– US to impose new sanctions on Russia soon:
The United States seeks to impose new sanctions on Russia “in the near future,” under a new law designed to punish Moscow for alleged meddling in the 2016 US election.
“In the near future, you’ll see additional sanctions,” Steven Mnuchin said during Senate testimony on Tuesday.
Mnuchin emphasized on his commitment to implement additional sanctions on Moscow as soon as next month
“This should in no way be interpreted as we’re not putting sanctions on any of the people in that report,” he told lawmakers.
Mnuchin noted a report identifying Russian oligarchs who are close to the Kremlin is an initial step toward fresh sanctions.
Late on Monday, the Treasury Department named major Russian businessmen, including the heads of the country’s two biggest banks, metals magnates and the boss of the state gas monopoly on a list of oligarchs close to the Kremlin.
United States also expanded its sanctions on Friday against Russia. The new sanctions added 21 people, including Russian Deputy Energy Minister Andrey Cherezov, and nine companies to the sanctions list because of what Washington called Moscow’s continued interference in Ukraine.
H/t reader squodgy:
“Following on, isn’t it strange how israel virtually controls US Foreign Policy and as soon as slimeball netanyahu has a meeting with Vlad, the US commence introduction of tighter sanctions on Russia.
Any ideas?””
