While the Dutch government cannot deport criminal North African asylum seekers, it does know how to deport native Dutch.
The 59-year-old Urho Engels, was born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. But he moved with his parents to the United States when he was two years old.
A few years ago, he divorced his wife and he wanted to live in the Netherlands again. According to Urho he had “too many memories, I didn’t want to stay in the U.S. anymore”. Because he still had many friends in the Netherlands, he decided to move to his home country.
The pensioner moved near his old home town in the Netherlands and thought he was welcome. But things changed because he didn’t get a residence permit from the Dutch immigration authorities. They say people lose their Dutch citizenship when accepting another nationality as an adult.
Urho says he doesn’t know anything about abandoning his Dutch nationality. The authorities want to deport him on 31 January. His neighbors have started a petition and say he is a “lovely neighbor”. The petition can be found here.
