orcas anywhere. The bay ignited with life […] upwelling in the underwater canyon and jump-started the marine food chain. […] A week ago Monday, the humpbacks and killer whales arrived. Tony Lorenz on the Sea Wolf sent me an alert, that he saw 50 humpback whales […] A school of Pacific white-sided dolphin, numbering over a thousand, has also been sighted […] the orcas found a mother gray whale with a calf […] dragged the baby whale below the surface and drowned it […] In the past few days, Lorenz reported another attack, where the orcas dragged a carcass of a baby whale around for hours, and then when a sea lion showed up to see what was going on, it got nailed, too.

Stolen Nuclear Material Heading into US

Breaking: Nuclear Alert (Veterans Today, May 2, 2014):

By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor

This is another story I don’t want to write or be interviewed about.  I only post these things because the sources are NOT internet gossip but are too credible to ignore.  I get no joy out of this.  The obvious reason to write this is to stop another 9/11.

This is what I have:

Nuclear material, I am assuming highly enriched uranium, 1.05 tons, was stolen from Pakistan on April 18, 2014.  It was transported by air to the UK where it was stored in a moving warehouse in Teignmouth, Devon.  The facility involved has been used previously to store illegal weapons by security agencies of the US and UK including South African WMD’s.

From there, the shipment was, we are informed, broken into three parcels and is being transported as of this writing, 11:07 EST, May 2, 2014, to the US.  Shipments are to have left from both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

We are also told that computer viruses are taking down US capability of disseminating sensor information

The first U.S. case of Middle East Respiratory Virus (MERS), a viral respiratory illness, has been confirmed within U.S. borders, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday

A SARS-like virus, MERS was first detected in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Dr Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said on a conference call the first U.S. case of the virus was “of great concern because of its virulence,” noting that it has proven fatal in about a third of the cases of infection.
