The GMO Orange Scandal

And Now: GMO Oranges As Solution To Insect-Borne Bacterial Disease

GMO oranges, China, and the loss of another piece of America’s agricultural base

America’s oranges are now in the crosshairs of a genetic modification juggernaut that is sweeping this country and leaving in its wake a swath of destruction so wide and so utterly decimating that recovery seems a distant dream.

The genetic modification of corn and soy has succeeded in infiltrating nearly every processed food in America, with wheat and alfalfa soon to be next. Now it’s oranges. But why?

The orange is the second most profitable fruit crop in America after the grape. Valued at 1.5 billion in 2009, it accounts for 1/6 of all fruit and nut cash receipts. Because it requires a tropical or subtropical climate to flourish, commercial orange production is limited to just four states: Florida, California, Texas and Arizona.

While California does produce the majority of the fresh fruit, Florida dominates the orange juice market. And since orange juice is far more popular than fresh oranges, the Sunshine State rules the orange industry. At last count, more than seventy percent of the oranges grown in America are Florida oranges.

Florida orange juice is the single most profitable and distinctive fruit product in the state. The industry is responsible for over eighty percent of the US supply. As a result, America rarely imports orange juice. (

It only makes sense for the biotech industry to go after the largest and most profitable crops. The bigger the crop the better. Why waste time on smaller crops when the larger ones produce more income, and provide more control over production and distribution?

The excuse that is being used for this genetic takeover of the orange industry is a disease called “greening.”

Citrus greening, also known as huanglongbing (HLB) or yellow dragon disease, is one of the most serious citrus diseases in the world. It is a bacterial disease that greatly reduces production, destroys the economic value of fruit, and can kill trees. (APHIS Factsheet PDF )

An insect called a psyllid spreads the disease. This disease was detected in Florida in 2005.

The Asian citrus psyllid, which has been detected in the United States, bears the scientific name Diaphorina citri Kuwayama and is widely distributed in southern Asia and parts of Mexico and Brazil. (APHIS Factsheet)

Since there is no known cure, the best defense is to control the psyllid populations. There are several natural ways to control these pests such as:

  1. Topical applications of insecticidal soaps and neem oils
  2. Natural predators such as lady beetles, lacewings, spiders, and parasitic wasps
  3. Environmental controls such as removing infected branches or trees, creating new hybrids, and planting guava trees among the citrus trees. Infestations seem to be eliminated when the guava trees are used. (Insect Library)

But the USDA is not interested in these natural alternatives.

Russia will not renew Kyoto protocol (Cancún climate change conference)

Summit cast into doubt as Russia says it will not sign extension to treaty that has governed climate negotiations for more than a decade

The UN climate change conference in Cancún – and the future of the Kyoto protocol – was cast into doubt today after Russia said it would not renew its commitment to the treaty that has governed climate negotiations for more than a decade.

In a late-night plenary session, Russia’s climate change envoy, Alexander Berditsky, said his country opposed a renewal of Kyoto beyond its 2012 end date.

“Russia will not participate in the second commitment period of the Kyoto protocol,” he said in a prepared statement.

The announcement, delivered in what were supposed to be the final 24 hours of the summit, makes it even more unlikely negotiators will be able to produce a strong outcome at Cancún, environmental groups said.

After last year’s failure at Copenhagen, a weak result – or outright collapse – of talks at Cancún would damage the credibility of the entire UN negotiating process, the energy secretary Chris Huhne warned.

Norovirus Outbreaks in Hospitals Shoot Up By 50 Percent in a Month

Officials have issued a health warning as norovirus outbreaks in hospitals have shot up by 50 per cent in a month.

The winter vomiting bug called norovirus is spreading rapidly doctors have warned as outbreaks rise by half in a month.

The winter vomiting bug, which causes violent sickness and diahorrea, strikes around two million people in Britain each year.

In the last month the disease has spread rapidly and health officials have received twice as many positive samples in laboratories while hospitals have experienced more outbreaks.

