MEXT Showed Radioactive Contamination Levels 20% Too Low, Correct Data Published On April 16, 2012

MEXT showed the contamination level lower than actual by 20% (Fukushima Diary, April 16, 2012):

Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology admitted their monitoring data of sea water and sea ground around Fukushima plants were shown lower than actual by 20% at maximum and published the correct data on 4/16/2012.

The manipulated data was from March to August.

MEXT explains it was only cesium 134 that they miscalculated, which is because cesium 134 doesn’t produce only gamma ray, it takes time to analyze it accurately. They state, “It was an emergency, it was more important to analyze more samples than analyzing accurately. ”
