Kyodo News: Fukushima raises concerns over “viability of Japan’s future” — Former Prime Minister: Reactor restarts “a criminal act toward future generations”; “Fate of country” at stake; “Myth that nuclear power clean and safe has collapsed” (ENENews, Jan 22, 2014):

Wall St. Journal, Jan. 22, 2014: “Restarting nuclear reactors while we still have no place to dispose nuclear waste is a criminal act toward future generations,” [Former Prime Minister Morihiro] Hosokawa said during a news conference where he laid out his campaign promises for the Feb. 9 election.

Bloomberg, Jan. 22, 2014: “The myth that nuclear power is clean and safe has collapsed,” Hosokawa told reporters in Tokyo today. “We don’t even have a place to store nuclear waste. Without that, restarting the plants would be a crime against future generations.”

Kyodo News, Jan. 22, 2014: “Nuclear power is out of date and the most costly source of energy,” Hosokawa said. “The severity of risks associated with nuclear power is high. We have to switch to renewable and environmentally friendly energies, and lead the world in that field.”

Reuters, Jan. 22, 2014: “I foolishly once believed the myth that nuclear energy is clean and safe,” he told a news conference. “That myth has completely broken down.”

Kyodo News, Jan. 22, 2014: “Nuclear power is out of date and the most costly source of energy,” Hosokawa said. “The severity of risks associated with nuclear power is high. We have to switch to renewable and environmentally friendly energies, and lead the world in that field.”

Kyodo News, Jan. 18, 2014: Many voters, however, may cast ballots for anti-nuclear candidates because the man-made Fukushima disaster, triggered by the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, raised questions about the viability of Japan’s future. Naoto Kan of the DPJ, also a former prime minister, is urging Tokyo residents in his blog to concentrate on backing Hosokawa if they think Japan should phase out nuclear power, calling Hosokawa’s run “a nightmare for the LDP.” “Japan has faced many problems, and the issue of nuclear power generation leads to the fate of this country,” Hosokawa said after securing Koizumi’s support.

Mainichi, Jan. 15, 2014: […] former prime minister [Hosokawa] said the issue of nuclear power will determine the fate of Japan. […] Despite the outbreak of the unprecedented disaster at the tsunami-ravaged Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant, the nuclear power policy was not sufficiently debated in the two post-disaster national elections. […]  As Koizumi points out, the outcome of the election will have a huge impact on the direction of national politics.

  1. Nuclear safe and clean? It has destroyed the food chain, and it is destroying the nation that was Japan. Problem deepened when Japan insisted on lying about it. First lies, more propaganda, more lies, and blackout……….things are really bad.
Why they won’t tell the truth is beyond me. If I were running a country, and it was in danger of extinction, I would go to Russia for help. They had the biggest disaster and were able to come out of it. Instead, they refused any help, told more lies, and won’t let Russia in.
Why? That is what I don’t understand. An entire nation of people will die thanks to their mendacity. It makes no sense.
Does it have to be irrevocably obvious before they admit the truth? This is madness.
Russia offered help, they turned them down.
Finally, they let the US is…..it is full of bigger liars than Japan. Nobody believes either one today.
Now, the food chain is destroyed. CA, OR, WA, Canada and Alaska are being poisoned daily. In a couple of years, the western part of the North American continent will be unlivable. I don’t know how long before it hits the east coast, but the jet stream moves east.
Our fish are no longer edible, neither are sea turtles. Almost two months ago, hundreds of dead sea turtles washed up on the coast of Costa Rica. Dogs that raced down to eat them, died instantly. That tells me the radiation is far more powerful and dangerous than Japan or the US admits.
Here on the west coast, plutonium was found in our milk 30 days after Fukushima. We have suffered a miserable drought that has gone on since 2011. I cannot help but think Fukushima is part of the cause.
In China, the air is so filthy, they show sunrise on a big TV screen. It has been proved that darkened skies cause rain clouds go elsewhere……
Our entire way of living is being destroyed.
Do I think this is more important that the greedy guts destroying the economy? You bet. This problem is bigger than the greedy guts, they will die, too.
We are all going to die because we have fools for leaders. Too many people slept too long.
Now, we are doomed. We are actually going to experience a demise of a civilization. I have often wondered why so many in our history disappeared overnight………I never dreamed I would see one myself.
As far as I am concerned, the greedy guts can steal all they can, but it won’t stop the fact much of the world is going to be destroyed. No matter how hard they try, they cannot live in a radioactive world, either.
    None of us can.
For those of us who love animals, wild birds, cats, dogs, foxes, ETC……..they will die, too, no matter how much denial we develop.
Japan is a perfect example as to why corporations cannot run nations. Nations serve public welfare, corporations serve greedy guts. Never the two shall meet and meld properly……..their goals are opposite.