Since the beginning of November the Health Protection Agency has recorded 43 outbreaks of norovirus in hospitals of which 39 have led to ward closures. This is almost 50 per cent more than the number recorded in October.

Norovirus is highly contagious but is not normally dangerous to otherwise healthy people. The very young, old and pregnant women are more vulnerable.

John Harris, a HPA epidemiologist specialising in norovirus said: “Data from the HPA hospital norovirus reporting system shows the number of outbreaks reported in hospitals over the past month have increased by 50 per cent over the previous month.

“Laboratory reports of norovirus have doubled in November compared to October which means that the norovirus season is now well under way. Hospital outbreak reporting is a voluntary system and aims to provide a snap shot of activity within the NHS. This is a useful tool for health care professionals to understand what is happening both nationally and within their region.

“Norovirus comes on fairly suddenly, with little warning and is highly contagious. Anyone who thinks they may have it should not to go to their doctor’s surgery or A&E as this could spread the illness to vulnerable people and healthcare workers. This is particularly important in hospitals as norovirus outbreaks can lead to the ward closures and severe disruption to hospital services.”

The disease can be transmitted by eating contaminated food, or by touching surfaces where ill people have left the virus.

UK Big Freeze to Last at Least Another Month

Shivering Britain can expect at least another month of bitterly cold temperatures with many parts failing to get much above zero until the middle of January, forecasters have warned.

Heavy snow fell on Scotland and northern England last week Photo: PA By Martin Evans 6:39PM GMT 09 Dec 2010

So far December has seen some of the coldest temperatures and heaviest snowfalls since 1981, but with no let up on the horizon, it could end up being the worst winter since 1910.

Parts of northern England and central Scotland have seen lows of (0F) -18C while the mercury has continued to drop in the south.

But apart from a brief respite over the coming weekend, when temperatures are expected to climb slightly, the cold snap is likely to continue throughout Christmas and well into January.

Drivers are being warned to remain vigilant and cautious as many road surfaces will be icy and treacherous for many weeks to come.

… either that or experience hyperinflation. There is simply no other option. We can NEVER pay off our debts. To do so would require every US family to pay $31,000 a year for 75 years.

Bear in mind, I’m completely ignoring the debt we took on with the nationalization of Fannie and Freddie, AIG, and the slew of other garbage we nationalized or shifted onto the Fed’s balance sheet. And yet we’re STILL talking about every US family making $31,000 in debt payments per year for 75 years to pay off our national debt.

Obviously that ain’t going to happen.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal budget deficit rose to $150.4 billion last month, the largest November gap on record. And the government’s deficits are set to climb if Congress passes a tax-cut plan that’s estimated to cost $855 billion over two years.

The Treasury Department says November’s budget gap was 25 percent more than the deficit in November 2009.

For the first two months of the current budget year, which began Oct. 1, the deficit totals $290.8 billion. That’s 2 percent less than for the same period a year ago. And economists had been estimating that the full-year deficit would decline after two years of record highs.

But analysts say the tax deal President Barack Obama reached with Republicans this week will give the 2011 budget year the largest deficit in history — $1.5 trillion, according to economists at JPMorgan Chase. It would mark the third straight year of trillion-dollar-plus deficits.

Under the tax-cut plan, JPMorgan economist Michael Feroli said he expects a $1.5 trillion deficit this year to be followed by a $1.2 trillion gap in 2012.

While many economists expected the Bush-era tax cuts would be extended and reflected that in their deficit forecasts for coming years, they had not factored in other parts of the tax-cut package including a 2 percentage-point reduction in the Social Security payroll tax for next year, taking the tax for individuals from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent, at a cost to the government of $112 billion over the next year.

Before the tax cut agreement, many private economists were forecasting that the deficits would start to slowing fall in coming years. The major Wall Street firms who serve as primary dealers for the government’s debt auctions projected last month that the 2011 deficit will dip to $1.21 trillion and decline further to $1.02 trillion in 2012.

The 2009 deficit is the current all-time high, at $1.42 trillion. The second-highest deficit ever is the $1.29 trillion deficit for the 2010 budget year, which ended Sept. 30.

