One way to measure the earths energy balance is to use satellites to measure how much energy the earth radiates into space and compare that with how much energy the earth receives from the sun. The earth needs to radiate slightly more energy into space than it receives from the sun in order for the surface of the earth to be cooler than the center of the earth. If satalites detect a decrease in energy radiated into space from the earth then the earth will be heating up.
