Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Chicago Police Department, confirmed on Sunday morning that the Sorrells brothers were charged in Aldridge’s murder overnight. It was not immediately known what led investigators to the men.
“Derren Sorells, a 22-year-old male who is a documented member of the Gangster Disciples. Mr. Sorells is on parole,” Guglielmi said. “His brother, 26-year-old Darwin Sorells is co-conspirator and also on parole for a gun charge.”
Derren has been charged with 1st Degree Murder and 1st Degree Attempted Murder, both felonies. Darwin has been charged with one felony count of 1st Degree Murder, one felony count of 1st Degree Attempted Murder and one misdemeanor count of Criminal Trespass to Land.
Darwin Sorells had been sentenced in January 2013 to six years in prison but was released early, the spokesman added. Other details were not immediately available.
Aldridge, who was 32 years old, was pushing her baby in a stroller down a Chicago street when she was caught in the crossfire of a gunfight. Aldridge, who was returning home after registering her three oldest children for school, died of her injuries.
According to police, two men were shooting at a third man but missed, striking Aldridge instead. Her baby was not injured.