Economists do expect the tax cut package, which the Senate is expected to begin voting on Monday, to boost economic growth.

Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, said Friday, he believed the tax cut package would boost overall economic growth, as measured by the gross domestic product, to 3 percent in 2011, up from the firm’s forecast before the tax deal of 2.4 percent GDP growth in 2011.

Czech Republic Criticised For Homosexual ‘Sexual Arousal’ Tests

The Czech Republic is using controversial “sexual arousal” tests where men are shown pornography to check if asylum seekers are homosexual, according to EU’s leading human rights agency.

The EU said that the phallometric testing by the Czech Republic could fall foul of the European Charter of Human Rights Photo: ALAMY

In a report on homosexual equality, the Agency for Fundamental Rights said that phallometric testing, when men are shown both homosexual and heterosexual pornography while censors monitor the blood flow to the penis, “was questionable, since it is dubious whether it reaches sufficiently clear conclusions”.

The Czech Republic is the only country in the EU that uses phallometric testing in order to distinguish true asylum seekers from those that might use claims of homosexuality and subsequent persecution back home as ruse to get into the country.

The EU agency also said that the test could fall foul of the European Charter of Human Rights, which prohibits degrading and humiliating treatment, adding that “this exam is particularly inappropriate for asylum seekers, given the fact that many of them might have suffered abuse due to their sexual orientation”.

The Czech Republic’s human rights commission described the test as “undignified”.

But the Czech interior ministry defended the method, saying that it was part of a “comprehensive” system to check the veracity of claims, that it was voluntary and had only been used in about ten cases.

Vladimir Repka, a ministry spokesman, explained that the test was applied mainly to asylum seekers from countries “that severely punish homosexuality”.

“These are people from areas where Islamic Sharia law is applied, or from countries which have a strong Islamic influence,” he explained, citing Iran, Syria, Azerbaijan and Nigeria as examples.

Leaked cable lays bare how Irish government was forced to grant Vatican officials immunity from testifying to Murphy commission

A WikiLeaks cable details the behind-the-scenes diplomacy before Cardinal Seán Brady met Pope Benedict XVI in Rome, after which the pope said he shared the ‘outrage, betrayal and shame’ of Irish Catholics. Photograph: Tony Gentile/Reuters

The Vatican refused to allow its officials to testify before an Irish commission investigating the clerical abuse of children and was angered when they were summoned from Rome, US embassy cables released by WikiLeaks reveal.

Requests for information from the 2009 Murphy commission into sexual and physical abuse by clergy “offended many in the Vatican” who felt that the Irish government had “failed to respect and protect Vatican sovereignty during the investigations“, a cable says.

Despite the lack of co-operation from the Vatican, the commission was able to substantiate many of the claims and concluded that some bishops had tried to cover up abuse, putting the interests of the Catholic church ahead of those of the victims. Its report identified 320 people who complained of child sexual abuse between 1975 and 2004 in the Dublin archdiocese.

A cable entitled “Sex abuse scandal strains Irish-Vatican relations, shakes up Irish church, and poses challenges for the Holy See” claimed that Vatican officials also believed Irish opposition politicians were “making political hay” from the situation by publicly urging the government to demand a reply from the Vatican.

Ultimately, the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone (equivalent to a prime minister), wrote to the Irish embassy, ordering that any requests related to the investigation must come through diplomatic channels.

Vatican diplomats also lobbied against Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez and wanted ‘Christian roots’ enshrined in EU constitution

A WikiLeaks cable reports that Pope Benedict XVI, seen here being received by Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara in 2006, ‘might prefer to see Turkey develop a special relationship short of EU membership’. Photograph: Dylan Martinez/AFP/Getty Images

The pope is responsible for the Vatican’s growing hostility towards Turkey joining the EU, previously secret cables sent from the US embassy to the Holy See in Rome claim.

In 2004 Cardinal Ratzinger, the future pope, spoke out against letting a Muslim state join, although at the time the Vatican was formally neutral on the question.

The Vatican’s acting foreign minister, Monsignor Pietro Parolin, responded by telling US diplomats that Ratzinger’s comments were his own rather than the official Vatican position.

The cable released by WikiLeaks shows that Ratzinger was the leading voice behind the Holy See’s unsuccessful drive to secure a reference to Europe’s “Christian roots” in the EU constitution. The US diplomat noted that Ratzinger “clearly understands that allowing a Muslim country into the EU would further weaken his case for Europe’s Christian foundations”.

But by 2006 Parolin was working for Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, and his tone had distinctly chilled. “Neither the pope nor the Vatican have endorsed Turkey’s EU membership per se,” he told the American charge d’affaires, “rather, the Holy See has been consistently open to accession, emphasising only that Turkey needs to fulfil the EU’s Copenhagen criteria to take its place in Europe.”

US Home Values: $1.7 Trillion Drop in 2010 – $9 Trillion Drop Since June 2006!!!

Peace is war and recovery is the Greatest Depression.

(Bloomberg) — U.S. home values are poised to drop by more than $1.7 trillion this year amid rising foreclosures and the expiration of homebuyer tax credits, said Zillow Inc., a closely held provider of home price data.

This year’s estimated decline, more than the $1.05 trillion drop in 2009, brings the loss since the June 2006 home-price peak to $9 trillion, the Seattle-based company said today in a statement.

“It’s definitely going to continue into 2011,” Stan Humphries, Zillow’s chief economist, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television today. “The back half of 2010 looked horrible and 2011 should look like the mirror image of that.”

The drop in home values pushed more buyers underwater, meaning they owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth, Zillow said. The percentage of homeowners with mortgages with so-called negative equity reached 23.2 percent in the third quarter, up from 21.8 percent at the end of 2009.

Housing demand has slumped since the start of the year as the government tax credit expired and unemployment hovers near 10 percent. Sales of existing homes in October fell to an annual pace of 4.43 million, compared with 5.98 million a year earlier and an annual average of 5.81 million over the past decade, the National Association of Realtors said Nov. 23. The median price was $170,500, down from $172,000 a year earlier.

Revealed: Julian Assange ‘Rape’ Accuser Linked to Notorious CIA Operative

All those ‘leaks’ benefit only the elitists and their agenda.

The story on the surface makes for a script for a new Oliver Stone Hollywood thriller. A 39-year old Australian hacker holds the President of the United States and his State Department hostage to a gigantic cyber “leak,” unless the President leaves Julian Assange and his Wikileaks free to release hundreds of thousands of pages of sensitive US Government memos. A closer look at the details, so far carefully leaked by the most ultra-establishment of international media such as the New York Times, reveals a clear agenda. That agenda coincidentally serves to buttress the agenda of US geopolitics around the world from Iran to Russia to North Korea. The Wikileaks is a big and dangerous US intelligence Con Job which will likely be used to police the Internet.

It is almost too perfectly-scripted to be true. A discontented 22-year old US Army soldier on duty in Baghdad, Bradley Manning, a low-grade US Army intelligence analyst, described as a loner, a gay in the military, a disgruntled “computer geek,” sifts through classified information at Forward Operating Base Hammer. He decides to secretly download US State Department email communications from the entire world over a period of eight months for hours a day, onto his blank CDs while pretending to be listening to Lady Gaga. In addition to diplomatic cables, Manning is believed to have provided WikiLeaks with helicopter gun camera video of an errant US attack in Baghdad on unarmed journalists, and with war logs from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Manning then is supposed to have tracked down a notorious former US computer hacker to get his 250,000 pages of classified US State Department cables out in the Internet for the whole world to see. He allegedly told the US hacker that the documents he had contained “incredible, awful things that belonged in the public domain and not on some server stored in a dark room in Washington, DC.” The hacker turned him in to US authorities so the story goes. Manning is now incommunicado since months in US military confinement so we cannot ask him, conveniently. The Pentagon routinely hires the best hackers to design their security systems.

Then the plot thickens. The 250,000 pages end up at the desk of Julian Assange, the 39-year-old Australian founder of a supposedly anti-establishment website with the cute name Wikileaks. Assange decides to selectively choose several of the world’s most ultra-establishment news media to exclusively handle the leaking job for him as he seems to be on the run from Interpol, not for leaking classified information, but for allegedly having consensual sex with two Swedish women who later decided it was rape.

He selects as exclusive newspapers to decide what is to be leaked the New York Times which did such service in promoting faked propaganda against Saddam that led to the Iraqi war, the London Guardian and Der Spiegel. Assange claims he had no time to sift through so many pages so handed them to the trusted editors of the establishment media for them to decide what should be released. Very “anti-establishment” that. The New York Times even assigned one of its top people, David E. Sanger, to control the release of the Wikileaks material. Sanger is no establishment outsider. He sits as a member of the elite Council on Foreign Relations as well as the Aspen Institute Strategy Group together with the likes of Condi Rice, former Defense Secretary William Perry, former CIA head John Deutch, former State Department Deputy Secretary and now World Bank head Robert Zoellick among others.

Indeed a strange choice of media for a person who claims to be anti-establishment. But then Assange also says he believes the US Government version of 9/11 and calls the Bilderberg Group a normal meeting of people, a very establishment view.

Not so secret cables…

The latest sensational Wikileaks documents allegedly from the US State Department embassies around the world to Washington are definitely not as Hillary Clinton claimed “an attack on America’s foreign policy interests that have endangered innocent people.” And they do not amount to what the Italian foreign minister, called the “September 11 of world diplomacy.” The British government calls them a threat to national security and an aide to Canada’s Prime Minister calls on the CIA to assassinate Assange, as does kooky would-be US Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin.

Most important, the 250,000 cables are not “top secret” as we might have thought. Between two and three million US Government employees are cleared to see this level of “secret” document,[1] and some 500,000 people around the world have access to the Secret Internet Protocol Network (SIPRnet) where the cables were stored. Siprnet is not recommended for distribution of top-secret information. Only 6% or 15,000 pages of the documents have been classified as even secret, a level below top-secret. Another 40% were the lowest level, “confidential”, while the rest were unclassified. In brief, it was not all that secret.[2]

Most of the revelations so far have been unspectacular. In Germany the revelations led to the removal of a prominent young FDP politician close to Guido Westerwelle who apparently liked to talk too much to his counterpart at the US Embassy. The revelations about Russian politics, that a US Embassy official refers to Putin and Medvedev as “Batman and Robin,” tells more about the cultural level of current US State Department personnel than it does about internal Russian politics.

FAA Admits Losing Key Information Necessary To Identify 100,000 Private Planes in the US

Agency fears ‘questionable registration’ could be exploited by terrorists, drug traffickers

Visit for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

The FAA admitted that it has lost key information necessary to identify 100,000 private planes in the United States, creating a possible risk to national security. NBC’s Brian Williams reports.

NEW YORK — The Federal Aviation Administration’s aircraft registry is missing key information on who owns one-third of the 357,000 private and commercial planes in the U.S. — a gap the agency fears could be exploited by terrorists and drug traffickers.

The records are in such disarray that the FAA says it is worried that criminals could buy planes without the government’s knowledge, or use the registration numbers of other aircraft to evade new computer systems designed to track suspicious flights. It has ordered all aircraft owners to re-register their planes in an effort to clean up its files.

About 119,000 of the planes on the U.S. registry have “questionable registration” because of missing forms, invalid addresses, unreported sales or other paperwork problems, according to the FAA. In many cases, the FAA cannot say who owns a plane or even whether it is still flying or has been junked.

Already there have been cases of drug traffickers using phony U.S. registration numbers, as well as instances of mistaken identity in which police raided the wrong plane because of faulty record-keeping.

Next year, the FAA will begin canceling the registration certificates of all 357,000 aircraft and require owners to register anew, a move that is causing grumbling among airlines, banks and leasing companies. Notices went out to the first batch of aircraft owners last month.

The oil giant Shell claimed it had inserted staff into all the main ministries of the Nigerian government, giving it access to politicians’ every move in the oil-rich Niger Delta, according to a leaked US diplomatic cable.

The company’s top executive in Nigeria told US diplomats that Shell had seconded employees to every relevant department and so knew “everything that was being done in those ministries”. She boasted that the Nigerian government had “forgotten” about the extent of Shell’s infiltration and was unaware of how much the company knew about its deliberations.

The cache of secret dispatches from Washington’s embassies in Africa also revealed that the Anglo-Dutch oil firm swapped intelligence with the US, in one case providing US diplomats with the names of Nigerian politicians it suspected of supporting militant activity, and requesting information from the US on whether the militants had acquired anti-aircraft missiles.

LAGOS, Nigeria — Halliburton is planning to make a plea bargain in former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney’s corruption case, Nigerian officials told GlobalPost.

Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency charged Cheney as the head of Halliburton when its engineering subsidiary, KBR, allegedly paid bribes totaling $180 million to secure contracts worth $6 billion.

KBR has admitted to bribing officials. Last year the company pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to paying the bribes to Nigerian officials prior to 2007, when it was a subsidiary of Halliburton. KBR, which is now independent from Halliburton, agreed to pay $597 million in fines, according to the Associated Press.

Cheney’s lawyer dismissed the new Nigerian charges as “entirely baseless.”

However, Halliburton is in talks with Nigerian officials to make a plea bargain in the case, said Femi Babafemi, spokesman for Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the agency which has pressed the charges against Cheney.

“The companies are asking for a plea bargain, we are reviewing their request, we are talking with them, but we have not gone far with the talks yet,” Babafemi told GlobalPost.

Although Babafemi did not give further details, other sources within the agency said the plea bargain might involve a $500 million settlement.

Former prime minister recalled to face Chilcot panel over revelations of warnings he was given before Iraq invasion

Tony Blair is to be summoned back to the official inquiry into the Iraq invasion in light of damaging and conflicting evidence revealed since he appeared as a witness earlier this year.

Blair will give evidence between 18 January and 4 February next year along with Admiral Lord Boyce, the former chief of the defence staff, and Jack Straw, the former foreign secretary. Three successive cabinet secretaries who operated at the heart of Whitehall will also be called.

Members of the Chilcot panel are believed to be concerned about the revelation in documents released in June that the former prime minister was warned by his government’s chief law officer that an invasion of Iraq would be illegal the day before he privately assured George Bush he would support US-led military action.

The documents gave an unprecedented insight into how the then attorney general, Lord Goldsmith, repeatedly warned Blair of the consequences of invading Iraq without fresh UN authority, much to the prime minister’s irritation.

China #1, United States #2? 25 Facts That Prove The Transition Is Really Happening

Add this to the list (MUST-SEE!):

Jesse Ventura Conspiracy Theory: Worldwide Water Conspiracy

On a recent episode of The Office, Michael Scott spent much of the show bemoaning the fact that China could soon become the number one economic superpower.  Of course by the end of the episode everyone had concluded that the United States would continue to be number one indefinitely, but in the real world things are not so simple.  Sadly, the cold, hard facts reveal that China is on the rise and the United States is experiencing a dramatic economic decline.  The world is changing and China is projected to become the largest economy in the world at some point during the next decade.  Americans have been taught from birth that “the U.S. is number one”, but the transition is really happening.  China is passing the United States even in quite a few high tech industries and in many areas of scientific research.  The numbers that you are going to read below are absolutely staggering.  It is getting really hard to deny that the Chinese are wiping the floor with us economically.  In fact, they are beating us so badly that it is hard to put into words.

Of course our leaders are saying all the right things.  During the State of the Union address last January, Barack Obama defiantly declared the following to the rest of the world….

“I do not accept second place for the United States of America.”

Well, Barack Obama may not be willing to “accept” it, but that doesn’t mean that it is not happening.  China is becoming an absolute powerhouse.  Of course that would never have happened if we had not opened up trade with them.

The Face Mask That Is So Good Every Crook Wants One

US manufacturer in the dock after disguise is linked to robberies.

Conrad Zdzierak, right, used a black SPFX mask, left, in one of a string of robberies. The mask was so lifelike that police initially arrested a black man. Zdzierak called his character ‘The Player’ and police also found a mask of an elderly man in his apartment

A company that sells “movie quality” silicone masks that incorporate human hair to achieve what its adverts call “ultra high realism” is at the centre of a snowballing police investigation after detectives discovered that it had become the favoured supplier of disguises to America’s most wanted bank robbers.

The Los Angeles company SPFX Masks, set up to cater to the film industry, said yesterday that it is “proud” of the fact that its range of hand-painted products look realistic, “but not proud of the way they are being used” after learning that they had been linked to a string of unsolved crimes.

In Ohio, a Polish immigrant called Conrad Zdzierak last week pleaded guilty to using one of the masks to transform himself from a 30-year-old white man into a black character he called “The Player,” who carried out a string of robberies in the state.

The disguise was so effective that local police mistakenly arrested a young African American for the crimes, holding him in custody for several months. Witnesses, including six out of the seven bank employees who took part in a photo line-up, went so far as to wrongly identify the innocent black man as the culprit.

“We showed the picture [of the masked perpetrator] to his mother, and even she thought it was him,” the detective in charge of the case, Keenan Riordan, told reporters. After that little misunderstanding had been ironed out, Zdzierak was convicted on six counts of robbery.

US: Major Snowstorm This Weekend; Life-Threatening Cold to Grip Dakotas to New York

Life-Threatening Cold to Grip Dakotas to New York (AccuWeather)

Dangerously cold air, perhaps the coldest of this entire winter season, is poised to invade the eastern half of the country over the next few days. In many places, if actual temperatures don’t fall below zero, brutal winds will make it feel that way with life-threatening conditions resulting.

A major storm will bring heavy snow and strong winds to the Great Lakes and parts of the Midwest northeastward into portions of neighboring Canada this weekend.

Enough snow to shovel and plow will fall over this region, but the primary form of precipitation along the I-95 corridor will be drenching rain.

Travel in much of the region will be extremely dangerous especially as strong winds develop on the backside of the storm producing widespread blowing and drifting snow.

However, there are some forecast problems that remain with the storm, due to its complexity, track, dry air pockets, and changeover times in some locations from not only snow and ice to rain, but also back to snow and a freeze-up at the end.

Jim Rogers: ‘US Government’s Inflation Data Is A Sham’

The US government excludes food and energy from its worthless inflation data.

The US government’s inflation data is therefor pure deception and fraud.

Leading investor Jim Rogers has attacked the US government’s inflation data as a “sham” that is causing the central bank to massively understate price pressures.

Mr Rogers, who shot to fame after co-founding Quantum Fund with George Soros, argued the Federal Reserve uses information that relies too heavily on housing prices.

“I expect interest rates in the US to go much, much, much higher over the next few years,” he said, adding that he is betting against US Treasuries.

The core personal consumption expenditure index, which strips out food and energy costs, is the Fed’s preferred measure of inflation. This was flat in October for the second straight month.

“Everybody in this room knows prices are going up for everything,” Mr Rogers told the Reuters Summit.

The investor remains bullish on commodities given the debt crises facing many country across the world.

“If the world economy gets better, commodities are going to go up in price because there are shortages. If the world economy does not get better, you should own commodities, because [central banks] are going to print more money,” he said. “Real assets are the way to protect yourself.

Mr Rogers also predicted that the price of gold will rise eventually above $2,000 an ounce. The price of spot gold hit a record high of $1,430.95 an ounce before falling back to close on Tuesday at $1,409.35.

Police State North Carolina: Fingerprint Scanner Use Raises Privacy Concerns

Jesse Ventura Conspiracy Theory: Police State (And FEMA Concentration Camps)

RALEIGH — Next month, 13 law enforcement agencies in the region will begin using a new handheld device that lets an officer scan a person’s fingerprints and seek a match in an electronic database – all without going anywhere.

Police say taking fingerprints in the field will allow them to work more efficiently and safely. But the ACLU North Carolina in Raleigh worries that the device may allow officers to violate privacy rights.

The ACLU is concerned about what will become of fingerprint scans that are sent to other databases, such as the National Crime Information Center.

“Part of the danger is the idea of the government creating a database on its citizens,” said Sarah Preston, policy director for ACLU North Carolina. “Citizens should be allowed some degree of privacy.”

But those concerns are unwarranted, said Sam Pennica, director of the City-County Bureau of Identification, the agency that processes fingerprints in Wake County and is providing the devices to local agencies. The software for the device, known as Rapid Identification COPS Technology, would not store fingerprints of any individuals, even those charged with a crime, Pennica said.

“It will not retain the fingerprints of any individuals under any circumstances,” he said, adding that fingerprints would only be compared to those in the Wake County database. “They will not be submitted to any state or federal agency.” (Sure! Watch former Governor Jesse Ventura and let’s see if you still believe this.)

Floods And Mudslides Ravage Colombia And Venezuela

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Dozens of people have been killed and thousands have abandoned their homes as floods and mudslides ravage Colombia and Venezuela.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Tuesday urged nearly 500 people to evacuate from the vulnerable hillside of a poor Medellin suburb where a landslide killed dozens as it buried about 30 homes.

The bodies of 36 victims — at least a third of them children — have been recovered from Sunday’s disaster. Authorities say about 90 people remain missing.

Santos on Tuesday visited the stricken suburb of Bello, about 155 miles (250 kilometers) northeast of Bogota, and told reporters the landslide was a tragedy waiting to happen. He promised to build 1,000 homes for at-risk families in the town, where officials say between 80 and 100 homes are in danger.

Meanwhile, authorities in Venezuela evacuated 5,000 more people from high-risk areas, bringing the total number of Venezuelans displaced by weeks of rain to more than 106,900, Defense Minister Carlos Mata Figueroa said Tuesday. At least 35 people have been killed by flooding and mudslides.

Poland: Radioactive Cobald-60 Stolen From Foundry

Poland’s state nuclear agency said yesterday a small amount of radioactive cobalt stolen from a foundry in the east of the country is too small to pose a risk. The theft of between five and seven containers with cobalt-60 was discovered last month during stocktaking at the bankrupt and shuttered Ursus foundry in Lublin.

Spokeswoman Monika Skotniczna said the cobalt – used in machines that made technical measurements – did not pose a threat to the public due to the quantity and its age.

“These are old sources, so they don’t have high activity,” Ms Skotniczna said. The only danger is if the cobalt-60 is taken out of its lead shields, but even then “it’s not life threatening”, she said.

Although cobalt can be used to make a “dirty bomb”, Ms Skotniczna said the quantity stolen was too small to make anything dangerous.

“The amount is too small. It is useless for terrorists,” she said. She said the containers, weighing dozens of kilograms each, were probably stolen by scrap-metal thieves.

Decision to force bondholders to pay for banking system’s collapse appears to pay off as economy grows 1.2% in third quarter

Iceland’s decision two years ago to force bondholders to pay for the banking system’s collapse appeared to pay off after official figures showed the country exited recession in the third quarter.

The Icelandic economy, which contracted for seven consecutive quarters until the summer, grew by 1.2% in the three months to the end of September.

Iceland famously agreed in a referendum to reject a scheme to repay most of its debts that were once worth 11 times its total national income.

In contrast to Ireland, Iceland’s taxpayers refused to foot the bill for the debts accumulated by the banking sector. Bondholders were told to accept dramatic reductions in the value of repayments on bank debt after the sector borrowed beyond its means to fund ambitious investments abroad.

The return to growth is likely to put pressure on Irish politicians to explain why Dublin rejected a more radical restructuring of its debts and a departure from the eurozone.

Iceland’s currency has fallen by around a quarter, helping its exports.
